I was in a bit of shock as it was being told to me, but my recollection is that essentially the timing chain stretched and then caused damage to the inside of the engine.
 
I'm at 40k miles and got a quote from my local dealer for $5900 to extend the factory warranty from 60k to 100k miles. Sorry this is just not worth it to me. I may just sell the car at 60k and buy another. I can put the $5900 towards another car.

That's a whole lot of money for sure.

I still don't understand at all why a warranty from 60k - 100k miles costs more at 40k miles than it does at 1 mile. Can anyone explain that? It's the same coverage regardless, is it not?

Think about it for a moment. If you are a buyer, which is essentially what a warranty company is doing (buying the responsibility of keeping your car on the road), and you have a brand new vehicle on the lot vs a vehicle with 40k on it which one are you most interested in price notwithstanding? Of course the new one because it's new and has the lowest overall known risk of failure. The risk of the 40k car isn't the car itself it's the unknown. Warranty companies don't do certified used car inspections so they may be warrantying a car at 40k that has never been serviced, had the tires rotated or had anything done to it but gas refills. They may also be getting one of my vehicles which never misses an oil change, tire rotation or any kind of preventative maintenance work. It's insurance and we all as consumers end up footing the bill at higher mileages for the knuckleheads who will abuse a vehicle until it shows signs of breaking down, drop the $6500 for the warranty and get a 16k engine out of the deal.
It's how they recoup their investment. Another thing to think about also is that a fully warrantied car is most likely going to see the shop more often for minor repair work that is covered. The shop is getting paid by the warranty so they are going to bill out the max to take advantage of this opportunity.
Warranties are no different than health insurance. Your rates go up as you get older and/or you smoke, have cancer, high blood pressure, etc.

Dealer recommendations for extended warranty

I just purchased a new 2012 QX56 and would like to get an extended factory warranty. My local dealer was not doing much on the price so I want to find a better option. Any recommendations would be great - PM me with info please.

I don't consider that a valid comparison at all, but more importantly, it doesn't address the issue in my opinion. If your point were valid, I could buy myself health insurance from age 60-100 for a fourth of the cost if I pay for it when I'm 40. That isn't possible, and there is no financial incentive or logic for it to be possible.

The point here is paying vastly different amounts for the exact same coverage, based on a couple year difference in the timeframe of the coverage purchase, not the timeframe/miles that are covered.

I appreciate your reply, I really do, but I don't think anything in your reply in any way justifies or explains the cost difference for the exact same coverage (60,001 - 100,000 miles).

Maybe it's just me. shrug.

What price did they quote you, and for what coverage?

Maybe you could do me a favor and ask your dealer why the price for the exact same coverage (60,001 - 100,000 miles) would cost more if you wait to buy it when you are closer to the 60k miles. It's the same coverage regardless and I'm having a hell of a time understanding the price difference. (there's another thread about this also)

It is you, trust me. Of course you can't prepay for 40 years of health insurance premiums at a rate based on a 40 year old. Why? Because we are human. Vehicles are machines and every single part is either repairable or replaceable. Those parts have lifespans based on wear and tear. Those factors are used to calculate what warranties cost and why they increase with the mileage and/or years of ownership.
It's exactly the same with a vehicle warranty. They charge you more later in the term because the risk is higher. It's actually rather simple when you think about it. Like I said earlier it's the unknown. Would you pay the same price for a 2 year old used vehicle with 60k on it as you would a new one? Of course not. Why would you expect a warranty company to charge the same for a new vehicle vs a 2 year old vehicle they have no history of? When you are buying a warranty you aren't just buying time you are buying coverage (insurance) and because someone else is willing to cover those fees in a warranty package means that the cost of said warranty is only going to increase as the miles increase on the vehicle. I also mentioned earlier that when vehicles are covered under warranty they are more likely to be brought into the shop more frequently and problems can be addressed much earlier on before they become larger more expensive issues.
Exactly the same as health insurance increases as we age. Why? Risk. As we get older our relative risk for injury or illness increases. How many of you enjoy breaks in your health insurance premiums by having regular physicals done? I do and it totally makes sense. Insurance companies are willing to pass on the savings to someone who is healthy as a reward for good behavior in hopes that their good behavior will continue in regards to their own personal health.
I'm in healthcare so I deal with these issues every day so I could see how the parallels may not be as clear for some as they are to me. However that being said to totally disqualify my analogy because you don't agree with it is foolhardy. I respect your opinion as well but your off base in your assessments and assumptions on this one.

