[2011+] QX56 new motor, timing chains, etc

I also would like to know the OCI and type of oil used in those that have had timing chain failure. I have used Pennzoil Ultra and Ultra Platinum(new formula) by recommendation of the master tech. He told me that the Pennzoil synthetics are great in the VQ and VK engines. I do notice how discolored the oil gets in the QX vs the M37 but I also know that doesn't mean that the oil has lost any of it lubricating properties but something to think about...

Yeah that oil turns black quick. I use Mobil one synthetic and its turning color after driving just a couple times after a change. Must be something on how they route the EGR valve. I am going to try Valvoline this next time, I have used it in a couple of my other vehicles over the years and in my Jeep it stays light color for a long time. I am going to change it this week or next and will let you know how it goes.

I had the same issue with my car but had to replace the engine at 112,000 miles. When I was told that the timing belt failed I became very suspicious. I did a web search and found a bunch of complaints about the 2011 doing this. I brought it up to the dealer to get Infiniti to pay for it. They told me that Infiniti said that since I was able to get over 100,000 miles, that this was just wear and tear. BS!!!

I happened to run into another owner of a 2011 QX56. I asked him if he had the problem. Funny enough, he said he had multiple engine issues and at 70,000 miles, the dealer recommended replacing the engine because of the timing belt failure!!! But despite being a little past warranty, Infiniti paid for it.

We both had our catalytic converters replaced. We've been religious about getting our oil changed within the dealer's and guidebook's recommendations. Infiniti is well aware that this issue is very pervasive and until someone files a class action lawsuit, they will continue to blame the owners or state that these are isolated cases.

timing chain

Just got a call back from Infinity that they will offer no financial assistance for a $3000 plus repair on my 2011 QX56 with 72,000 miles. (Two thousand over warranty). The defect is obviously a manufacturing defect as evidenced by the replacement oil jets that have been redesigned. This is my second QX, but obviously it will be my last.
 
Wow... 2000 over warranty period and they said "NO"!!! WTF!! I assume you didn't have the extended warranty

Wow!!! Have you always had your QX serviced at the dealership? What oil change intervals were you following?

That's crazy! I have such a great relationship with my dealership that I've already had to things goodwilled on my QX interior the driver side bottom seat cover and the steering wheel due from what I called excessive wear. They even replaced the rear sunshade in my M37 because a wheel fell off the track. They told me not to worry about the timing chain issue and that if it did happen they would take care of me as long as I keep getting my oil changed there and stick with an OCI of 3,750.

$17,000 new engine

You guys are just starting to see the cost of this problem. I just completed 3 months of dealing with Infiniti and they just don't care. I had the timing chain issue along with the oil jets. Dealer said I had to replace the engine. infiniti said out of warranty and they didn't pay a dime. This cost me $17,000. Don't own one of thes out of warranty. Don't buy one of these out of warranty. I love this vehicle but Infiniti won't admit to their problem with this engine.

It's a 2011, QX56 4wd, I purchased it on 3/17/11, it had 86 miles on it and yes I am the original owner, and before you ask I had all of the oil changes made and have records of everyone of them. Oil changes by jiffy lube, dealer and merchants tire. I explained this to the dealer and infiniti and they just don't care.

This is starting to worry me some. What was the mileage of the engine at failure? I have an early production run (Build date: 9/10/10) but I have an 8/120k extended warranty.

This reminds me of issue i had with my Lexus GS350 but at least they did a TSB for the cam gear actuator. Infiniti needs to issues a TSB at least if there is a know fix. This is not acceptable for a premium brand as Infiniti to not step up and admit their is a problem. :mad: This is going to need a class action lawsuit most likely before they admit that they really have an issue this late in the game. I'm going to talk to my dealer and maybe push to have them replace the oil jets now.

I had 89000 miles on it. I drive a lot but almost all on interstate not much stop and go or dusty roads. I hate the thought of a class action suit. Nobody wins but the lawyers. I just want Infiniti to step up and show that they are the top of the line manufacturer like they are supposed to be.

I know....I don't like them either...but if it will make them either step up and extend the warranty or issue a recall then I'd be all for it. I honestly couldn't imagine putting an additional 17k for a motor into this truck that is just going into its 5 yr. This is completely un acceptable especially when there is a know fix for the problem but they will not release it as a TSB as the minimum.

With most of your miles being highway, did you change your oil every 3750 or 7500? And did you use conventional oil or synthetic? Just wondering...I've been trying to piece these issues together. I have 65k on mine and do a mixture of both but I get mine changed every 3750 and use synthetic...I would like to switch to 7500 but I'm worried about this timing chain issue.:eek:
 
I changed the oil every 7500 as recommended by Infiniti although most of the time I used synthetic oil which is advertised to last even longer. There is a technical bulletin out there ITB13-009 for the oil jets and the timing chain, NHTSA Item No. 10051787, service bulletin 351069. With 65000 miles I hope you have the extended warranty, if not go get it tomorrow you need the insurance.

Thanks for that info regarding the TSB. I do have the Infiniti Elite warranty for 8yrs/120k...so I'm ok there but I like to be proactive which apparently Infiniti does not want to be. The reason I didn't get an LX was because I have noticed a drop off in the quality in Lexus vehicles but at least they are owning up to manufacturing errors.

Setting in my Infiniti dealers service department waiting to get an oil change for my new engine on my 2011 QX56 which I recently had to replace due to bad oil jet and bad timing chain. Have 2 years 24000 mile warranty on new engine before I have to get rid of this vehicle. I will get the oil changed every 3750 miles or less in order to keep this engine running as I have learned that if you wait any longer than that it will cost you $17,000 to replace the engine. Just read the recent Consumer Reports magazine and Infiniti took a dive in the ratings for their used cars. I wonder why?
 
I still can't believe that they won't issue a recall or that you have to wait until the damage occurs before they will even attempt to replace the oil jets with the updated ones. I would have thought Infiniti would stand behind their product better than this. Lexus issued two recalls for my GS350....valve springs and cam gear actuator as well as give every one a 6yr/100k powertrain warranty. I guess I see the difference...Infiniti is not quite there yet...

I talked to my friend at the dealership and he told me they have two sitting in the service bay torn down...one for the TSB and the other for a new engine. If infiniti doesn't step up and do the right thing these two will be my first and last Infiniti vehicles. I understand that defective parts are made and installed on all new vehicles but as a company you need to step up and admit when there is a issue. Hell even Dodge finally admitted that they had a problem with the timing chain on their Hemis with MDS...
 
Timing chain replaced

On a cold start after not being driven for hours my 2011 qx56 with 52k miles would make a slight wine and would go away after 10 minutes. I took it into my local Infiniti Service department. Without hesitation the Service rep said it was the timing chain. The timing chain and accessories were all replaced under warranty. Truck is driving great for now. Service rep said that they should issue a recall.

They really should...you know it's a problem if you had to update the oil jet design. Nissan is already taking a hit with their crappy CVT. I have an early model 2011 (built 9/10) and it's got me worried that regardless im going to have to deal
with it soon. I've changed my oil at 3750 since new, now I'm at 63k and used synthetic but I believe it's the inevitable that I'm facing as well
