cruise control qx56 2010

Long story short: the cruise control does not work on our qx56. The switch attached to the brake pedal was replaced and the cruise control worked one time before it went out again. Now I am told that it needs a new module, not exactly sure what the module does, that costs $2300 for the part alone. That seems crazy.
Two used modules were attempted to be used and the report was that they couldn't be programmed for this vehicle.
Just not sure what to do at this point. The vehicle drives well, but not having cruise control is sure a nuisance.

are you mechanically inclined to diagnose the car?

are you getting any trouble codes? check the obd port?

do you have any error lamps that come on when you try to set cruise?

since your car is out of production, it may be a challenge to find someone to program the parts for your specific trim.

did you buy the car used? or have you had it since day one?

was the cruise issue intermittent or did it just fail all at once?

what is the mileage? any other electrical issues with the car?

there are a few items that can cause issues with cruise -

BCM
TCM
faulty wiring harness/lack of continuity
individual sensors
cruise module

what part number did the shop tell you was the part that needs replacing? are you dealing with nissan or a 3rd party?

Bought the vehicle used with about 165,000 on it. Fellow I bought it from buys cars from dealerships. So, no history. I was told that the car had been being used as the family vehicle prior to me purchasing it.
The seller is a good guy. He has taken on fixing the airconditioning(replaced the radiator) and a problem with the hatch window latch. He has said he would take care of the cruise control issue as well. His mechanic installed the switch that is actuated by the brake pedal. That was the first step. The cruise control worked at least once after that switch was replaced and then quit. His mechanic could not get it working again, I think he replaced the cruise control module(if there is one) and when that didn't work they took it to the local Nissan dealership where it has been for 2 1/2 weeks. The story I heard is that they called in a specialist after they couldn't get the cruise control working and declared it needed another module(possibly an ABS module?). The seller purchased such module, used, 2 different times now, and each time the report from the service guy at Nissan said they couldn't get it programmed. Both units had been tested prior to being shipped(so we are told) and found to be working.
The Nissan service rep keeps saying that the car needs a new module that costs $2,500, in order to work.
I just spoke to the seller who told me he ordered a new module that is supposed to arrive Monday. He is frustrated of course and I am too. The seller has loaned me a vehicle to drive the entire time my car has been at the Nissan dealership.

I thank you for your reply. I had conversations with you before about this vehicle, probably two months ago. You have been very thorough and prompt.

To answer another part of your reply, no, no error lamps come on when I try to set cruise, it simply does not go into cruise and the light that would indicate that it is in cruise mode does not come on. The light that indicates the button to start that sequence does come on, but that is all.

thank you for your input and backstory. its possible the used parts were faulty -- ive seen people over the years order non oem parts and those didn't work, so even though these are used oem parts , they can still be faulty, so hopefully this new part will do the trick.

did your mechanic friend check the obd port for any codes? if there are NO codes with respect to the tranny or ecm, it may simply be a bad cruise module, sensor, and/or a fault in the wire harness. those are the more difficult things to diagnose when there are no trouble codes, but with patience and time one can figure it out.

An update: new part ordered and delivered. In installing the part there were difficulties, extent and exact nature not known, with the result that the conclusion was that there are additional issues with the vehicle in using the cruise control. Not even sure if the cruise control works at this point. Some discussion about speed sensors in the wheels, this was not accepted by the seller who stated that the wheel sensors had already been checked and found good. Net result, the seller is going to recover the vehicle and take it to a different Nissan dealership for diagnosis.

Seller is upset as the Nissan dealership that had the Infiniti wants $1,500 for the work they performed(remember the cruise control is reportedly not working) before they will release the vehicle.

The vehicle was in the shop since before Thanksgiving. I told the seller that if the new dealership cannot fix the issue within a week that I need to discuss with him trading the vehicle in on a different vehicle. He said he understood.

Not sure what to expect if I do trade it in, how much the seller will consider it worth, etc....

Just a follow up from where this has gone since I last posted. As of this am the Infiniti was still at the Nissan dealership. The seller told me he hasn't had time to go and get it. I did ask for it to be brought back to me.
I talked with the service rep at the Nissan dealership today. He said he was told by Nissan tech assistance that the serial number on the transmission doesn't match with what it should be.....this suggests that someone had trouble with the original transmission, had it replaced and whoever replaced it did it with one that is similar, that ran okay for awhile, but it is now creating issues.
This is just too much for me to deal with. The seller is seeming to agree to buy back the vehicle for what we owe on it and intends to find the right vehicle for us to purchase as a replacement....hope it all works out.

Posting this message in January 2023. Our 2010 Infiniti QX56 had the same issue with the expensive quote to replace back in 2020. Being a do-it-yourselfer I went to ebay and ordered the front radar that came complete with mounting bracket. My thinking was by getting the complete unit I shouldn't have to do any adjusting. It made the process plug and play and our radar and cruise control is now working again. Mine cost about $100 with a date code of 2014 on it. Just for giggles I opened up the old radar and saw that it had water inside and lots of corrosion. I sealed the new unit heavily to prevent water entering.
