Need step-by-step instructions on playing DVD in front

I did the install today. Personally I'm glad I bought the $60 unit, cut two wires and saved $240 compared to the $300 prestigious model. Now that I've done this let me know if anybody needs help or has questions on this install.

I just installed a navigation bypass unit by Car Kit Company and it works great. This is a Remote unit which bypass the Parking brake and speed sensor to allow you to view video or rear camera at any time. And its a plug and play unit so no wire cutting needed. It is $175 so in the middle price range btw the Prestigious society module $300 and the $60 unit, but it comes with a remote control instead of a switch.

Thank you Marctronixx for pointing me to the NICO website to get the service manual on how to remove the console panels. I now know how to do it so if anyone need instructions, let me know.

Lmass123, I noticed the kit in the link is for the FX 2010+ models. Is that the one you got? It is compatible with the QX? Thanks

A couple of benefits of the kit over competition:
1) A remote to avoid have to mount any switches and it can be paired to Homelink buttons if you prefer that to a remote
2) It has a third bypass to allow the rear camera to be displayed without having to engage reverse

I am a little bummed this does not work for the 2006. any help, has anyone found a similar product for the 2006?:o
 
I think accessing the cameras while going over 7 MPH is possible to do without ordering the carkitcompany module.

Page 97 of AV.pdf shows the diagram of the AVMCU (around view monitor control unit [connector number M48]). Pin 6 is for VSS (vehicle speed signal), and my guess is that pin 7 (reverse signal) wouldn't need to be tampered with, since you can use the around view cameras while going forward at less than 7 MPH. I may be off here, but this wouldn't even require a switch; you just ground the wire coming from pin 6 of the AVMCU to disable the VSS from telling the module that it's going over 7 MPH. Anyone think this would work?

This looks interesting, but how hard / how much trim do you have to remove? I know when looking into the Coastal LockPick, it required a substantial amount of dash and console trim to be removed and I never felt confident enough to NOT snap or break something and that was on a much less expensive vehicle, not a QX!

Also, the item is not currently in stock. :(
 
The kind people over at carkitcompany informed me that more stock of the kit for the QX56 will be available to order tomorrow (5/9/2013) or Friday (5/10/2013). They also included the PDF files associated with the installation. They include an in depth/detailed step by step tutorial (with pictures) on how to get access to the back of the head unit. Although it's a tutorial for their kit, I'm sure the DIYers on here can benefit from it. And, (from the looks of it) now I think I can do this myself, instead of enlisting the assistance of marctronixx (like I had previously planned).

The more I look at the kit and it's features, the more I'm thinking of dropping the $175 (plus shipping) to get it. It has a little remote that can be synced with the QX's HomeLink buttons on the rear view mirror. That's pretty sweet if you ask me.

However, if I could find out a way to access the cameras while driving faster than 7 MPH, I would totally opt for the DIY route.

Well, I finally did this today, and it worked out great on the first try! It took me about 90 minutes. I opted to go the DIY (cheap) route, and couldn't be more pleased. I actually followed carkitcompany's PDF guide for removing all the panels and for gaining access to the back of the AV Control Unit.

I will say that it was scary never having done it before, but everything was fairly easy, except for removing the cables from the center console. Another thing that was mildly annoying was the 32 pin connector wires; they are very thin, and there's not a lot of slack, so I peeled back some of the cushiony sleeve to give me a little more wiggle room to operate. I'm confident I could do it again, however, soldering inside the tight confines of my wife's costly luxury SUV made me very anxious/nervous, but all went smoothly, and it works like a champ! No regrets here ;)

Don't waste your money on the costly plug and play "solutions"! If you know how to solder, follow directions and have some patience, this is worth doing yourself and saving the money. I used a $4 DPDT rocker switch from Rat Shack, some CAT6 Ethernet network wire (that I had lying around), electrical tape, a soldering iron, flux, some solder and the Harbor Freight yellow plastic pry tools. I also laid a towel down on the passenger seat (were I kept tools and soldering gear).

Thanks go out to marctronnix & others! Without their bravery, I would've never attempted this mod.

Anyone who needs help doing this and lives in the greater Los Angeles area can PM me and I'll be glad to assist you... if you bring a 12 pack of cold ones :D

appreciate your post though tone, and you solidify the fact that one does not need to spend 300+ bux on a fancy box that you will not ever see. one has to take apart the console to get back there so save yourself the cash and invest in the parts locally.
 
Tone... what was the total cost of your mod?

With the Car Kit ... will hitting the Home Link allow me to watch DVDs on the front screen??

Hey rough. The total cost was $3.99 (plus tax) for the rocker switch. I already had the pry tools, the soldering equipment and the CAT6 Ethernet cabling.

I didn't buy the plug and play setup from carkitcompany, so (unfortunately) the homelink buttons don't do anything (as far as the mod goes). I chose to not go that route because I wanted to see the front camera while in motion, and their setup only allows you to view the rear camera. I'm glad I saved my money and went the DIY route!

All you need to do is flip the rocker switch, and the parking brake signal and the vehicle speed signal are immediately bypassed, allowing for full use of the navigation, video on front display and phone dialer access.

Note: I didn't tap into any other wires for grounding. I simply grounded to the top left AV Control Unit mounting screw. Easy, breezy, beautiful! :D

I have been reading a lot and cant find the answer to a couple questions. First will the kit from carkit.com for the q56 2011+ work on an 2012 Armada with navigation. Also I think I know the anwser but want to confirm, will splicing the wires for this void the warrenty on the nav unit? Thanks in advance for your answers.
 
The QX kit will NOT work. There pinout is different. On an Armada, the wires you need are #82 & #80. On a QX it's #82 (VSS) & #65 (PBS).

Splicing the wires will NOT void the warranty, unless an issue that needs repair is attributed to your mod. However, it would be quite difficult to mess anything up, as long as you make sure that you cut the correct wires and wire them correctly to the switch.