If you want help finding a good deal on an extended warranty the absolute last thing you want to do is insult the dealer by asking them something so silly as suggested above.
Just trying to help you out if you plan on having any leverage going forward.
The other thread has more detail but the net is that his assumption is fraught with error and lacks any semblance of understanding how warranties work.
I would definitely not hesitate to call around to other dealers. Like many on here have posted previously there is a wide margin on the prices of these warranties so there is an opportunity to save some money if you the time to make those calls.

The selling dealer told me that the cost for the 6 year 120K program was about $5400 with maintenance and something closer to about $4K without maintenance. They said that it only included a few hundred dollars of markup in that cost but I am always skeptical. It appears that, unlike other manufacturers like GM, the only place to get an official Infinity warranty is through the dealership so I turned to the net. What I have seen (like the other thread) is that folks got theirs for much less but no specific dealers were mentioned so I am just looking for some places to start calling. They also stressed that after 6 months the price goes up which is also different than with other manufacturers.

Extended Warranty - Any Recommendations?

I'm considering getting an extended warranty as my factory warranty is less than 1,000 miles from expiring.

Has anyone bought one and are there any to steer clear from or that people think are really great?
 
I used Infinity of Scottsdale. My local dealer couldn't come close to the price.

I agree that I don't like the way Infiniti's extended warranty goes up in cost as you get closer to the end of the factory warranty. On all my cars I usually wait until the last month of the factory warranty to purchase my extended warranty. On my Lexus I purchased an Lexus Platinum 8yr/120k for $1920...on my M37 I waited until the end and bought an Infiniti Elite @ 45k for $3,200 8yr/100k...but on my QX56 w/ 50k..it slipped my mind and I let it get to 50k..i couldn't justify paying $3,500 more than I paid for my M37. That is ridiculous. They are both 2011 and both have Tech. $6k+ is just not reasonable unless it covered every part...like bumper to bumper...trim, leather, I mean everything....so I will have a decision to make before I get to November or 60k...they need to revisit this model that they are using for their extended warranty....
 
Elite Wrap extended warranty prices

Morning guys, new owner of CPO 2011 QX56 and wanted to know the going prices of the elite wrap warranties. I purchased 8/120 with $100 deductible for like $3600 and inquire a $0.00 deductible and was told it will be like an extra $600. In reading some other threads I think you can shop around for the best price. Is that accurate or the warranty prices the same since it's all Infiniti. With my 08 QX56 elite wrap 7/100 I didn't have a deductible. Also, I'm tody to the forum, didn't know this existed..
 
Service plans

who bought the "Service" plan from Infiniti for their QX?? not the extended warranty plan, but the service plan that pays for their oil changes and maintenance??

I was at Audi yesterday..."looking".. and they offer a service plan that cost... $800 !!!!... for the 4 years!!!! And that apparently pays for all the oil changes and scheduled maintenance. I've paid $800 just for 90k scheduled maintenance. :mad:

I don't recall being offered a service plan.. if you did get one, how much was it? And was it offered to you unsolicited or did you have to ask for such a plan?

We were offered at time of vehicle purchase a service plan which covered oil changes (filters included) and tire rotations (tire balancing not included) I don't recall the cost. In reading the fine print, most dealerships will state vehicle maintenance is free for the first xx number of years OR xx number of miles. Break it down, it only adds up to oil changes and tire rotations.

Exactly....German cars by the book only require one service a year....so your first big one will probably be 60k...which is after the 4 years.
 
wow.. that sucks if it doesn't include the major scheduled services
