QX56 Loves & No loves...

Now that we've had the QX long enough I can weigh in on this discussion, there's very little I dislike. The OP had a great list of the loves...I could add a couple of more pages. To sum it up, I can escort executives to lunch during the week in it and effortlessly tow our boat to the lake with it on the weekends in style. There aren't a whole lot of vehicles that can do both so well.

A few other loves I didn't see listed above:

- Power folding 2d row seats...or ejection seats as we call them. They're a little violent when they fold, but it's very convenient to be able to roll them forward from the driver's seat.

- Surround sound stereo sounds amazing when kids are watching movies

- Air conditioned seats are great as the temperature is rising.

- The simplicity of the menus and controls. The voice recognition is decent and everything else is where you'd expect to find it.

- It's been mentioned, but worth stating again as my favorite thing: the combination of engine, transmission, and suspension. This vehicle handles like something a fraction of its size and hits the perfect balance of performance, comfort, and gas mileage (really not that bad for something this size).

If I was being really, really nit-picky, a few opportunities to improve:

- Blu-ray player rather than DVD. Even though the screen quality might not be HD, I don't own any movies released in the last 5 years in DVD format. The video inputs allow the kids to either play movies we own on the iPad or stream Netflix easily, so it's not a big concern.

- My "anti-collision" alarm occasionally goes off for no reason. I like to keep this sensor active because it sometimes detects traffic slowing in front of me before I do. I've had a few times in the open road where it will beep without any obstacle in front of me. Maybe it's a calibration issue with mine...not sure.

- Infiniti could have included an exclusive step-ladder so I could wash the roof. Ok...I'm obviously out of improvement opportunities at this point.

Should have added the sliding and tilting 2nd row seats like the JX as an option so when a child seat is in place people can access 3rd row seating without removing it. Also don't like the small center console storage compartment. The Sequoia console is massive in comparison. The Nav unit sucks compared to our previous MDX. Had an annoying service light come on for a software upgrade 3 weeks after getting it serviced.

Love the quietness of the ride on freeways and how easily the 5.6L brings the QX up to speed. Engine and tranny are smooth and barely feel the shifts. Visibility is excellent for such a big vehicle and love the blindspot warning lights on the sideview mirrors.

If you think the nav is bad on this, try a Jeep. That thing was a second generation Etch-A-Sketch, if that.

"Nav unit suks".. care to elaborate? ;)

and what "software update" did you need? just curious is all. :o:

Marctronixx, I highly respect your input on the forum and your knowledge, but I go with the same statement. Compared to the MDX, the nav does suck -it's not bad all things taken together, but it is not as flexible. Unless your have driven and know the MDX well, you do not need to bring on the sarcasm. The QX is a great car but is not the greatest at everything

My post was directed to 'dmd2005', but c'mon my friend, I asked a legitimate question. No sarcasm--I even put up a smily face. :o

Saying "the nav sucks" does not talk about what is lacking to the end user. I sincerely want to know where the system sucks so i can get a better understanding of what the op is speaking about.

there are shortcuts on everything and one product will not please all. I have not driven an MDX nor used its nav system but I am sure there are some things with the MDX that you did not like, so again no sarcasm , just asking curious questions.

I have driven Armadas since 2006 and now the Q so I know an awful lot about this car and its design as I made it a point to research and talk to master techs who work on these machines.

the MDX is a great car but is also not the greatest at everything. After all, the Q won you over didn't it?? ;) (tongue in cheek bro..) :)

I'll second Eleven.. and say the navigation is fair at best. Seems likes it takes me in a round about ways at times. I wish Detour was available withOUT the darn XM feature.

I'll say it again.. the voice recognition SUCKS!!!

-Wish the rear window opened, instead of the whole rear door.
-unless I'm missing something, the ventilated seats do not cool greatly. Already tested in the TX heat.

Got it:
Second row leg room
Fold flat rear seats
High seat position (I swear it has to be higher than my old GMC Yukon)

Missed:
Stock rear dvd screen is pretty small
Is that the best place for the clock?

nav

Yeah, I kinda like the Q's Nav. It follows along wherever I go. It has never lost track of me, yet. :D
I like the clock in the middle of the dash, It must be the easiest one to set after daylight savings time.

Next time you are changing your oil and are up under the QX, (or its up on the rack at the dealer) ask to take a look underneath it. Look at those precision welds and the engineering. Notice the small drip tray accurately positioned so that when you remove the oil filter, the oil is collected and not allowed to drip on the cross-member and make a mess. It is quite heavy duty, real frame, heavy duty transmission, transfer case if you are 4wd, and a aluminum drive shaft, (save weight). No stamped steel.
Yeah I would have had the headlight switch have the 'auto on' in the last position instead of the first, so the headlights don't come on when you are turning them off, but that's baby cheit.
Where it really counts, (motor, & Underneath) the QX is one the best built, heavy duty and advanced in design. No uni-frame here.

I'm curious to your bluetooth comment. Maybe you should see your dealer and have your unit upgraded? Its lightyears better than anything GM has produced in the past 5 years.
Cameras are positioned at an angle? What angle are you looking for? I find the 360 to be incredible for parking and all of my camera angles are exactly where they need to be.
Camera quality is as good or better than anything on the market. I have seen a few aftermarket that are better but not many.

My opinions of course.

I'll check with the dealer, but everyone comments and when I talk to my wife, the Bluetooth is bad.

The rear camera is at an angle so your drivers side rear is off a bit. And picture quality is not all that great. My 2011 ford f150 has better picture quality.

Now you got me to wondering about my camera angle so I'm going to have to check :D

Maybe the position of the camera on your Ford is influencing the view? Or maybe something we haven't even discussed, pixel quality of the viewing area comparatively. I know Ford has some really good products with their screens, Sync is in my opinion about as good as anything on the market and the price point is baffling good!
I have an aftermarket camera on my 05 chevy silverado displayed through a Pioneer avic x920bt headunit and the view is like HD compared to the Infiniti. My camera is in a license plate mount aimed right at the ball on my hitch though so my viewing area (zoom if you will) is much more defined with the truck camera than the Infiniti. I can see raindrops falling through the truck camera and splitting the screen for camera view/gps is crazy as you can see the cracks in the street as you go by them at slower speeds. Obviously as long as you aren't prone to motion sickness.

QX56 Shocks

I have a Base 2011 QX56 with 21k miles on it. When I hit any type of bump in the road, offset in the pavement, etc. the backend feels like it skips to the side causing the whole SUV to swerve. I followed my wife driving it and when she hit an asphalt to concrete bridge transition, I saw the backend skip over about 6-inches. It's enough to make you have to over correct the steering. I've been scouring forums to figure out the issue. It's extremely noticeable and when I talk to people that have older QX56's they said they don't have the issue. The dealer hasn't been any help.

Anyone here have that problem?

Never felt that, has the car been in a rear end collision? I would stop driving it until you can check that rear suspension ASAP.

The car has not been in any accident. It was purchased new and has a clean car fax. I'm at 24k miles and the issue started at about 20k. It never drove like this before and it scares anyone that I allow to test drive it. The dealer is saying it's 'normal'. I can't believe anyone would say this is normal.

I called another Infiniti dealer (out of state) who told me to take it in to get the rear air ride suspension checked. Unfortunately, they are telling me they can't take a look at it until next Tuesday. Local dealer said they never checked that.

In the meantime, does anyone know if the air ride on the QX56 can be heard? If I turn on the car, open then the tailgate, and put two adults on the backend, I don't hear the air ridge compressor kick on. I have identified it's location... it's in the back left corner about 2' from the back bumper and looks like a black soup can. I hope this is the solution... and not that its 'just how the car handles' like the local dealer is telling me.

I have not heard it activate when re-leveling the suspension (from normal) however I have heard it when it would deflate (or return the suspension to normal) ie: when removing cargo or a full set of passengers.

It is quite loud and high pitched.

My guess is you passed gas  and used that as a cover story.;):D
