QX56 gas tank/fuel gauge

I've wondered the same thing too, I have an '05 QX56 and I believe that the manual states 21 gallons, but I'm lucky if I can squeeze in 19.
Thats funny because mine does he same thing, only goes about 3/4 full on the fuel gauge..
try filling it when the engine is ON
Mine did the same too. If you fill it when the engine is ON or start the engine before closing the gas tank cap.

According to one of my friends, the G35's fuel tank is designed so that the gas pump will shut off roughly halfway while you're filling the tank. You're supposed to wait a few seconds then pump again and it'll fill up the rest of the tank. Something about the tank being divided so you have to fill each section separately.
I don't know if this is the same for the QX56, but if so it would explain why the gas pump shuts off partway through the filling.

fuel gauge
Had the fuel pump replaced and still reported incorrect readings for fuel gauge. The dash cluster was replaced recently and now the reading for fuel gauge are correct.
Not sure how this was supposed to be related to the fuel pump? But it's fixed now and that's all I care about.

Maybe this may help. Infiniti Has issued a recall of the fuel gauge/tank read out on the QX56. Take it to back to the dealership and they should correct the issue for free - See info below...

2011 Infinity QX56 fuel tank gauge is not accurate
2 months ago I bought 2011 Infinity QX56. The tank should take 26 gallons but I can only put 20. The computer warns me with 50 miles before empty, then it goes to around 35 and then just shows me ****. Even after getting **** I put another approximately 35 miles and it still took only 20 gallons.
As a result, since there is no way of knowing when you really going to run out of gas. I visit gas stations at much more frequent rate.
So what is the purpose of those 6 unaccounted gallons, I can understand if at least the computer would tell me that instead of showing me ****.
Anybody has similar problems with 2011 QX56? Dealer saying it is by design, but I strongly disagree.

2011 Fuel gage issues
I've had the same problem with my new QX. Run the tank to zero miles left and I can only stuff in 19 gallons. Dealer has been trying to help by replacing fuel pump with sending unit but it made no difference. I was curious to see if the tank just wasn't filling up so I filled it until it overflowed. It is not ok to have the guage on 0 and warning lights telling you to fill up yet there is still 6+ gallons left in the tank. My Lexus in the same situation will take 15.5 gallons in a 16 gallon tank. I'm due for an oil change so I will head back to dealer and see if I can get more attention. I've got an effective range of 220 miles!

This morning I went to another dealer, who was more responsive than the one I bought a car from. I made sure that before i went, my tank was about 40 miles to empty so I can show them. They refused to take a ride and initial reaction was that it is by design, but after talking to them for about 20 minutes and showing them the pictures from my camera they decided to make a few phone calls and investigate. Meanwhile while driving home (which is exactly 34 miles from this dealer) i decided not to fill the tank and do one more experiment.
So here what I found out:
1. at about 4178 miles on odometer the computer went from "34 miles to empty" to "____" (****)
2. I got home the odometer was showing 4211. That means I went w/o knowing how much gas I have for 33 miles. You would expect empty tank.
3. Filled up the tank - 21 gallons.

The service guy called me later, got all the information and said he will contact a headquater and speak with someone who can shed some lite on this.
I just have a strong feeling that the gauge needs some calibration or replacement. It should not show 0 (zero) when I have 5 more gallons.
Distance to empty - means EMPTY, not reserved as they telling me.
Another point, once u fill up the tank and start driving the car the gauge drops down very quickly, like i would say 3 miles away from gas station and it is already below FULL.
I will keep you posted, they said they will call back in a few days...

Yes, let me know what you find out, because my QX does exactly the same... including the gauge jumping off full almost immediately after refueling.
I think these are design flaws. It will be nice if they provide a fix.

The dealer called and said I have a good news and bad news.
The good news - you are not alone, there are others who are complaining about this problem and a bad news that this is how the car works and whoever he talked to (engineer) said that they cannot fixed it unless control software running the gauge is rewritten. For now (and I predict a recall for this issue soon) we would have to drive the car with 6-7 gallons of gas just being there as an extra carryon. One thing he mentioned which also made me nervous- is that if this car runs out of gas it would have to be towed to a dealler to be started again and that may be the reason for extra gallons to prevent it from ever happenning.

My 2011 with 5000 miles will only hold 20 gallon when the gauge and range indicator is zero. Dealer was "unresponsive" to the issue.

I just did my second fill up on new 2011 QX. This time, I let it go until it read BELOW the Red on the gauge and it was reading **** for several miles. It was 37 miles after the range read 50 by the trip odometer.
I could only get 21.5 gallons into it. (Out of 26 per the manual). This has to be the worst gas gauge ever!

I decided to try to go for 400 miles since 25 gallons x 16 mpg = 400 and that would leave me some leeway.
At 300 miles, the warning indicator came on. I kept driving to 400 and was able to put 23 gallons in the tank. That's 17.4 mpg.
At least the car's mpg calculation is accurate, but the gas gauge is terrible.
I decided to try to go for 400 miles since 25 gallons x 16 mpg = 400 and that would leave me some leeway.
At 300 miles, the warning indicator came on. I kept driving to 400 and was able to put 23 gallons in the tank. That's 17.4 mpg.
At least the car's mpg calculation is accurate, but the gas gauge is terrible.

Same problem here. After I bought the car I noticed that the gas gauge dropped very quickly, and I thought I was in for trouble with MPG. BUT at the pump I quickly realized that I was only putting in 19-20 gallons.
I run my QX to "E" which usually has the computer complaining all the way which is pretty annoying. When I reach "-----" I stop and fill up. If I stop filling when the pump handle clicks, the gas gauge needle sits perfectly on full. However I can pump another full gallon carefully into the tank, and then the needle reads above (beyond) full.
Not only does the gauge not register 6 gallons in the tank, the gauge movement from full to empty is not linear. Meaning it does not drop at a consistent rate. The first quarter tank is used in the first 50 miles. Then the second quarter is used in the following 75. Then it really slows down with about 100 miles per quarter thereafter. I am still not seeing 20 MPG on the highway. With 3,500 miles on the car, the best I can do is 16.5. And thats not trusting the computer, thats doing math.
Other than this design oversight, my only other gripe is the engine vibration I experience between 1,500 and 2,000 RPM. The vibration begins in the floorboard and then radiates to the steering wheel as you move through those RPM's.
