kit to view DVD while in motion

All,

earlier i had mentioned there is a kit a fellow forum member was making that allows one to play DVDs and use the other controls that grey out while the parking brake is off and the car is in motion. it was initially made for the 08+ armadas.

i finally had time to install this kit and it works just as well on the 2012 (and 2011) QX. I had the guy build the kit because i am not savvy with those kinds of things.

the kit will cost $50-60 bux depending on if you want a lighted switch or not. shipping is included and also some zip ties.

you can also purchase the parts (couple of relays, diode, DPDT switch, wiring) and wire it up yourself. parts are about 20 bux or so.

what you will need to do, which is different from other modules on the market, is you must splice into the VSS and park brake wire behind the radio. this kit will give you full control of the DVD and other options whilst the car is in motion just as the other modules on the interwebs do. Again the only difference is you splice into those two wires.

I have used this kit in my 08 armada when i purchased it in 08 and it gave me reliable service up until i sold it for the 12 qx.

on the qx, i drilled a hole right next to the OBDII port to mount the switch and it looks like OEM. the iba button is there also... which i didnt know until a week or so after i purchased the car.. :D

his name is Shane over at tintmasters: http://www.tintmasters.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5059

quality of parts and work is second to none.

so if you want other alternatives to higher priced options, give this a try.

Do it yourself on your $75,000 car????????

I think it is great that someone has developed a kit to do what other vendors are charging $300+ for. However, having tried to install a car stereo, some 30 years ago, and seeing all of the wiring under my dash melt away, I think I will leave it to the experts to do wiring modifications to my vehicles.

Do not get me wrong, if you have the ability and talent go for it. But I for one do not want to mess with "splicing" into the wiring of my $70,000+ vehicle. I paid the price for the engineered kit and for installation from a professional. It only cost $60 for the installation, there is no evidence that anything was taken apart and my car can be returned to totally stock condition, should the need arise.

You can also save money by removing your kids braces too, but I will also leave that up to my friendly orthodontist!

Enjoy!

c'mon mark, really??

mark are you the owner/seller of the company that sells the prestige kit? :) if not, you sound like him.. and his name is mark.. ;)

i am not sure why you would come here and try to brow beat this kit. it does exactly what your kit does in the end.

many people splice into their wiring on their cars.. ever heard of aftermarket AV systems? :D car alarms? remote start?
matter of fact, the infiniti impact sensor module SPLICES into the cars wiring!! its not plug n play.. and this is a genuine nissan part!

i, and many others, can follow directions.. even those who have purchased the more expensive kit installed it themselves.

some people dont want to splice into their cars, so they buy your kit.

some dont have time to install the higher cost kit or any kit, so they hire someone to do it.

nothing it guaranteed to work.. even your box can cause a mishap to happen..

i think its unprofessional to try to allude that someone else's kit can cause wiring to melt..

ive used this kit in my 08 armada for 3 years and had zero issues with it. i expect the same quality here.

so if i had a car that cost 10K it would be OK to install this kit in it? what does the fact that the q costs 60k+ have to do what the point? a car is a car. wiring is wiring..

this kit has been out since at least 2008 and there are hundreds of people who have installed them in their cars and also have made their own kit!

if i had disposable cash for such projects i may have went ahead to bought the more expensive kit.. but i can read directions and it was really a no brainer to install this kit. the dash pieces are easy to come off and i have no squeaks or rattles...

i am here to show people there are alternatives out there. nothing more..

Not the same "Mark"

I can assure you that I have nothing to do with the Prestige company. You will note that I prefaced my comments by saying if you have the experience and technical knowledge "go for it". However, most of us do not.

I truly am sincere when I say that I think it is great that people, such as yourself, share your knowledge with the various forums on the internet. I have learned a great deal over the years on various forums and have saved a great deal of money with "group buys" and technical tips. I am very thankful for individuals, like yourself that participate.

The bottom line is that no disrespect to you or your product was intended, just a word of caution to those who do not share your background in modifying complex electrical systems in their cars. I have seen too many overconfident individuals do real damage to their cars. For me, paying a professional to do it correctly is worth the extra cost.

I know there's a device to install to allow viewing of the DVD in the front console.

