Just took delivery - truck surging +\- 150 RPM???

Surging Transmission at low RPM

I'm having a similar symptom with my 2011 QX56, but it only does this at a very low RPM moving between 10 - 15 mph. I haven't taken it to the dealer but was concerned that it could be a symptom of a larger problem. I've only noticed the surging recently and I have 84,000 miles on the truck.

However, 80% of my driving is at high highway speeds where the truck performs like a dream. I've come to believe that the surging is probably from my lack of sustained driving at a speed between 10 - 15 mph. Yes I can make the transmission surge if I maintain that very low RPM, but it doesn't seem all that worrisome to me because I don't think the truck was made to drive between 10 - 15 mph for a sustained period.

Just my two cents

Has anyone had any resolution to their problem? My 2011 QX56 Tech just started this as well...dealer told me a bunch of BS about the torque converter lock up and that I had all the latest updates to my ECM. At first I was wondering if it was a problem with the ones with the tech package. I have a 2011 M37 Tech as well and when I drove it I didn't notice any of those shifting issues. Both have about 57k on them. After this I told the service manager that the M37 didnt have those "normal" shifting issues. So every oil change i will continue to tell them of this issue until something is done. Ive never had a transmission shift like this so this normal stuff is BS. Even my 99TL on its 3rd transmisson never shifted like this. At WOT is shifts fine but normal traffic acceleration it surges.

Found the solution! Got rid of the Infiniti after only about 5 months of ownership.

Got to tell ya, fellas, this truck / brand / organization is not all it's cracked up to be. Simply put, the value is not there. Nor the luxury. Nor the quality. First and last Infiniti. Got the wife back into a Ford. Couldn't be happier.

Thanks for the input guys / gals.

and thank you...

Ford? Happy? Oxymoron....lol

But anyway...good luck with your new vehicle!

a FORD??? lololol not for me, but whatever grabs ya I guess. I can name plenty of reasons not to own anything from the Blue Oval (from years of experience) but some people just don't care and will buy it anyway...

Lucky you. My wife won't ever go back into any domestic product until an earth shattering change occurs or the price drops respective of the sh*t they continue to push out the end of the factory.

a ford , for god sake...

Hey All, 2011 QX56 Newb here. Has anyone found the real solution to this issue? I took mine as soon as possible to the dealer. It has the surging. My wife is almost ready to trade this in on something else.

What did the dealer say? Are you talking about the surging when moving slow or right after the gears change? Need more info to help you...

Same exact problem

Same qx56 as in my other posts. 88K on the odometer, and it has started infrequently shuddering / tach fluttering at low speeds. It's my wife's daily driver, so I'm not in it that much, but I can guarantee that if she notices it, it must be happening relatively frequently. Again, anyone have any idea what is causing this / a solution to the issue?

what year is you car? what trim options?

did you purchase new?
check for any DTCs at the obd port?

need some info before anyone can offer help over the internet.

things to check:

faulty petrol pump/filter

low petrol pressure

IPDM (rare but possible--depends on model of car)

fouled plugs? poor coil packs

etc etc etc.....

Like an idiot, I forgot to respond.... here you go

what year is you car? 2011

what trim options? All of them (seriously Touring, tech and theater)

did you purchase new? No, used with 74k on the clock

check for any DTCs at the obd port? did, and nothing presented.

Infinity did update and reset the ECU, and the problem got slightly better for about a week. Now we're back to square one. CarMax Warranty, so they took the beast to AAMCO to have the transmission looked at, but I'd love to be able to come back and say "hey, look at this potential problem" in case they don't have a good answer.

Also, we always run either 91 or 93 octane in the tank, and always "guaranteed gas" from typically QuikTrip (at least for the last 12k miles). High pressure fuel pump was replaced at 76k miles.

My take on the shuddering as I have experienced it in our QX56 as well
The tune on isnt spot on from Nissan/Infiniti
Depends on how much gas you give the car
Drive it light and easy like a normal person mother etc it will shudder probably
The car wants to shift to early and it lugs in a higher gear which will chatter
Our 09 MDX did this as well so I drove it in manual mode alot
Which in turn I also do in the QX alot too but if you drive just abit more aggressive...not like whole lot the car wont shudder
Maybe further on down in say 12-13-14-15....maybe 16 they got the tune pretty matched up the line pressure for the solenoids etc and maybe they can get it to shift well
Toyota/Lexus got it with the 7spds in the LS460 back in the early days....Nissan/Infiniti just needs to get the whole tune set up good on the trans side

just my my two cents

Yeah, I'm really hoping this isn't the actual answer, but the more research that I'm doing, the more I'm starting to think that this might just be a "thing" that happens with these trucks. AAMCO has told us "there's definitely a problem" but when they took the pan off the tranny, they said it was also "one of the cleanest transmissions they'd ever seen on a car with 91k miles". I'll keep everyone posted as I get more info....

My '11 qx does the same. I have brought it to Infiniti many times with no success. It does only happen when driving slow or what I call normal, the shifts at times seem like it's either skipping a gear or looking for one. I noticed this alooot more when I had the BORLA exhaust on it and could hear the tone of the exhaust. BUT if I drive with a little bit of a heavier foot thank shifting is smooth and perfect...its wierd but irritating.

if you are having shifting concerns then you should let the ecm relearn your driving habits.

yes it hunts because the tranny/TCM/ECM has LEARNED your driving habits and its trying to find the best gear for the current drive. sometimes its hit or miss and if it gets to be annoying, you can clear the memory.

clearing this history in the ECM will make the car run like it stole something.. :D

i do it often and yes i have experienced that as well.

Personally i think in their quest for fuel economy (to be 1mpg better than the competition) they have the car biased to shift too soon. What i experience is basically what happens in a manual if you are at too low RPM for your current gear. I've cleared ECM, taken to dealer 2x, had fuel pump replaced, run bg 44k through it, etc. Nothing helps. If we could reprogram the shift points this would go away. Can't be good for the tranny in the long run.

So I had a 2012 QX that I bought new and traded it for a 2016 at 72,000 miles. I never had this surging issue with the '12 but I have it on the '16. I have less than 1000 miles on it so far and I just figured the ECM needed to learn and that it would go away. We will see how it works out. It seems the torque converter is locking and unlocking right at the cusp of weather it should or not. Make sense? I'm glad I saw this thread so as not to waste time sending it if for service.

No car is perfect. To me even with all of its flaws, it's still the best large SUV on the market. Almost bought a Yukon Denali but after two test drives, I couldn't go back to another GM product. So where does that leave you?

So AAMCO just got back to us, and apparently, they're saying that the results of a backflow test show that the left cat is apparently "not flowing as well as it should be", and they want to replace the cat on that side. Keep in mind that this is all while I'm not getting any DTC's on the ECU at all. I'm thinking that AAMCO is trying to point to anything instead of just saying "yeah, we don't know what this is". Looks like this is just something that we're going to have to deal with.

Thoughts?

Cat replaced. Surging / Shuddering has stopped. Now it's just a waiting game until the passenger sides goes. ::sigh::
