[2011+] QX56 new motor, timing chains, etc

there is an ECM and throttle learn procedure i posted on this forum. look for the thread and try those procedures. they are free and you can complete them in a few minutes sitting in your seat in the car.

Have a question...I see everyone changing their oil every 3750 miles. Is That for synthetic oil as well ?

i use plain old fossil oil and change it every 3K

syn can go longer.. 5k ive seen. check out bobistheoilguy website for more info on oil...

I know infiniti use regular or synthetic oil. if you are using synthetic, do they still recommend changing every 3750 or every 5000 depending on the type of synthetic oil they are using. I'm only asking because I'm seeing when it come to getting your vehicle fixed under warranty they asking to see your maintenance log to make sure you are changing your oil by the book(every 3750).

Timing Chain

I just bought my 2012 QX56 two weeks ago after trading in my 2010 and the timing chain went with 45,000 miles on the vehicle. A warranty issue for the moment but should I be concerned about long term effects on the engine or a recurrence after fix? It will be out of warranty soon and I don't want to go through what others have recounted here. Any thoughts?

Supposedly the new parts are upgraded...so you shouldn't have that problem again...

Hello, first time infinity owner here. Traded in my Beemer for a "reliable" infinity 2011 QX56. My story is one of engine shudder and eventually having it strand me and unable to get to work. It would first present itself as rough idle right after a cold start and the engine wouldn't go above ~3000 RPM. At first you could then shut the truck off and restart it and it would be fine. However, I still sent it into the shop after it happened and they though it was one of the VCT solenoids. So they replaced that (took a week) and gave the truck back. Within a couple of days it did it again. Back to the shop to have the other VCT solenoid replaced.. (Another week gone). After getting the truck back again, it lasted only another few days and then it stranded me b/c it would not go over 1000 RPM / 10 MPH, and restarting it made no difference, had to call the tow truck. 

Here is where the real fun begins.

The dealer had the truck for a week and could not replicate the issue. I called them on day 5 or 6 and re-iterated that the issue happens on a cold start and it you would know right away if you tried to drive it more than 150 feet.

On day 7 they replicated the issue and pulled a bunch of codes. They came back telling me it was the timing chain and a bunch of other goodies that would have to be replaced. Please note that this truck never made any of the whining or other noises reported here on the forum during cold startup.(other than then the electric fan test)

3 weeks LATER I got the truck back with 5k worth of parts (and that is with a 25% discount on parts) and 3k in labor. Thankfully all covered by the aftermarket warranty I purchased for the truck.

I was told that the cause of all this damage was the faulty OIL JETS for the timing chain area that were replaced with upgraded parts so this "won't happen again". I was(and still am) shocked to find out that this infinity had just rang up a 8k repair bill in the first month I had owned it. This is far more than I had ever spent on my M5!

Here is the list of parts they replaced in case anyone else needs the info:

You may notice that they had to replace the high pressure fuel pump too. (had not seen this before on this thread.) That part alone is 2 grand! The service advisor said "they don't have to replace those too often". I remarked that when it is buried 17 hours’ worth of work in the engine that it should NEVER have to be replaced..

So hopefully the truck will be fine now after being in the shop 5 weeks out of the last 8 I have owned it. Word to the wise, if you are going to get one of these used, make sure you get a warranty that covers these types of repairs like MaxCare did. ;)

Question about the timing chain replacement issue.... should they also change out the main engine BELT during this repair; (whether worn , slight worn or not...regardless.. should it be changed during the the timing chain procedure) ???

Hi, i have been reading posts regarding qx56 and making a loud winding noice around the engine fan. was this issue ever resolved for anyone in this forum? I have a 2011 QX56 with 90000 miles that is also making this noise at start up, and then disipating after several minutes. the noice becomes louder the more i rev the engine. again it is a very loud blowing sound, like a fan. anyone can help me would be much appreciated as i live nowhere near a dealership
thanks
Amy

amy you are most likely hearing the viscous mechanical fan. this will turn on often if the engine room is at a certain temp or you have the HVAC on and in stop and go/ hot traffic.

Yeah I agree with Marc. That fan sounds like a blower when the clutch locks and starts moving copious amounts air for the motor. The belt on our QX56 makes some noise on foggy mornings. Just so its not a high pitch metallic squeal, you are good,
Have a good one !