Does anyone have a step-by-step on its purchase and installation??

also... will the navigation work while the DVD is playing in the front???

hi,

there are two products i know on the market.

one is about 300 bucks.

another is about 60 bux.

both do the exact same thing.

the 300 dollar unit has instructions. its just plug and play.

the 60 dollar unit you have to actually splice into the vehicle speed sense wire and the parking brake wire.

both units accomplish this but the 300 dollar one does not require you to do any wire splicing.

both units require you to remove the HU to install.

the GPS will NOT work properly when in either system is working. these units "trick" the gyro-compass in the HU into thinking you are not moving so it does not rely on any signals until it can sense again the vehicle is in motion.

and besides, if the passenger is watching the dvd up front and the driver wants to use the GPS, you cant do both at the same time anyway. :)

i have the 60 dollar version. i had it on my 2008 armada and i purchased a new kit for the 2012 qx. i never ever had any issues with this version, which is why i bought a second one...

let me know if you need any more follow up.

is it worth the $300 smackers??? can u turn off the front DVD and restart the Nav with the flip of a button, and then flip back???

Yes, with the Prestigious Society module you can flip back and forth from DVD to Nav with the touch of a button.

probably for the sake of simplicity .. I'll pay 300buckeroos for it...

Can someone provide a link to both systems? I'm interested in doing this but don't know which option to go with until I can see the specs or install instructions for both.

both options end up doing the same.

one is in a fancy black box no one will ever see and terminates into a push button switch you install under the dash.

one is a couple of relays and terminates in a DPDT switch you install under the dash.

one costs $300.00
one costs about $30 bux in materials.

I have the one that costs $30 bux in materials. I have had two of these.. one was (and still was when i sold it) in my 2008 armada and now i purchased a new set for the 2012 Q.

the link to the $300.00 one should be in this thread. if you search on google for "2008 front display mod" , the first post should take you to one of the top Armada sites on this entire interwebs. that thread has all the info you need. you may even see a recognizable member posting there also.. ;)

whichever way you go, its a treat to be able to have the mod in place. it really is a nice feature to have for the front passenger... ;)

I prefer the $30 option but am concerned about how difficult it is to install, if I'll be able to get my car put back together and don't know what materials I need to buy. Where can I find that information?

uw,

i posted the search terms you need to source this info. this will take you directly to the thread i dont want to directly post a link to a competitor site here.

you will need 2 relays, a DPDT switch and wire. you only have to splice and tap into the VSS and parking brake wires.

regardless of which option you take, you have to remove the HU, and the trim that surrounds the HU, and the finisher under the steering wheel.

if you can read directions, you can install this. I know of a guy who can make this for 60 bux (he will charge for labor and shipping which equals 60 bux, parts included) or you can go to your local electronics store and pick up the parts. i have installed two of these in my old armada and now the Q and all works well.

if you do not want to go through making the mod and prefer to use the plug and play method of the other system, bear in mind you will still need to remove panels and the HU to get to these two wiring locations on the HU harness.

Has anyone been able to put the button/switch in the dash itself, or do u leave it dangling?? If you have incorporated it into the dash.. let's see some pics!!!

LOL @ uwhusky,

Head Unit . :p

rough, you have the 300 dollar system yea? have you ever thought of putting it under the steering wheel on the bottom plastic finisher? the switch i use i have it under there near the IBA button...

Just installed the Prestigious society module. Works as advertised. The install was a bit more involved than I expected and had me questioning my decision to do it myself a few times. I was really afraid I was going to break a retainer clip. The instructions are pretty good but it can't convey all the details that experience gives. Very glad I did it and for me the $300 is worth it given the plug and play and no need to cut aspect.

I ran the remote under the center console and up into the coin holder. It sits nicely in there and can be reached by the passenger. I had thought to get a switch wired into the left side of the dash for a factory look but the access by passengers was more important.

Visor monitor

Another option is the buy a visor monitor to see the DVD in the front seat. I bought one on E Bay for cheap and installed in Toyota Sequoia to get around this problem.

2011 nissan / infinity navigation video-in-motion interface

Here are the instructions included with the $60 unit. It looks pretty simple. Now I'm just trying to find instructions on removing the HU. Can anybody help with this? Feel free to send me a message if you wish. Thanks!
