2011 qx56 misfire

Good morning,
Would sincerely appreciate any help I can get. Here's the situation. Have had a 2011 Infiniti QX 56 at our shop for quite some time. Upon of first inspection of the vehicle, it had a random misfire code and a specific misfire code for cylinder #3. That did not correct the issue. Vehicle was sent down to the dealer to be further diagnosed. They sent papers stating that check engine light is on, runs rough, and hesitates. As well as number 1 cylinder is weak and faults for the front bank o2 sensor.
We are at a complete loss as to where to go from here. Replaced both cylinder 1 and 3 coils, test drive, and the test drive must be an extensive one, and the exact same codes keep coming back.
As stated above, any and all help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Was the timing chain recall performed? Maybe the timing was installed a half tick off? That's what happened to me. The dealer had to redo the whole thing after they figured it out about 300 miles later!

I would also suggest why not do a full tune up? Change all 8 ignition coils. It would be expensive for the customer, but that is expected for the cost of these things for this huge car. And remember 4 of them are longer than the other 4. Get OEM or you will be wasting your time with aftermarket coils. Believe me here.

And if you change the ignition coils, make sure you go ahead and change spark plugs.

So this will be an expensive service for the client.

I have changed 2 coils on my 2012 QX56, but it did not really need it. I kind of made my extended warranty to pay for it.

I have a 2008 Maxima that I replaced all 6 ignition coils with aftermarket about 3 months ago. A month ago my car would misfire bad. I could not stand it. it threw like 6 different codes. Engine misfire, catalytic converter, oxygen sensor and transmission misfire.

I went and bought OEM spark plugs and OEM ignition coils. Had a friend do this. And then I bought transmission fluid and changed it myself. Car drives now like a champ! I reset all lights and about 1,000 miles of driving now, no lights back on yet.

Not all 11-13 QX56's Have Timing Chain Issues??

I am interested in purchasing a pre-owned QX56/80 and have read through most of the threads that touch on the timing chain and catalytic converter issues that plagued the 11-13 QX56.

I was wondering when Infiniti started to install the upgraded timing chain and cats on new vehicles? Was it only the 2014+ model years that should be relatively trouble free in these areas?

I have looked up the VIN on the infiniti recall site for a number of 2012 vehicles and none of them have been flagged for the recall.

Thank you for your help as this forum is a great resource!

if the vin you are looking to purchase is not on the site for the recall then its OK. there's even some 2011 models that did not get flagged.

i think around 2013 was when the updated equipment was put in.

Thank you very much for the reply and the info! I appreciate it.

Interestingly I heard back from the dealer today on one of the 2012 QX56’s for sale that was not flagged in the recall but had the timing chain and cats replaced at the dealer at 105,000km (roughly 63k miles). Unfortunately the dealer said the client had to pay out of pocket since the vehicle was not part of the recall.

Might be looking like a 2014 is a better deal at only about $8-10k more?

timming chain question

if the dealers replaced the timming chain on the recall do you have to have this done agin if the future

timing chains are designed to last for many any years and many many miles.

the first run vehicles did not necessarily have faulty timing chains, rather the oil jets were sub par and caused the chains to not be lubed as they should, shortening their life and causing other issues downstream.

while no car is going to last forever, this recall will eliminate the issues caused by the sub par parts.

Hey guys, it's me, the thread starter. :)

I gotta say, it was a pleasant surprise to come back and see this thread has been useful for so many. (although not pleasant to know the timing chain problem plagued so many QX's.)

I'm about to trade in the '11 qx56 that I originally started this thread about. My how time flies.

Thinking of trading in for a 2016 QX80. Anything on those I should be leery of?

I had a 15 with no issues. We’ve got an 18 now we traded for in July. No issues with it either.

2012 with 101,000 miles.

No codes, unfortunately.

Dealer diagnosed it to be the timing chain problem.

I sent you a pm about the special tool, but do you know of one that is available to buy or rent?

Thanks

EDIT: UPDATE:

I now own the tool for removing and installing the oil jet. If anyone decides to do this, it's available.
Where did you get the tool J51269 for the oil jet removal. prosper19@gmail.com

Hi everyone - Just a reminder that I still have the oil jet tools if anyone needs to borrow them

CBlake,

Thanks for the offer of use of the oil jet tool...
I actually replaced pretty much everything after opening the timing cover.....
I replaced the following:

Bank 2 Oil Jet - part# 13081-AR000
$ 14.74 (InfinitiPartsDeal.com)
The oil jet has a couple of Verrrry tiny holes on it that allow oil to be directed to the timing chain and upon inspection, were clogged, thus preventing oil to the chain. Replaced for less than $ 15

High pressure pump camshaft assy-
Infiniti part# 13020-5ZM0E
$ 298.87 (InfinitiPartsDeal.com)

Timing cover filter assy
Infiniti part# 15200-EY00A
$ 93.18 (Southwest Houston Infiniti)

Timing chain guide (broken "bucket" fragments broke (1) guide
Infiniti part# 13085-1LA2A
Clear Lake (Houston) Infiniti
$ 28.79

Oil Jet Removal and Install tools
Jig-Oil Timing Infiniti Part# 13081-1LA0B
$ 100.00 total to remove oil jet
Infiniti PartsDeal.com

I also replaced all of the O-rings for the timing cover (I think a total of 6 or 7) total cost from Infiniti $ 200.00 (they were in stock and readily available...if I had to do it again I would have ordered from InfinitiPartsDeal.com and waited the 2-3 days to receive them as it would have been less than $ 50

Unfortunately my timing cover was damaged at the top portion where the high pressure pump mounts. The broken lifter-valve "bucket" fragments gouged the inner walls where the "bucket" rides, therefore creating excessive wear on the bucket. I was able to find a used timing cover in Canada "Doug's Auto Parts gor $ 139.36 USD..... waiting 7 days to receive....better than the $ 700 plus new from Infiniti.

With your situation for labor costs and amount of damage and possible additional damage if I were in your situation I would simply replace engine for $ 4k..... check Car-Part.com for engine prices or eBay....Call Danny at Nissan Unlimited in Houston, (832) 467-4400, ask for Danny or William, he is great to work with as he has provided me with good parts and prices for years for my Q45, M45, Qx56 and now my M56.

I installed everything.... replaced starter since I already had intake off....she has been running strong since reassembly.
I also added a Custom Tune with my Bullydog Gt Tuner....I will be taking her to the track tomorrow night.

I'm sure you're confusing me with someone else. I offered you the tool, but you didn't take me up on it. I replaced my jets, chains, guides, etc myself years ago before the recall came out.

CBlake,

Yes, I remember you offered to ship the oil jet tool to me....I was commenting that I really appreciate your offer.....my buddy that actually set the timing for me had the tool and took care of that portion for me.....but, I really do appreciate your offer....not many people offer to help these days..... Thanks Very Much ..... also don't forget my offer to you for the Tuner.

It's all good. Thank you, too, for the offer.

I thought you were referring to me when you said this...

@CBlake can you possibly lend the tool to me? I can’t find it anywhere else abs my dealership doesn’t sell it or wants to rent it out with a deposit.

Hi, we have experience this problem in 2022. Do you still have the tool? If so please email me jason.johnson08@yahoo.com I would like to buy it.

I have a 2011 QX56. At 115K miles I heard a constant ticking sound under the hood. I took it to the dealer who said I needed a new engine at $17K. Something about bearings bouncing around somewhere? I got a second opinion, they said it was a loose timing chain (bad tensioner), caused all kinds of other damage, and repairs were $5,800. Of course Infiniti wouldn’t do anything about it. But could the timing chain issue cause an engine issue? Do I need to sell this thing while it’s still running?
