Timing chain recall 2011+ QX56

its an oil jet, timing guide issue. does not aply to the engine although if the oil jets are beyond repair, the engine may have to be replaced.
 
So is this a design flaw in the 5.6 motor? You would think the recall would fix the issue. Will post what the dealer tells me on Monday.

Interesting read from the techs.

Anybody know if the 5.6L engines in the Titan trucks are the same? When did infiniti fix the design in the QX motor? 2014 model year?

Is it possible that since your truck was one of the first to exhibit this issue, the parts used to repair it were the old wussy oil jets and chain? Even a portion of the 2013 vehicles fell under the recall. If that's the case, I think you'd qualify for another free fix :)

Titan was on a different platform then I believe, so likely different.

Redesign of oil jets and timing guides happened sometime during the 2013 model year. VIN # check.
 
Spoke to dealer this morning......

Infiniti corporate will to split the cost of the repair. The issue is that the oil jet needs to be seated in the engine block and if the block has expanded too much the oil will leak around the jet and not thru it. A new engine will be required. My suggestion was to see if the jet can be epoxied into the block just to get the repair done. Any thoughts? They are going to check with their Master tech on this. 50/50 chance the oil jet has too much play in it to seat itself properly

What to do? Any suggestions? Good luck to anybody else having to deal with this issue.

hmm, the explanation is brief and maybe incomplete but i don't see why the repair wouldn't have worked for you when it seems to have worked for everyone else. Sounds like they didn't really know what they were doing (because of the newness of the issue) and didn't do it correctly.

Not clear to me why you should have to split it especially given that isn't a cheap proposition. I just had my engine replaced and the engine itself is ~13,500. The labor is another 4-6k (not exactly sure, couldn't do the mental math that quickly).

Infiniti corporate isn't willing to do anymore. I am not sure how many QX's have the mileage I have on my truck. I drive a lot for my work. As a result, it's hard to say how well the "fix" is holding up if there are not enough miles on the repair. I have about 118K miles driven after the recall repair. Obviously, it hasn't held up.

Truck is done. The timing chain oil jet fit into the block without any excessive play. It fit within the specs Infiniti called for. I will be picking up the truck on Monday. The tech said the parts that were put in were the correct parts on the recall when it was done the first time.

Unfortunately, I will be shopping for a new vehicle in the next few months. I can not say how long this repair will last. I wasn't going to fight corporate for the repair. It's not worth the stress and aggravation in my opinion. I have driven Infiniti's for 16 years, but they lost a loyal customer after this experience.

For those of you that are putting miles on the repair, be aware that a failure is possible.
 
failures are possible on ANY car, any recall. you are at the mercy of the tech(s) doing the work.

I understand and appreciate your feelings on this ordeal, but its not fair to spread FUD over the internet in cases like this. anything man mad will break down, and you are correct these repairs can also be faulty. it happens on anything.

Just an update:

Got my recall done
Less then 1/4mi away from dealership
Check Engine Light
Limp Mode
Limped back to dealership
They clear it and said its the cam position sensor
Sometimes there are air pockets in the new fluid and triggers the error
Leave go get gas
Leave gas station less than 1/4mi away same thing
I clear it with my own tool and just make it home since kiddos are waiting
Call dealership to let them know
This consistently happend upon every start up basically after one clear it wouldnt come back until car was shut down
Another thing to note was for some reason I had a 3000PM limiter as well now
Well after making a short trip north to pick up a new toy
I brought the QX back into dealership
They ended up replacing the cam position sensor and finally all was good....so I thought
We got lucky had a warm day and I needed to turn on the AC
Guess what no AC now
Just nice warm air coming out even set at 60 degrees
Bring it back in they tell me the case is leaking now
Odd I had AC before I brought the car in for the recall
Service Advisor says they wont pay for new compressor
After talking to CSR Advisor and Service Advisor they said they would replace since I have been into the dealership so many times within a month for a recall that should have been handled better

After all of this
On top of a poorly tuned shifting transmission
Surging at cruise occasionally
I just couldnt like the QX anymore
Traded it on a 13 Escalade
 
After the catalytic converters failed, I'm just glad they recalled and paid for my timing chain job! I have had no issues with the repair and it was done in a timely matter. I feel anytime you buy the first year or two of a new vehicle platform, that you risk having unforseen issues that will be resolved in future model years and iterations. I had an 11 pilot that needed an entire new power steering rack at 10K miles. No brand is immune from this. Remember all those 6.0 powerstrokes that were blowing up 03-04? perfect example
 
I have read the 12 pages and have a question or two.
I am looking at replacing my 4wd pathfinder and first started looking at Amarda's, then noticed the better fuel milage for QX56 2011 on.
That got me here.
So do I buy a 2011 to 2013 with the valve timing recall done or pending ?
Since I am in Texas a lot of the QX's here are higher milage, one was 120k with recall not done.
Is there any reason to suspect this won't last when recall is done if it's made it to 120k without? Thanks.
 
the qx is built like a tank.

get a 2012 or newer. make sure the recall has been on done if the model vin calls for it.

yeah, would not recommend a 2011 even if recall performed (because the cats will still go). mine has had a lot of issues - engine replaced, AC went out, fuel pump, cats acting up periodically now. (especially compared to my 2007 g35 that has had exactly 2 wheel bearings replaced in 7 years of owning it).
 
in my opinion the 2012 added some subtle upgrades to the car that were not present in the 2011. and, it was the first year of the new design (even though it was based on the tried and true patrol)

id say the same thing about the 2004 armada. i would not get anything older than a 2006 based on the upgrades.

Thanks. will keep looking. the technology package also seems rare.
