[2011+] QX56 new motor, timing chains, etc

so... if you do the math the $1200 you paid wasn't much of a savings for the maintenance that was rendered had you paid as needed the oil changes and major scheduled service

so what? it was offered.. i took it. :)

all i know is i have not paid for any maintenance service,, and that works for me. ;)

One of the major services ( I cannot recall which interval - maybe 48,000 or 52,000kms) I was quoted $1500.00 for the service.

If the plan was even 2k I would come out ahead....

hmmmm.... maybe I'm wrong with my math. Marc, take out your receipts and add up what those services woulda cost

i dont mean to throw this topic off discussion,, but just to go infiniti.com and read up on the elite platinum maintenance package--its the same thing I have. it covers more than just oil changes.. :p

Hi Guys, I'm the threadstarter of this thread, and I'M BACK!

I think it may have happened again, ALREADY, on the new engine! Wife got the oil changed this morning, on schedule, at a local lube shop. She says the guy comments "Has it been a really really long time since your last oil change??" Um no, why? We are on schedule, around 3500-4000 miles. The guy says "Well it just looks really really dirty, thats all". Okey dokey.

After oil change, wife takes QX56 through automatic car wash and comes home. She hops back in the QX about 15 minutes later to go to a lunch meeting, and calls 30 seconds after leaving, in tears. "I'm coming home, the truck is doing IT again!!" Doing what?? The same thing it did when the engine blew. No power, lurching, will barely run.

Has this thing seriously blown a second engine in the exact same way? A brand new engine?

Now I'm out of warranty. I can't even believe this.

oil color

Yeah, the engine oil does turn dark pretty quickly on the QX. I have noticed that, in fact I changed mine last month and I looked at it today and it is definitely not clear after only about 300 miles. But darker color oil does not mean its dirty or worn out oil. It still will have its lubrication properties when dark, it just may have lots of particles suspended in it. The filter will catch the harmful particles. The oil turning dark quicker could be due to stringent emissions. My 1998 Jeep is less stringent on emissions and the oil will stay a lighter color for months, driven everyday.
If you are worried about it, I suggest sending off a sample to Blackstone oil Laboratory, for an analysis. Its not very expensive and they will tell you if you have more life in your oil or less. Adjust the change interval accordingly.

Sorry to hear that your QX is acting up again,CueExFiftySix. How many miles do you have on the new engine ?
This timing chain issue has me a little worried now. How many of us has had this issue?
Best regards
Parrott

weird... maybe it's an ECM or some other electronic gadget gone wrong. Is the check engine light on??

Timing Chain

We just bought a uses QX56 2011 in Bloomington MN with 47k miles on it. Drove it a week and heard a squealing noise coming from the engine on cloud start ups. We set an appointment and the service advisor said he knew the problem before I even brought it in. He said its a know issue. It took 2 weeks to get the parts and we are on day 3 of the fix. This truck was certified but we also bought the extended warranty up to 120k so we feel we are covered but still want to know if everyone feels the replacement of parts is a good option or should we be asking for a new engine? We drove it 100 miles before my wife was sooo sad her new car had to go in with a major issue.

On the towing side of things with a 2011. How will my towing be at the max of 8500 pounds? Anyone pushed it? Any stories?

Sorry guys, I forgot to update this sooner.

Perhaps I jumped the gun a bit. I took the QX56 out for a drive after the incident, and was unable to replicate the problem. When it first started, I did smell a sulfurish burn smell for a couple seconds from the vents, but it quickly dissipated.

The vehicle has ran fine ever since, from everything we can tell so far.

I'm wondering now if it is possible the automatic car wash somehow got some water somewhere it shouldn't have, and caused a momentary problem. Anyone ever run into that with a newer QX56?

Hi, sorry to hear about your problem. You are VERY LUCKY however, that you bought certified and also bought the warranty to 120k. If you don't mind my asking, do you know how much you paid for the extended warranty to 120k?

I made the utterly boneheaded decision to negotiate the certification out of my purchase to lower the price a bit, and I also don't have the extended warranty. :/

Regarding parts vs new engine, I personally think you will be fine. Getting a new engine also has downsides, and I would imagine they will fix it fine with the newly designed parts.

Here is some recent pricing I got from Courtney at Infiniti of Scottsdale.
My local dealer here in Northern Illinois could not even get close.

QX56 w/ 46125 miles (price and available terms will change once you exceed 50k).

$0 Ded
24mo/24k=$1420
36mo/36k=$2410
36mo/48k=$3130
48mo/48k=$3800
48mo/60k=$4520
60mo/60k=$5490
60mo/70k=$6530

$100 Ded
24mo/24k=$1140
36mo/36k=$1860
36mo/48k=$2380
48mo/48k=$2870
48mo/60k=$3420
60mo/60k=$4140
60mo/70k=$4940

My 6yr/120k warranty, I believe was $2400 ($100 deducible) when I bought the QX new

Timing chain, oil pressure jets, short block....

I bought a 2011 QX56 Certified w/17k mls. I purchased the most expensive warranty - the Infiniti "Elite Extended Protection Plan" extending the Factory Warranty to 100k mls (covers 1,655 components)! Currently have 82k mls.
A week ago it developed a loud high-pitched whine on start-up which went away after about 5 mns. Before I could get to the dealer, it briefly developed a powerful vibration in the steering wheel (which subsided), the car then lurched along at approx 10 mph with rpm's oscillating but would go no higher than 2,000 rpm's. Pulled over and had it towed to dealer. Dealer says I have to pay for "diagnostics"! They have to determine whether it's the oil pressure jets or the short block that needs to be replaced. They conceded that there's a "kit" for this problem. They also told me that another customer brought in a QX56 with exact same problem the day before who has same extended warranty as I have and they're also trying to charge him for "diagnostics". Neither one of us has given them the go-ahead yet. I'm calling Infiniti Consumer Affairs Dvsn next...
"Diagnostics" estimated to be betw 10-15 hrs @ $100- per hr.
80% of the car's mileage has been long-range highway mls.
Anyone any suggestions or ideas?

Yes - My 2011 QX56 w/82k mlx is at the dealer now for either oil pressure jets replacement and/or new short block...

Anyone here had to have an entirely new motor put into a 2011 or newer QX56?

Also, has anyone here run into problems with the timing chain(s) in their 2011 or newer QX56 that resulted in either the timing chains having to be replaced or the entire motor having to be replaced?

Lastly, will having the motor replaced at 50k miles hurt the resale value of the vehicle?

Any and all opinions greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

To elaborate: Recently my Certified 2011 QX56 4WD w/82k started making a loud whining noise at start-up in am (went away after 5 mms). Before I could get it to dealer, one time at start-up the steering wheel vibrated and shuddered violently and then subsided. Check Engine Light came on. The car lurched along at approx 10 mph with tach oscillating but wouldn't accelerate. Had it towed to dealer and they told me the oil pressure jets and/or short block will need to be replaced and that there is an Infiniti "kit" related to this problem. However, my Infiniti "Elite Extended Protection Plan" to 100k will cover the jets/new block but mysteriously does not cover the "Diagnostics"! Dealer wants betw $1,000 - $1,500- for diagnostics which they say is the cost of determining whether they need to replace the oil pressure jets and/or the short block. Have not okayed the work yet.

Thanks

My 2012 QX56 has been in the shop for 3 weeks because of a "timing chain and sprocket issue" . The problem we took it to dealership for was the sound of a slipping/squeaking serpentine belt. The dealership diagnosed it as the timing chain problem and the associated maintenance notice.

Waited a couple of weeks for parts and finally the repair was supposed to be finished today. Got a call that said there was an oil pressure problem and the oil pump would need to be replaced. That would take until the middle of next week.

This is all very concerning on a car with 35,000 miles. Has anyone else had this problem on a 2012 QX56. I was told that the 2012 engine is a completely different engine than the 2011.

At this point, I am thinking of asking for a completely new engine!!!>>?? Frustrated in Austin.

Thanks for any info.

rodcarroll,

education is key, so the first thing i would have done would have been to see if there are any codes at the obd port. if there were, look up those codes and that would give you an idea of what, if any, issues are present. your symptoms dont sound like anything I have heard and it has not been mentioned on this site or the other q sites i frequent--again based on what you have written.

could be an issue with the accelerator sensors if the car is accelerating on its own.

anyway, to get to your question,

if you have this warranty, read over the terms of the warranty. if the diagnostic is supposed to be covered in your warranty, show them them booklet that states that and then your problem will be solved.

you dont have to take you car back to the place you purchased it from to get warranty work done.

if that particular dealer wont budge, then find another dealer who will. calling up consumer affairs only delays you getting back into your car. they will almost always side with the dealer.

Timing belt, oil pressure jets, short block....

RE QX56 - Surprised you haven't anything about this.
It is an issue with QX56's from 2011 to 2013 and inspired Infiniti to create a re-build kit and also issue a bulletin.
The dealer I talked in NJ told me they were back-ordered on the kits for several months and only now have the kits in stock - they have been busy installing these kits. I have found several references to this issue on this forum "timing chain", "short block", "new engine". This is why I know my ex-dealer shouldn't be trying to charge me $1k - $1.5k for "diagnostics" (see my previous post). Their logic for the "diagnostics" charge is that they won't know until they tear the engine apart how extensive the damage is. At worst they will have to replace the short block; at best they'll only have to replace the timing chain and the oil pressure jets. Isn't that what warranties are for? My next step is to have the car towed at Infiniti's expense to the dealer where I bought the car (130 mls away) and have the work done there.
Crazy but I'm not paying my ex-dealer a $1k to activate my warranty.
Will try and get an OPD as you requested.

I hate to hear that. My 2011 has 13700 miles now and is running like a champ. You know the engine was the last thing I thought that would be problematic on these.
Hate that for you rodcarroll. Was on Vacation the last weekend over Memorial day to today and was down at the gulf coast, and we saw at least 6 or 7 QX56 on the interstate and one verified QX80 in Tenn. So they seem to be kinda poplar & unique at the same time.
Keep us posted to your progress

That's Bull$hit if they're charging you a diagnostic fee!! My dealer doesn't charge me for these "diagnostics"... that dealer your at is appropriately named Stealership!!
