Anyone else have this? I had one friend check the oil and he said it looked lower on the dip stick than it should be. Another friend said it sounds like the belt. It's not too disturbing at this point but of course I don't want the molehill to become a mountain.

what year model is your qx?
the qx does not have a belt -- its a timing chain.
the DI engine makes a ticking/clackity noise. does the "ticking" increase with rpm?
did you just buy the car? is it used or new? mileage? if used any maintenance records?
does it drive as you would expect? any CEL light?
if an older model (less than 2017) did it have the timing chain recall done? any outstanding TSBs?

Thanks for the response.

2011 QX56 has a serpentine belt.

What’s DI engine?

Ticking speeds up as I rev the engine.

Used, 110K miles, no other issues, runs great. No timing chain recall that I know of.

Direct Injected gasoline engine. thats what "DI" stands for. youtube will give you more info on it.
so it sounds likes what you are hearing is normal. you can search the internet to hear other qxs and 2nd gen armadas (they have the same engine) sound like so you can have an idea.

you state there is "no timing chain recall" that you know of. have you done any research on the VIN? did you just buy the car? that model year was one of the main years for the recall of the oil jets in the timing chain.
i also asked other questions you did not answer. do you have a CEL lamp? any maintenance records on the car? did you buy it from a 3rd party or dealer? if the former, did they disclose any issues?

I don’t think so on the timing belt recall but I’ll double check.

No check engine light is on. Nothing out of the ordinary shown on Carfax. Bought from 3rd party a year ago, no issues. He took it to the dealer religiously for maintenance. I did have to get several oil changes as the oil was low when I bought the car and I had all kinds of problems. Documented on this forum. That led me to believe maybe Seafoam in the oil tank would help?

ok we are conflating two different things.

there is an accessory belt for alternator, water pump, sure. but the engine has a timing chain. i was not referring to the accessory (serpentine) belt. that would not make the "ticking" noise that i hear and it sounds like its normal. i thought you were saying the engine used a [timing] "belt" since that's what you said in your initial post.

anyway, :) i think the engine sounds normal. id still make sure the recall on the oil jets was done or at least your VIN was not one of the VINS recalled...

if you have the maintenance records and the previous owner gave your car a good bill of health, i think you are in a good space. you can always stop by a dealer and fire up a new one on the lot to hear the engine. again to me it sounds normal.

I took this to the dealer, they said I needed a $16,000 engine replacement. Got a second opinion, apparently it’s the timing chain. Only 112,500 miles on the thing. Anyone with experience on getting reimbursed for this if the VIN is not qualified for the recall?

Also, it’s interesting, the dealer implied I might have a case had I continued to take the car in to the dealer for service over the past year. This is of course the same dealer who elected to not change the oil after 6 months prior to my buying the car which led to oil issues. Not to mention trying to sell me a new engine when all I need is a timing chain and replacing the tensioner along with some seals and gaskets to take care of the ticking and oil issues I mentioned.
