The first thing I noticed while driving it was that it handled like a much smaller vehicle. I’ve driven F250’s and other similar sized vehicles and they have just felt huge and ponderous with vague steering but the QX did not. Very comfortable ride, excellent sightlines and responsive steering. The kids loved it of course as the tested model had everything (bench 2nd row although I would get the captain’s chairs). The power was adequate although I’m used to a much smaller and faster car.
All in all I was impressed with it although for such a large vehicle it doesn’t have nearly as much capacity as my wife’s Odyssey. Still it would do everything I would need and I wouldn’t have to drive her car again which would be the point of buying it. It’s something I’ll have to think on as most of my driving is still commuting which means I’m dropping the kids off at school or camp and then it’s just me in the car. I’d only have to deal with my wife’s car on the weekend and on trips, or when I want to carry anything large.
The thing I’m concerned about is that while I would enjoy it for a year or two I may become disenchanted quickly. Years ago when I first had kids I traded in my coupe for a mid-sized crossover. It was a great family car but after two years I hated driving it. Then I went back to a coupeish car and after a couple years dealing with the kids in it and changing the tires each fall and spring I sold it. Now I have a performance hatch with AWD and good functionality which I’ve had for 5 years. The only issues I have with it are the lack of any technology, refinement or amenities. That and my wife despises perhaps even loathes it so it’s basically a commuter car.
Ideally what I’d want is the car I have now but a luxury version of it. While these sorts of cars are sold in Europe they are not sold in the US so whatever I buy in the future will again be a compromise.
On a side note I drove an FX50, I was not impressed, it felt only marginally faster than the QX, didn’t seem to handle much better for the firmness of the suspension and had worse sightlines than my current car.
