Winter tire/wheel options

Are the 18 inch rims even able to fit and clear the brake calipers? I would think to go only as small as the OEM 20 inch size.

Personally, I just went with 22 inch winters and use the same rims. Saves me from having to buy new TPMS sensors.
 
Good point. I'll look into the caliper issue and post what I learn.

I figure the sensors will pay for themselves from savings from mounting/balancing fees not paid.
 
I agree. the 22" tires are horrible in the snow. I got a set of 18" wheels and Blizzaks from Tirerack and couldn't be happer. Skipped the TPMS option as reprogramming between rotations was a dealer only service.

I get a lot of positive complements on the truck with the winter wheels, which were on the cheaper end of the scale. 18x8.5 Enkei Performance GRAB6 BLK PAINT

I now have a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited if the weather gets real nasty, but for the most part if it gets like that, I stay home.

Here in the Seattle area there have been a couple instances where when it has snowed it has taken people 8 to 12 hours to get home from work. I'm not going to sit in a traffic jam for that long.

I use 22's in the winter and literally have had zero problems. Traction and grip is superb. In fact I usually leave it AUTO most of the time as the system works great, unless I get 3 or 4 feet of snow in one sitting then I lock it down. I also assume I get more snow and lower temps than most any other QX56 around here...

The tire folks I am working with are confident about the 18" being compatible. (And, GoBlue's picture is pretty definitive.) The TPMS recalibration, if only a dealer service, seems like a bother I can do without...Will check on that one too...

I get the yellow TPMS triangle without the TPMS modules in the tire. It gets ignored. I don't get tire pressure and my speed/odo is off 1-2%.

Only certain 18" wheels would work but I did not have problems at tire rack plugging in my vehicle info and coming up with a couple options.

If you haven't already made your purchase you may consider a 20" wheel and tire set. As others have pointed out, the Blizzak winter tire from Bridgestone is a great choice. Make sure whatever tires you buy are properly rated for your vehicle as 18" size is not a factory size for your vehicle. Good luck!
 
Bought my 275/60/20 Blizzaks with black KMC D2 wheels from Discount Tire with TPMS and they programmed them for me. Discount Tire also gives free lifetime tire rotations so you don't have to pay the dealer to do it and reprogram the sensors. I can't say enough about the excellent customer service I received from DT. Blizzaks are great and only second in snow and ice to Nokians which cost twice the price. You don't need a dealer to reprogram your TPMS as my DT dealer does it...if they can't or don't know how to program your sensors I wouldn't trust them in taking their time on balancing your wheels and tires.
 
got some nice 18" rims with blizzaks for the qx56. Didnt feel comfortable with the wife and kid(s) with the 22's and oem tires. The braking was horrible even in light snow.

Can you share the bolt pattern and offset please?
 
I've been less than impressed with the QX in the snow. Maybe it's a combination of the poor oem tire performance and the torque. I have used the snow feature and I hate it as well but it works. I have to be really careful going into turns like a parking spot for instance or a traffic light because it will lose traction and slide around or push the front wheels.
The Tahoe we had previously had much more aggressive tires and was great in the snow as is my pickup. I feel like I'm running slicks sometimes so later on this summer when it's time to new shoes I will definitely be looking at a better a/t tire.
Any suggestions? 20" rims on ours and I don't care to run winter/summer tires as in Michgian we only get about 3 months of summer anyways. Lol.

Exactly, I have a 2007 Tahoe that is great in the snow. I guess that's the all wheel drive pulling the front end instead of the planted front end of the Tahoe.
 
:)Have to agree with the above post from KC. It is unfortunate that the car that remains parked a home during the snowstorms and snow drifts is actually the big guy while the smaller vehicles - one CUV with all seasons and a sedan with winters fare much much better. Found my self shopping online, might end up with Blizzaks but I might need to buy rims.
Has anyone runs Winters/Blizzaks on 22's? how do they hold up ridewise and regarding durability?
If I had to get new rims to boot, will smaller 18's be better than 20's? thanks for any feedback
