Hi, I'm new to this forum and I've got a tons of useful information from this site. Thank you! I've just bought a 2013 Qx56 and I love it. My question is: What is the size limitation for the USB flash drive to use with QX56? I've tried to use a 16GB one and format it to FAT32 but the console keep saying reading from USB and will not continue.

I have gone through the pdf and it didn't specified the size. I did try 1 GB USB flash drive and it works without any issue. 16GB seems not working. Haven't try 4GB or 8GB yet. Anyone try it?

Seems as Infiniti knows there's issues with the USB.. look at all the "Do Not"... I would wager that the largest size it will take is 8gig... as it seems compatible with FAT16 & FAT32 only. FAT16 is like Windows95 stuff. Kinda like all the "older" electronic gadgets that wouldn't take the first 16gig drives. That would suck big time if it's the truth. If you have another 16gig or 32gig USB lying around, try it and let us know.

yes only fat 16 and 32, so you have to format a usb drive that way then copy any files over. it is old windows ce tech...

the size of the usb drive is not whats important, what matters is the folder, levels, and numbers of files.

Folder levels: 8

Folders: 512 (including root folder)

Files: 5000

so if you have 1 folder with 5001 files on a drive, you wont be able to play anything over 5000.

if you have folders 9 levels deep with 5 songs on them, the unit will not see any playable files,

etc. etc. and so forth.

many people these days have ipods and smartphones with their music on tap so this issue is not really important, but if you follow those rules above, you should have no issues with playing files (also take note of the encoding).

Thank you for your advice! That's very details for the information? Do you know any size limitation? I will retry on the 16GB and put less files to see if that works or not. I don't have any 4GB or 8GB around me to try.

Found a 8GB laying around and try it and it works with FAT32 and follows marctronixx's comment and it works.

cool, glad things are working for you.

i had a 2008 armada and it had the old school CF card slot. I used 16gb CF cards with no issue. again, the size of the card is not important, just the folder tree and how many files and folders are in that tree.

if you want to have folders for each song or album, make sure they are not a subfolder of a folder, if you understand what I mean.

or, for example, say you have a folder called "ROCK" and in that folder you have several ROCK albums of different artists. its cool to have a few folders under that "ROCK" folder, but its wise not to put any sub folders in those sub folders... ;)

I am currently using a 32GB card. Seems to work fine. I dragged the music folder under iTunes (on a mac) and it copied all of the folders. It's organized by artist, and then album, but the Q doesn't see the hierarchy and lists all folders. Kinda crappy.

32GB CF card or USB drive? You format to FAT32 and the QX56 can see it?

the 2011 and later model Qs dont have a CF slot.

ive a 64gb microsd card in a card reader and thats attached to the usb port. instead of folders upon folders, each artist has their own folder. in the ID3 tags i specify genre.

I have a 2012 Q25 and a PNY 32 GB formatted FAT32 seems to work fine and sees all the folders and files using the USB port in the console between the seats.
However, when I went to a PNY 64 GB FAT32 and put about 250 folders with about 10-20 files in each folder the port only seem to see half the drive.

A previous post said they got a 64gb drive to work.

Any suggestions?

I have a 2012 Infiniti G25 and have had success using a PNY 32GB flash drive.

However, when I tried to use a PNY 64GB drive the radio only seems to see half the drive.

I've tried putting each albumn (in this case its a live concert) in a seperate folder with the files in each folder. So I have about 240 folders/concerts with the files placed in them...no luck..only half is being seen.

So I tried breaking the folders down by year and then placing each folder withing their given year. So now I have about 12 folders....then about 10-30 folders in each one with the song files below that folder. Still no luck.

So my question is how have some had success using a 64gb drive? Seems there is some kind of limitation (perhaps 32GB) on what the USB port can read. Or is there and issue on how the folders and files are placed on the drive?

It is formatted FAT32 in all cases and I get no errors of any kind

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

One last thing, my desktop pc sees all the folders and files no matter how I load them.

Thanks

yes there is a limit to how many levels, folders, and files the system sees. it does not matter how large the drive is per se, but don't expect a full drive of that size to have all of its files and folders seen by the system.

i think earlier in this thread its been discussed the limitations of the system.

Thanks for the reply marctronixx...

I have read over the thread and still do not totally understand the limitations of the system except for the folder and file structure you discussed.

If then system will not read all the folders and/or files on a full 64gb flash drive then there must be a size limit it can read and simply not just a functon of folder levels and files.

My drive currently has only 13 main folders, with between 4 and 20 folders in each of those and the song files withing those folders. The total usage on the drive is around 53.3 gb but the USB in the car is only reading about 22.5gb of it.

Is there a way I could put these on the flash drive so it would read more of it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Again!

if you have a smaller drive that has enough capacity to store your files, just clone it to a smaller drive. i have a 32gb usb thumb drive in there currently for video playback and the system sees all of them.

how do you have the thumb drive formatted? the drive i use is fat32. if you have it formatted to something else, clone the thumb stick to the computer, reformat it in fat32 then copy the files back. then try it in the car...

@marctronixx
I know this is an old post, but I see you mentioned playing video on your 32gb thumb drive, Please how did you get it to play video? What video format did you use?

@kelvd4real , whats up bro.

I recall using an app called handbrake and using a codec in the owners manual that tells you what codecs the system will read. I also think handbrake has presets that you can use to do the conversion process easy. Maybe it was .wmv? But I can’t recall, but get handbrake!
