Winter tire/wheel options

18" Winter Wheel & Tire Combo....

Found the perfect size rim & tire for winter use. Makes a HUGE difference in driveability and also will extend the life of both sets of tires since i'm splitting use....

I got the wheels from www.discounttire.com , It looks like I bought their only set in gunmetal gray but they do have bronz & matte black. I'm not sure when they will restock, you'd have to call and find out.

The wheels look really sharp and very worth their $$$$
 
Gumbey, how's your ride on 22" winters? How's the grip? I'm wondering whether to get a new set of rims or simply change the tires on the same 22" rims

No issues whatsoever. Ride is super smooth and grip is fantastic. I've said it before here and that is I rarely put it in 4WD unless the snow is super deep. Let me tell you, this far north we get it cold and we get it snowy. They rarely plow the main streets and the side streets are cleaned once per winter. It's in AUTO 95% of the time and I chalk it up to the great 4wd system but moreso the grippy Blizzaks.

Of course you do get a bit more hum from the tires on dry pavement. But the trade off is you do not need to get a separate set of wheels and sensors (prob not cheap). The downside is that you need to go to the dealer (or tire shop) to get the tires swapped out as well you are using the 22's in Winter and risk curbing them or worse getting them pitted from salt and stone debris.

For me, my dealer stores my Summer / Winter tires so I do not need to lug them around. I also coincide the winter tire swap over with a service interval so it's not out of my way.
 
the wheels cost me $160 each and the sensors were $ 60 each. So a total about $900 minus the tires and mounting
 
update. I'm so glad I did this swap in my wife's car. The weather is horrible and the roads are so frozen at night that my personal car slides like its on ice except its just the asphalt frozen solid

I had my qx serviced last week. While conversing with the GM about new tires and how poorly the oem tires handle any type of snow and ice he let me know that he had a set of Blizzaks that would fit my truck.
They are amazing!!
I never even considered winter tires previously. I would not want to go without them now.
 
Winter Tires w/50,000 guarantee

Check out the Les Schwab Wild Country XTX Sport. It has the snowflake mountain symbol and a 50,000 mile warranty. That means you can run them all year without having to switch out every fall & spring. If you don't get the full 50,000 miles take them in for the prorated credit and buy another set. No longer need to own two sets of tires for winter and summer!!!:)

Thanx to Gumbey for your info on the 22" Blizzaks. I am not quite as North as you are, but get similar weather. We just jumped into the Infiniti world by purchasing a 2011 QX56 with 22" tires.
I definitely want to get winter tires for it, was quoted $370/per for the Blizzaks by local tire shop, but am thinking I should go to a "cheap" rim for the winters......

Nice....how far north in BC are you? $370 is an OK price for those tires. Remember they're 22's!

yeah, I thought the price was decent since they are 22's...I'm in Dawson Creek.

cbkqx56....thanks...but shipping costs would be over $500 for me.....pretty much cancels out the cost saving, plus I have a good repore with the Local shop here....

back to this thread again....still scratching the head on rims/tires. I wasn't keen on running the 22"s with Blizzacks in the winter...want to save the rims.....but it seems can't get 20's in steel, only alloy. Dealer says I can go to 18"...and I know a bunch have, but as 1 member wrote, they are not factory authorized. Concerned about highway driving with the 18's and warranty coverage. So fight the winter with the 22's and hope they survive? or go to the 20's anyways....even though they are alloy, so I still have to be careful with the ruts/curbing them.....opinions please?
 
i haven't had damage to my 22s in the winter...well, not because it was winter anyway...curbs are always there to hit.
 
I have rolled for 2 winters with my OEM 22's on Blizzaks and have no ill effects whatsoever. Of course there is always a risk you could curb it in a slide, but its a just that....a risk.
