remember.. the 2011 were the first of the "new" model QX56... typically I don't buy the first year production model of any car... but still, it's a well built truck!
 
2011 timing chain issue

Hello guys, I have a 11 with 48k miles that went into the dealership today for the whinnying noise. I recorded the noise for them since it happens at first start up.. Service advisor knew right off the bat what it was.. They had a repair kit in stock and commenced to breaking down my 11 to put the new part in.. I hope to have it back tmrw. But what I didn't read in all the 15 pages of thread is how they ride once they're repaired.. Like new? Mine is horrible on gas so I'm really hoping it'll improve that issue for me. I also bought CPO with the 8/120k extended warranty. Thoughts on post repair ride guys?
 
petrol consumption is not going to improve on a nearly 7000 pound ride.

no one purchases these cars for the petrol mileage. I get 13.4 on a good day ('course thats LA stop and go traffic and me keeping my foot in the tank!) ;-)
 
I haven't heard of anyone having that issue again after the repair. I think their was one person on here who bought one that had the engine replace before it was purchased and had the timing chain fail again.

What were your oil change intervals or the previous owners?

And yes...I have yet to get anywhere close to 16 or better...

Was at the dealer yesterday and was told 3750 for regular oil, 6000 for synthetic. I run synthetic in all my vehicles, and still have it changed at 3,000 miles. A small investment that's brought long life out of our various vehicles.

We're averaging about 15.5 mph around town in ours, but we get a boost because we're at 5600' elevation. Also have found it's groove where it's running low rpm's around town, in addition to keeping my foot out of it. One road trip so far to the Black Hills - about 6 hours each direction yielded a combined total of 17.8 for the trip doing 75-80 mph.

This thread is why I purchased the 8/120 for our 12'.

Picked my Q up today from the dealer after the timing chain kit was installed. I must say he does feel a bit more spy.. Passing gear kicking in much quicker... I smell antifreeze when I shut him off. But I think recall reading something about antifreeze in an earlier thread..

all they did was reset the ECM which explains the "spy" :D feel you are experiencing. over time the car will settle into the proper air/fuel setup. you can (and should) reset the ECM often to clear out any old driving habits the ECM has learned. I do this every month or so... also the throttle learn procedure.
 
2011 qx56

I have a 2011. 80K miles. Started hearing the noise around 77-78K or so, but only a few times when it was really cold outside. Timing chain. The noise was exactly as described on this forum.

I brought it home to discuss the options with my wife - trade or fix. As I was about to take it back for service, the check engine light came on, and it wouldnt rev past ~1500 RPMs. Had it towed to the shop. Service adviser said that pieces of the chain had started to come off. Thankfully, no extra damage was done.

Has been a fantastic vehicle otherwise. Bought it used in late 2012 with ~30K miles on it.

New to the forum with an '11 with 75k. How much is the fix? I haven't heard the noise that is described but want to be prepared either way.
 
My fix was about $2k... (covered under my extended warranty)... some have paid over $4500, but I don't know why the big price gap.

Same story here...Just happened yesterday (2011 QX56 w/55k).

Whining noise from engine on the cold January/February AMs, my wife said the car felt sluggish at times of the expressway, and yesterday it did not start. Towed it to the dealer and said it needed a new timing chain.

The only good news is they said it was covered under the powertrain warranty; otherwise it would have been 3.5k. Supposedly it will be ready for pick this Saturday.

We are driving to Fl from MI is 2 weeks. Glad it happened now.

I just hope Infiniti has A)solved the problem and B)steps up to the plate and covers the cost for all owners with the problem. Because other than this, and it poor milage (which i knew about when buying the car) it has been a great vehicle.
 
Mine was $3500. No warranty.

It was a very short amount of time between the first noise and the truck breaking down. ~3K miles.
 
Catalytic Converter

One thing he did tell me was in the motors where the timing chain has failed it can fill the catalytic converters full of fuel causing them to prematurely fail later on. He just covered an out of warranty converter for an 11 qx that they replaced the timing chain on several months back under warranty. The vehicle was out of warranty when the converter failed and Infiniti tried to refuse paying for it saying it was unrelated

Well, this explains some things. I bought my '11 last May with 53,000 miles on it. In August, (60,000) I heard the squealing engine noise associated with the timing chain problems, so in my case, it definitely wasn't associated with cold weather. It was probably in the 90s. I Googled the symptoms and found this thread, thankfully. I was able to drive it to the dealer 300 miles away, was given a QX56 loaner, and mine was returned to me on a flatbed wrecker.
It was covered by my extended warranty.

There was only one time it completely died while I was driving it, but it started right back up. That week is when I headed to the dealer. The noise was so loud by then, I was afraid it might quit before I got there. I wouldn't even turn it off when I stopped.

After reading about it here, I began using premium gas after the timing chain was fixed.

Now, seven months after the timing chain, the Check Engine Soon light came on. For a couple of months, I thought it was sluggish, but couldn't get my husband to acknowledge it. The code seemed to indicate catalytic converter and air filters. Took the day off work to drive it to the dealer last Friday. It's still there. Haven't heard a word from them. I am, however, enjoying driving the QX60 Hybrid loaner, but I wouldn't choose it over my QX56.
 
Joining the club. 77k miles. Early '12 production. No longer under warranty. Just received ~$4k quote.

Damn....what were your OCIs? Did you use conventional or synthetic oil?
 
OCI at the stated interval. Mobile 1 every single time
 
2011 just hit 40k, sometimes at startup hear sound similar to an electric remote control car...high pitched noise but really need to listen carefully over the noise of engine fan. Have another 30k on the powertrain. Fingers crossed
 
I just hit 71k in my 2011...im covered until 10/2018 or 120k...ive been using Pennzoil Ultra and Ultra Platnium...supposed to be one of the better oils with best cleaning synthetics...so we will see if its doing a good job.

Goblue, what region are you located in? And when you say you followed the OCI was it the 3,750 or 7,500...ive been changing mine at 3,750 because I'm
