[2011+] QX56 new motor, timing chains, etc

Well that sucks.

Obviously the replacement kit didn't hold up to lubricating the chain?

I think most dealers know of this Timing chain "issue" !! Mine wasn't surprised. In the long run, if they ever do a recall, you're entitled to a REFUND of whatever you paid... thing is I don't see a recall happening, because it's not like there are 10's of thousands QX56s on the road.. there's only a handful, and a handful does not attract the Fed's attention

I also wonder if the new parts are actually better. Every time I go in for an oil change I ask my Service manager what's the latest on timing chains....lol

When I go in to pick up my M37 from service today or tomorrow I'm going to ask how many they have done.

Or when in the production process did they begin installing the new parts to fix the issue once and for all. What was the date?

That too...but since it won't be ready until next week due to them having to take the dash out to replace the heater core.....sigh...

Ouch. That sounds like a lot of labor. Hope they get it back to you next week.

Hopefully at some point in the production process engineering got involved to get the redesigned parts for the chain squared away. Likely wouldn't make a big announcement, but the service mgr should be on top of stuff like that, changes made for quality control/improvement.

Yeah...my extended warranty already paid for its self....lol

But I plan to find out as much as possible from the master tech that's working on my car and the Service manager...see if they can tell me how the new kit is improved.

I used to think I had this dreaded ting belt issue but realized that our trucks just are kinda loud. Not the engine itself but the fan/belt, I had brought it to dealer and they actually let me hear a few of the new trucks. Does anyone know why our trucks fan/belt sounds like a Mack truck?

That's the electric fan clutch...but if the belt is loud you might have a belt tensioner failing....happened to me...was starting to make a clattering noise.

its the sound of forced air churning through the blades as they spool up to suck air in. part of the nature of forced air induction. have you ever heard a drone? same difference.

i quite like the sound---just heard it this morning when i turned the car on. VAARRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM .... :D

So I picked my car up from the dealership yesterday...after having the heater box assembly replaced...($3,000...thank God I got the extended warranty!!) I spoke with the shop foreman and the master tech that worked on my car about the timing chain issue and they told me they have been seeing more come in once they hit around 70k. The shop foreman also mentioned that at first they thought it was just those that didn't change their oil on time but now they are even starting to see those come in with issues around 80-90k. I told him that was ridiculous and that Infiniti needs to issue a recall or something. He told me that they have been constantly talking to the regional manager about this and that at this time HQ doesn't see this as a problem. I said that is BS. There is no way a timing chain shouldn't outlast a timing belt at least!! If not then what's the point of having a timing chain!!! He told me that they have been stressing the concerns of the customers to HQ but they aren't budging. This is sad...on all my cars that have a timing belt I can get at least 7yrs/105k out of it before I even think about having to change it. Its just a piss poor design that they don't have an answer for. Very sad Nissan...very sad!

Again I think in order for all of us to have a better understanding of the magnitude of this issue we would need to know how many qx's have been sold and how many have had timing chain failures. That would give us all a better idea of the problem even before getting into if there are any common denominators such as Oil change intervals.
I have all of my service work done at two different Infiniti dealers nearby. Neither one has had a timing chain failure come into their shop. Both were aware of it and both confirmed it was only occurring on engines that were not serviced per schedule. I understand others may be hearing otherwise. I think it's all relative.
I sell medical equipment. Machines. I had an angry customer call me last week telling me he had " a bunch of machines fail last week". We have an industry best machine fail rate at less than 1%. So I asked him to quantify what a bunch was. He said 3. Lol. His company purchases around 1000 of the machines per month on average. Well below our 1% fail rate. When I reminded him of this he calmed down as we offer full warranty on our units. Point is sometimes our best efforts lead to unrealistic expectations.

While I agree with you post it still doesn't relieve Nissan of this issue. They have had timing chain issues before. We are not talking about one off issues. If Nissan would have told me that I had to change the timing chain on this engine at 100k at a cost of $5200 I would have gone next door back to the Lexus dealership and bought an LX570. We are not talking about a 1% fail rate. I'm a mechanical engineer so I've seen my fair share of equipment failures and have dealt with customers complaining. Your track record speaks a lot about your company whether you want to admit it or not.

Let me ask you this....whats the point of having a timing chain if I have to change it before 100k? we aren't talking about a issue that you can live with like many of the TSB's...this is an issue that if not handled promptly after the issues show can be the difference between $5k and $17k...on a vehicle with less than 100k.

I could have gotten a Ford or GM if I wasn't going to get more than 100k before deciding if I need to dump it. This is not a one off issue...its a design flaw and needs to be addressed.

wow...there are more QX56/80s out here than I thought... I would have thought no more then 10,000 units yearly... 13,000-15,000 units sold per year.

Well.... I love my Beast... and I've always had it serviced by the dealer (timely, usually between 3500-4500 miles)... but I was one of the unfortunate ones that needed the timing chain replaced... total cost about $2100... but I wasn't charged a dime!! I have over 81k on the Beast.

I was surprised as well regarding how many they sold...and like I said...if they told me that I had to have the timing chain replaced at a certain time interval then I could have made the decision whether or not to purchase this vehicle. Oh well...I guess we will see how this ends up...

I am tired of all of this chitchat. This has been going on for two years. Look at the first post in this string 2013. I spent last year getting my engine replaced. $17,000. I have copied this entire string plus several others and have a meeting set up next week with the largest law firm in Virginia. It's time to do something. I have contacted both of my state senators and so far one US Seantor, we went to high school together. I have also asked for a meeting with the state attorney general armed with my bills and all of your comments. Infiniti can ignore me but they can't ignore a couple of US Senators.

Power moves! I like it! Keep us posted...or at least me...because I agree with you...

Laf... I applaud your drive to get these politicians involved... because there is one thing that politicians love.. and that's being seen on TV and heard on the radio.. "because they fight for the little man".. though all of us here probably make up the top 1%-2% income earners!!!

does the sound start off very quiet and become louder over time? I am hearing something akin to a quiet squeaking from the grille area on cold starts. Seems to be a new sound.
