Two weeks in and about 450 miles on the car, almost all around town driving. Please tell me the car will break in and get a few more MPG?
 
yes this has been discussed. as the car breaks in MPG will go up. i had same results as you, now im getting 15.0 MPG a year later and increasing.....
 
Consumption is low in city driving, but should improve as marctronixx noted. Highway average at 70-80 MPH the day after purchase in my case was 19.5 which commendable for such a truck. For now also doing about 11 mpg in town.

With only 450 miles on the vehicle you have probably only used 1 or 2 tanks of gas. Until you put 5,000 miles or more checking MPG is just for personal info, something to do. I'm not sure the QX will ever get much above 15-16 mpg at a steady speed of 65 or so. This is a big heavy vehicle. ;)And doubt at 70-80 mph it will get above 12-13.
The best method is to hand calculate mpg, not using the on-board computer.
I write down the mileage when I fill up then next time I fill up (at least 20 gallons or so, not 9 or 10 gallons) write the mileage and calculate mpg. Being anal about it I have kept a little book in all the vehicles I have owned just for this purpose. :D

With all that being said mpg will definitely improve. My QX has about 5,000 miles and gets about 14mpg city/highway. Taking a 1,000 mile trip later this month and hoping to see above 15mpg.

I've never reset the computer and I'm at 15.9 currently with about 60/40 split of city highway driving at just under 15k. I hovered around 14 up until about 5k and its been rising since. I do not baby it either and I'm cruising at 80-85 on the freeways. I'm guessing others who drive conservatively could get north of 17 easily. I'm going to hand calculate the next long trip I take to see what I come up with.
 
I took about a 9 hr drive during Thanksgiving and I got about 20 MPG with interstate driving at about 70 mph. Driving around town I get about 16 to 17 MPG.
 
I noticed that when driving on the highway the QX56 stays in 5th gear and never seems to auto shift to 6th or 7th gear. I started manually shifting into 6th and 7th gear on the highway and this improved my gas mileage big time.

I'll have to be honest and say I have never really looked to see what gear I was in but you can bet I will tomorrow. To clarify when you say highway you are referring to freeways and open roads correct? Like 70 mph zones?
If the transmission isn't shifting out to the higher gears at these speeds on all of our vehicles what could be the plausible reason?
 
I would bet you are in 6th or 7th. When you switch over to manual mode, the vehicle automatically drops to 5th no matter your speed. Watch the tach next time you do this.

Mine was also getting 11-13 in mostly city driving early on. On a road trip with less than 3k miles on it, it averaged only 16mpg. I was flying along and averaging 70mph or so but still I was contemplating the tradein value I would get after only 2 months of ownership.

I'm happy to say that now with 13k miles on it, I did a similar long distance hike at high speed and averaged 21mpg (while climbing and descending some moutain passes).

I really just wish the tank was bigger. The mileage doesn't bother me so much as the range anxiety. :)
 
Fuel Tank Capacity

I noticed your comment on the range you get per tank of gas. The owners manual says the fuel tank capacity is 26 gallons. The most I can get in the tank, even after running on empty is 20 gallons (display shows 0 miles or --- until empty & gas tank gauge is on empty). Either there is a 6 gallon reservoir that does not show up on the display or the fuel tank capacity in the manual is wrong.

The sand bagging fuel gauge is a well known issue for most owners. I think it is this way by design and you are not alone in only being able to get 20 in there. I think I have pushed it to 22 once.

the tank has a reserve in it just as the armadas do. when it gets to "--"
you have probably 5-6 gals left-ish. nissan wants you to fuel up sooner than you want to.

i can switch the car in 6 and 7th speeds less than 90 mph. the fastest cruise speed ive done it probably 70 mph. ive only been up to 90 or 80 when passing. i almost always drive auto tranny but when i hit stop and go i may slide over to manual tranny. still, ive been able to get to 6 and 7th gears no problem when on a straightaway.

i too will remember to pay attention tomorrow and see what happens...
 
For what it's worth, I was told last time I was in that there is a software update for the transmission for "driveability issues". Not sure what that means.
 
I just got back from testing this out on the highway. The previous poster is correct that when moving to manual shift mode at 80+ MPH the transmission downshifts to 5th gear and the RPM gauge fluctuates upward (higher RPM). However, I'm still curious to know when 6th and 7th gear actually kick in on automatic. I'm guessing 7th gear may not kick in unless going 70+ MPH so if traveling under 70 MPH better gas mileage on the highway could possibly be obtained by manually sifting into 7th gear.

I saw that and thought, 11mpg . Someone likes that 5.6 acceleration ! LOL

The worst MPG I have gotten around town is 16. But I don't care if the Looser in the Navigator beats me to the next stoplight ;)

Does anyone else think that sandbagging 4± gallons is ridiculous?
Did my first tank fill on my new 2013. I let it go down to ––– and the most I could get in there was 21.5 gallons.

What's the benchmark for sandbagging when you look at other manufacturers?
 
Tested out the manual shifter tonight on the freeway. At speeds between 70 and 80 mph in D I was right around 2k rpms. Moved into Manual shift and it downshifts to 5th gear and rpms jump up to around 3500 so I shift it back into 7th gear and the rpms fall right back where they were when it was in D. I found in my short and very unscientific testing that I was in 7th gear based on rpms at 65 and above.
 
the car will for sure go into 7gr at around 60. i confirmed this yesterday.

there are no set points for the car to shift at. the car measures different things to determine when to shift. G sensor, speed, road angle, etc.
 
I'm at 13.4 MGP at about 250 miles. 13.4MPG and 16.6MPH.
