QX56 gas tank/fuel gauge

Other than this design oversight, my only other gripe is the engine vibration I experience between 1,500 and 2,000 RPM. The vibration begins in the floorboard and then radiates to the steering wheel as you move through those RPM's.

1500 to 2000 rpm is a really bad place to have a vibration. Have you taken your QX in for service yet?

On my most recent tank of gas, I drove 425 miles and filled up with 24.3 gallons.

glad to know I can stop sweating when the gauge is at "E"... sometimes i'm like.. shooot, just passed that gas station and the next one is 10miles away... then i start feeling the sweat beads dripping underneath my arm pits!! now, I know I have a few more miles, probably a solid 50-60!!

fuel issues in vehicles

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 05 G35 and both vehicles lie about how much gas is in the tank. All these instruments are controlled by computers using averages based on how the person drives. For instance on my GC, if I drive aggressively the full tank reads 336mi, if I drive nicely it says 432mi. When my G says 1/4 left I just fill it up regardless if its right or not.

Keep driving after you hit empty like I have on occasion.
I have filled up with 24.5 gals.

I have the same problem with my 2011 QX. Since I bought the SUV back in March I was only filling 19 gallons out of the 26. My dealership checked my car more than 4 times in regard to this issue and nothing changed. today I called Infiniti consumer affair and they also could not help me. Also, I have been having problem with my blind spots with this SUV. I have been driving QX since 2004 and never had a problem. However, the new body style is nice but I can't see my blind spot so well. Do not know what to do ::((

Problem Solved on 2011 QX56

After complaining all the way up the food chain at Infiniti I was essentially told this was a design issue. That was about 8 months ago. Every time I get an oil change I log another complaint and this week I was told there is a fix. They need my QX for two days. They will be replacing the instrument cluster so they report the miles and then order a gauge cluster with the correct miles indicated. It is supposed to completely address this fuel gauge accuracy problem. I'll report back after I get the work done, but I was pretty happy to hear the news.

rob good news and thanks for your diligence!

please post your results to the class once you get the time.

It always ticks me off when on my Yukon I drive to 0 miles remaining and can only put in 23 gallons. But in the end, it is probably a good thing because as I understand it, it's pretty hard on the fuel pump go all the way to close to empty (sediment issue or something). Haven't had the QX for more than a dozen hours so not sure how this one behaves on the fuel gauge.

Still an issue on 2012 models?

Are there any 2012 QX56 owners who can shed some light?

My wife and I are in the market for a new QX56 and right now could end up purchasing either a 2011 or 2012 model. This inaccurate fuel gauge is such an infuriating "feature" that I would gladly choose the 2012 if I knew the defect has been corrected.

For what it's worth, Infiniti certainly seems to have designed the gauge this way on purpose, which is just dumbfounding. I have a 2011 M37 which exhibits the same annoying feature--it drops from say, 40 miles remaining to **** remaining after driving a couple of miles. Even after driving 40 miles beyond the so called 40 miles remaining point, I still have 3 gallons remaining, which in my car translates to 60-75 miles more range. I could drive to and from work 2 or 3 more days before actually NEEDING gas!

I have learned over the last year I've owned the car to basically use the odometer as the gauge. By cautiously expanding the envelope, I now know I have over 1 gallon remaining even when the needle on the gauge is one full needle width BELOW the red. I.e., there's a needle's worth of black visible below the red and I've still got plenty of gas!

If the QX56 leaves 6 gallons unused, the effective range is just too low for me to consider buying the vehicle. My wife is never going to feel comfortable driving after the *** lights up, but I can guarantee she will complain mightily about having to buy gas constantly.

I think this fuel gauge issue is just another in a litany of simply amazing oversights by Nissan's engineers. My M37 was shipped with transmission and engine control software that was clearly in early beta form. The car would buck and almost die every time it was started from a full stop and made wild, high revving downshifts at random times. It was not a defect on my car--just poor software that took them almost a year to rectify.

Wondering if there is any news on the replacement instrument cluster and what was the outcome?

I have the same issue with my 2011 QX56. The most gas I've pumped was between 19-20 gallons with the instrumentation reading empty (red line), and the warning light going off on the instrument panel reflecting 30 miles left to empty.

im getting the same results on the 2012. the most i put in the tank from the "---" sign (needle was getting close to "o") was like 21 gals.. lol.

i see the same behavior.. needle drops kinda quick below full and hangs there for a while then moves to 1/2 and stays there longer.,, etc...etc...

Was this ever fixed?

Really? Are all vehicles affected or only a few qx56? I am considering buying one but this seems to be a major annoyance. Any workarounds.

ive not seen any work arounds. i filled up last night to the tip top and just after several miles the needle moved past full. on my armada (2008) i could go for a day or so with longer miles before the needle would move (with a full to the top tank).

indicator

It acts like is a software code issue, Like it checks after so many miles and flashes an indication.
Heck I would like to have a full tank of gas these days !! :D
It does get pretty good mileage, I cannot complain. I don't think I will be having the instrument cluster removed, I would think disassembling the dash could cause more issues than a lazy gas indicator gauge.
Heck I wish gas gauge was on the left side of the cluster, only vehicle I have with the gauge not on the left side.

Yes, I can also confirm the 2012 works exactly like the 2011. They have not made any attempt to fix it. This would clearly be a simple programming fix, but I believe Infiniti has done this on purpose to encourage drivers to fill up before the tank is low.

I just ignore the gas gauge now and fill up when the warning light comes on, even though I know I still have about 100 miles of range remaining... Just not worth it to me to track it manually.

yeah but isn't this a major annoyance that you loose 100 miles of range. Isn;t that around 20% or so?

I generally fill up once the warning signal winds down to --- miles left. At that point it takes about 22 gallons. With 4 gallons left or call it 60 miles, it isn't that big a deal. I would just say don't rush to fill up once the warning comes on.

It is annoying that the countdown starts at 60 miles or so and then suddenly around 40 miles it just drops to ---. I have to say it isn't a deal breaker but certainly a shortcoming vs any other vehicle I've owned.

It is really just a software logic thing that they have gone in a different direction on. Not unlike the hyperactive A/C, but that is another thread.

Yes, it's an annoyance. I would love for them to fix it, but looks like they're not. Since I drive past a couple of gas stations to and from work, it's just easier for me to stop and fill it up.
