New Owner First Post

Hey All,

I just picked up a very clean 12 QX for my wife yesterday. She came out of an 13 Grand Cherokee V8 and couldn't be happier with the QX... it's one owner with 48k, theatre package and 22's.. I was looking for info on swapping to 20's on the site and came across the recall post for the timing chain.

I ran the VIN info and ours is on the list, so I'll be taking her up to Spokane WA for the work.. It's about 2.5/3hrs from here and was the original selling dealer. Is everyone getting a loaner during the service? Really dont want to take two vehicles up or pay for a rental..

Thanks
.

You should be able to get a loaner. Still under factory warranty and getting a major recall item done. Call and schedule with dealer. If they need some incentive, remind them you're a new Infiniti owner looking to establish a long-term relationships with a dealership.

Hi Titan. I'm getting ready to buy an '11 with 20's but prefer 22's. Were you looking to trade for 20's?

2011 QX56 - Catalytic Converter

I have a 2011 QX56 with 98,000 miles...I just had my timing chain replaced at 91,000 and now they are telling me I need to replace both catalytic converters because my check engine light came on and the two codes P0420 and P0430. Has anyone else experienced replacing catalytic converters with less than 100k on it? Could those codes be false? What else what trigger those codes?

Please help!

Yes. This is a common problem and should be covered with the recall.

I thought that the catalytic converters were not included in the recall. I hope that I am wrong because i have a P0430 and i am at 106xxx miles.

my timing chain failed and was replaced out of pocket but later reimbursed per the recall. I was told to pound sand by Infiniti on the catalytic converters and had to pay a ridiculous amount out of pocket.

Here's the cat converter thread:

http://infinitiforum.net/infiniti-forum/showthread.php?t=13616

They are not included in the timing chain recall, but i wish they were because it's a very common problem. The cat converters are welded onto the engine manifolds, making it a very expensive part and an intense amount of labor. There are several muffler shops in my town that will weld off the old cats and weld new ones in place. Cost is a little over $1K vs $3500+ to have the dealer replace the parts.

Replacement Parts

All.
I'm probably one of the QX56 owners that's less enthusiastic about owning one than some others, so take my recommendations with a grain of salt. We purchased the QX to tow an RV, and later got rid of the RV due to not having enough time to use it. We've been through the timing chain replacement (thanks MaxCare), and have had to replace both of the cats out of warranty (damn MaxCare). Since I've been responsible for paying for both of those cats, I was more interested in cost than longevity, since I'm not going to be keeping this truck after the warranty runs out (currently in 45k miles). ALL THAT BEING SAID... we found non-infiniti replacement Cats over at Rock Auto. They're made by a company called Davico, and according to my garage, they're a perfect direct factory replacement. They have a 50K warranty, and so far, have been doing what they're supposed to do. I have no idea how long that will continue to be the case, but if I can spend $400 on a part instead of $850, I'm ok with making that choice. YMMV, but I wanted to make everyone aware.
Good luck,

Infiniti has major mark up on everything they do. I purchased the extended warranty after 4 years and hope it will cover all issues .

So I had the recall done at 78K miles....My truck now has 197k on the odometer. Started that weird noise a few days ago.....Taking to the dealer on Friday. Hoping it's not the timing chain again.

If I'm not mistaken, the recall wasn't announced until May 2016...You put 120,000 miles on your car in less than a year?!?! Clearly I'm misunderstanding something.

Official recall was announced well after my truck was repaired. My truck sat at the dealer for 4 months while they were trying to figure out what was wrong with it. It was one of the first trucks repaired according to my dealer. I first bought the truck in September 2010 as a 2011 model. Hopefully that clarifies things. I put 30k on my truck a year.

Wow. You already have 197K on odometer? Well, you are definitely one of the few getting your money's worth.

I mean, people are paying $60K to $80K for this vehicle. The least it can do is stay reliable for atleast 200,000 miles on odometer.

Lol, I would love to see your odometer.

So dealer calls me and confirms that the timing chain is the issue again. Waiting to see what they can come up with. They will be contacting Infiniti corporate. Stay tuned.........

Can anybody detail what the root cause is for the timing chain issue? Is it a design flaw in the engine?

The truck is driving flawless. It's a shame if I need to get rid of it.
