QX reliability (potential new users thread)

I've been on the market for a 3rd vehicle. Trying to stay around 20K. Really like the QX56, but I've been reading about all the issues with timing chain and catalytic converter. Am I better off looking at another brand than infiniti? I don't want to buy a 20K vehicle and have a check engine light and a 3 to 5K repair bill within a year. Reading through this forum has just about scared me away from buying the QX56. I was supposed to go look at a couple tomorrow. One with 100,000 miles and the other 126,000 miles. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I was about to buy a 2011 QX56 with 104,000 miles tomorrow, but now I'm having second thoughts after reading the forum. Can anyone tell me if the timing chain and catalytic convertor are really common problems or if most of these QX56 are reliable vehicles. I was also looking at similar Toyota Sequoias. Not sure what to do.

Another question. Would you recommend a specific extended warranty that would cover most of those problems I mentioned?

Would a 2014 or newer QX80 be any more reliable than the QX56?

hi,

a used car is only as good as the previous owner(s). this applies to any car.

nearly every car has forums where people have issues with it. this is the way with mass produced vehicles.

im sure youve had older cars that also has some reliably concerns. the qx is no different.

is the qx reliable? yes! i'm an owner of a 2012. had it since it was born. never had any issues with it. EVER. and i drove it like a rental!

the timing chain debacle should be done on all affected vehicles by now. my car was one on the recall list. i never had any issues but got it done anyway.

sound advice for ANY car is to have a trusted mechanic smoke it over. buy a CPO from infiniti or if 3rd party, get the maintenance records.

there are thousands of happy qx owners who may never get on a forum to boast how great their car is, so it's understandable when people go on a specific car enthusiasts site and reads about issues.

at the end of the day, its up to you and your money. if you feel better with toyota, then go that way.

Awesome! Thanks for the helpful information! I fell in love with the size and style of the QX56 and X80, interior and exterior. I have a couple really good prospects. Both are 2 owner vehicles and Carfax shows pretty good service history on both. We will see!

These trucks will last, Ive previously owned a 2005 QX56 and got up to I think it was slightly over 170k miles with no check engine light or any major issues with it and just upgraded to something newer. Right now I’m driving a 16 QX80 limited and I’ve already clocked over 100k miles on it a couple weeks ago from a road trip.

Hey all, I am really considering buying a QX56. What I really want to know is what are the common problems that comes across a QX56 from 2012. I am about to go see a few QX56 in a few days. What type of questions should I ask the owners and the dealerships.

from the common issues so from what I have seen is the timing chain issue which i see had a recall and possibly catalytic converter issues ?

hello. this thread has some useful tips hopefully , but i will also lend my own experience with having a 2012 (bought brand new).

the car is solid. ive a 2012 fully loaded and never had any issues with the car 96k miles later. really. the end.

of course a car is only as good as its previous owner(s) so make sure you see if the car has maintenance records. smoke over the carfax report. take the VIN to a infiniti dealer and have them enter the vin to see if any recalls are outstanding.

the timing chain issue was the biggest concern. that affected the cats downstream as well as the o2 sensors on car that had damage as a result of the timing chain debacle. whilst my vin was in the list of vins to et the recall i never had any issues prior to the recall (or since).

cant think of any other UNIQUE issues to the qx. so besides the timing chain and recall/tsb's if any exist, just smoke over the car as you would any other SUV form any other manufacturer. if you've a reliable tech who can smoke over the car all the better.

Can't afford the lower mileage QX80s. I have my eye on one that has 92K miles on it. Can I get another 5 years out of it with average (15K/yr) miles without major repairs? I can handle brake pads/rotors, sensors, things like that, but any non-maintenance repairs over $1,000 I should expect prior to 175K miles based on your experience? What about beyond that?

So I am in the market to get a used 2011-2013, possibly 14-15 depending on price. I have been doing all kinds of research on which packages I need to get for what options I want, but the most glaring thing I read most of anywhere on these is the reliability being horrible and repairs being astronomical. I get it is a luxury vehicle and high repair bills will come, but from what I have read the timing chain and cats are the two top issues with these vehicles, from almost all years, but primarily the years I am looking at. Is the majority of people having these issues just a subset of owners or is it more widespread than that? I just want to make sure going in I am prepared for crap to break or look elsewhere for a massive SUV. Looking for a reliable family SUV, but I love the tech and luxury Infiniti brings. Thanks.