I have a 2011 and have had to have the timing chain replaced as well. Also had the cats replaced and its in the shop now to replace the other cats....Im really disappointed in this vehicle even though its all been covered under warranty. But the warranty will be up soon so im thinking of getting rid of it or an aftermarket warranty. Sad part is I love the vehicle. But its in the shop evey three months for something. Oh yeah I also have replaced the battery twice....

the qx is a solid vehicle. for every two or three who post here of issues (typical of man made/assembly line items) there are hundreds (myself included) who have no issues.

Audi had an issue with one model of their engines (widely known on enthusiast sites) as well.
the point is nissan have made the following model years better.

one of the main reasons I dont get version 1 of anything (reason why I waited to get the second year model).

I know I sound like a broken record but it is what it is. The only problem I have with that is that for 11 and most of 12's it's a known issue that will most likely require an expensive repair. Making the following years better and saying sorry to the 11 and 12 owners doesn't cut it. I'm saying own up to your mistake and issue a recall. The master tech at my dealer said it's just a matter of when for 11's and some 12's. I really expected more from Infiniti. At the minimum they should have given an extended warranty to those model years.

Lexus issued a recall and gave an extended warranty on my GS350 for the valve spring recall. I never heard of one car coming in with a broken valve spring to my dealer...but they tried to it right. That's all I'm saying...make it right Nissan...smh

Yup... I just had the 2nd CAT replaced. I don't know why they didn't replace it when the first one went out. Ironically, the service rep said "we'll probably replace the other in the next year or so"... sure nuff, next year came, and it's in the shop for the replacement. Good thing I bought the 6yr/120k warranty... otherwise I'd be really upset.

I worked at infiniti up to last month. There is huge problem with needing timing chain tensioners replaced before reaching a 100,000 miles. There repairs cost the customer at least $5500 and it is nightmare for the technician doing the repair. At least two a month of these trucks where in need of repair. The cause of the problem has not been determined yet either which even more scary. I can not say for sure but it is do to oil changes not being done every 3750 miles and were waiting till 5000 miles. The truck sounds like a super charger while being revved up to higher rpm's. Challenge you to call your infiniti dealer that you have a relationship with and tell them your truck sounds like a super charger was installed. It is impossible to diagnosis over the phone but the service advisor will sayost likely timing chain. The next most common issue is the cats. That showed a history of not running premium gas in the car. I love the Infiniti brand and they are great cars that very affordable to maintain compared to other luxury cars.

As prior service advisor for Infiniti had some questions for you. With the timing chain did you change your oil every 3750 miles and use at least semi synthetic oil. If you read my pruor post, I love Infiniti. With that said they need to figure the cause of the tensioners going bad and do recall.
2nd did you use premium gas and keep your air filters clean. After market paper filters and k&n air filters do not mix well with these trucks.

no one is saying there are not real world issues with the things mentioned in this thread, but name one car that does not have issues?

i still stand by my original posts: this q is a solid vehicle. my car does sound like a supercharger because i took off the resonator and stock muff and put on a magnaflow. :D

nonetheless, thank you for sharing your experiences...

I posted up a couple pages previously, but I'll just ask this now:

Does anyone know when Infiniti started using upgraded parts on the production line to cure this problem? Are 2014 or 2015 models likely safe?

Thanks!

I don't think there is any official indication as to when the upgraded parts started being used. I did a bunch of research, and I believe I posted it in one of these threads, where I couldn't find any TSB for 2014 or higher.

Good day folks....
I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. Thanks to you guys,I'm picking up my 2011 QX56 on thursday. And yes,I knew about the timing chain 'fiasco' but I'm a sucker for anything to do with Nissan Patrol.
When I went to the dealer to look, inspect and test drive the truck,I asked for the service history(37 pages) and in front of my wife, the receptionist, the manager and the sales guy,I said there's going to be a page in there that says the timing chains have been replaced....and what do you know...??
Timing chain, oil jets etc were changed at 106xxxkms...they all looked at me like I'm a wizard. The manager was like wtf.....you really did your homework.
I joked and told him,try google and it will be your best friend.
I've been lurking around the forum and reading for a while before joining today.Apparently this is not an isolated case, one of the tech also told me they have done timing chains on almost all the 2011's they've sold.....sigh...wow.
Anyways,my question is,those that have their timing chains replaced, has there be a re-occurrence..? For my piece of mind,I bought an extra 2yrs power train warranty.
You never know.
