Hello, I'm looking at a '13 QX56 at a great price, but it has 104k miles. Both USAA and the dealer offer warranties, between $1500 and $1900, both only for 12k miles. Given those numbers, I feel that it may be wiser just to keep my $2000 and set it aside for any problems that may arise. The vehicle has all records and seems to be in excellent condition. I'm planning to pick it up later today or early tomorrow. Any advice?

When I bought my QX56 I was offered a service agreement for about $2,000, but turn it down after I read the what it actually covered, which wasn't much. The warranty was for about 5 years or 136,000 which ever came first. I say save your money and before you take delivery of the truck make sure all the recalls are done.

That's a nice SUV you're looking at. If you go through with the purchase let us know. Have any pictures of it yet?

It's only my non-professional opinion but I think this is good advice. Save the money for future repairs if and when they're needed...

Yes, I'll definitely be checking back in if I buy it. Did any of you come from a truck to this vehicle?

My hesitation in buying it is going from a 2016 2wd Tundra Crewmax w/13k miles to this vehicle with 4wd and 100k miles.

Here's a picture of my truck and a QX56 similar to the one I'm thinking about buying.

Both very nice vehicles. I've never owned a truck before... Boy, that's a tough choice. I mean - the QX56 is in another world luxury-wise - but that Tundra is brand new...

Please check with your local infiniti dealer on the tsb/recall on the timing chains and also look closely at your cats/manifolds.

Here's my two cents. We purchased a 2011 fully loaded QX with an extended MaxCare warranty from Carmax. We currently have 101,xxx on it and here's what we've had done:

Under Warranty (so $150 deductible):
  • High Pressure Fuel Pump
  • Battery
  • Timing Chain (done before the recall)

Not Covered by Warranty:
  • Both catalytic converter / manifolds.

All in all, the warranty has probably saved us 50% of what we could have potentially paid to fix out of warranty. If i could do it all again.... i'd buy a Sequoia :p

I have both and while they are each different in their own ways, if I were to pick and keep one, I'd stick with the Tundra due to their reliability. My Tundra has never given me any issue and it's a heck of alot more fun. The QX has had both cats replaced under warranty and the timing chain failure out of pocket (later reimbursed under recall). At one point, the blinker just came on by itself without moving the lever. (??) Bluetooth is spotty with my phone. I get around ~11 MPG with the QX while I get ~13 with the 5.7 Tundra. The only time I take the QX would be to haul 6/7 people. I wouldn't say I have buyer's remorse with the QX but if I were to go back, I'd probably would have been happier buying an Acura or Lexus SUV.

Thanks for the replies. That was my dilemma - the QX had a lot of great additional luxuries, but I know that the Tundra will be a reliable vehicle. I think my best bet is to keep the Tundra and maybe add something here and there to make it a bit more luxurious on the inside. I'm really only missing the Nav and leather and I could add those easy enough, I guess. I also hope to be moving in the next couple of months, and in my mind the Tundra would be much more useful with that.

Legit, look into adding a small android tablet to your tundra. Should give you a ton of additional "tech" features, is a relatively cheap modification, and doesn't have to be done in a "permanent" way that would otherwise damage your resale value. As for leather.... meh. It's really only better if you've got a need for a surface that wipes clean when muddy, and it comes with it's own set of maintenance issues. Good Luck!

Tablet, interesting, I'll definitely check that out. Thanks.

The dealership ended up giving me a deal that I couldn't refuse, so I made the trade. I'll post a pic later. One question - should you be able to see the album art when streaming bluetooth from an iphone and using apple music?

Congrats on your purchase. But wow. that was a tough decision to make.

2016 Tundra vs 2013 QX with over 100K miles on it. Most people would not do the trade, but only you know what you want and are paying for it, so good decision on your part.

But please, try to get a warranty which will actually cover stuffs.

When I bought my QX, my credit union offered me warranty through a warranty company. I said not interested. They said, well you have one week to decide. i said that is too much time for a decision I have already made: no, thank you.

3 days down the road my driver side dvd headrest stops playing. Wow! I called my credit union and asked them if I could pay for that warranty, they said sure. I have 4 more days before it expires. I sent my payment. But my warranty had a clause that said only after 3 months and or 1,000 miles which ever comes first can I file a claim. My dedcutible is $100.

It has been about 10 months of me owning my car and now about 20,000 miles, my warranty has paid over $10,000 in repairs on my QX. And mind you, I still have 4 more year or about 45,000 miles left before my warranty runs out. My warranty is bumper to bumper. Covers everything that I can think of.

Feel free to click on the links below to read the problems I had on my QX that warranty fixed for me...

Thanks, I'll take a look at those links. I've considered the warranty and still have a couple of days to decide, but it seems that $2000 will go a long way in repairs for what these vehicles have issues with.

Yes, they gave me a few days to consider warranty.

I don't know if you have looked at this car very much. It is a massive computer. Any repairs there is in the thousands.

If you have not clicked on my links above, let me just throw some numbers at you...

I broke my 2 lower controls arms offroading the heck out of my QX in the San Juan hills in Colorado. Cost about $4,000 or so to replace.

Warranty refused to install those without new front shocks. Warranty said I must cover the front shocks and springs, since they are wear and tear items and not covered by warranty. I paid about $1,400 out of pocket for those.

My dvd headrest went out. Warranty paid all $2,400 for it.

My rear camera went out. Warranty paid all $1,200 for it.

My transmission module control system went out. Warranty paid all $2,300 for it.

My warranty has already paid over $10,000 in repairs. And that is over 3 times what i paid for my warranty.

I have a 2012 QX56 with currently 98,500 miles on it as of today.

My warranty is still valid for the next 4 years or 45,000 miles. If I tell you that I do not want my QX again to get bad, I would be telling you a lie. A lot of people pay for warranties and before they use it, their warranties are expired and then they get very upset. As much as I hate the fact that my car has been to the dealership for such serious problems, I honestly do not mind my QX getting bad, as long as I am covered under warranty for repairs, :).

And before my warranty expires in the next 4 years or 45,000 miles, I hope my QX gets bad multiple times and all those problems hopefully be covered under warranty. I never in my life thought I would wish that on a car, but I do on my car.

Here is my QX after my offroading road trip and the day i picked it up from the dealership after all repairs done.

I decided to go ahead with the warranty. I found one for 3yr/36k and I bought the version with the most coverage for $2900. I think the company was called CNA.

Ok, so how do you adjust the headlight sensitivity for when the lights come ON. I have the stalk set to AUTO and as soon as the vehicle cranks (even in midday) the headlights and fogs come on. I've moved the one sensitivity entry in settings to both extremes and it doesn't make a difference - any ideas?

Just found the answer - in my case, it's because I had the fog light switch set to on:
