My 2000 I30 often gets stuck in park and I cannot shift it out of park when I push brake pedal down. I can usually release it. But it takes a few hard hits on the brake pedal to do so. I don't believe the brake lights work when this happens either.
Any help would be appreciated.

Well, if anyone has a similar problem, its an easy fix. It was the break light switch. Located under dash on drivers side. 5 min fix, $25 part.

when i had that problem, it was the brake release spring on the shift lock. once it was popped out the shifter could be shifted out without a problem.

When I bought my i30 from my Aunt (a few days ago), she said that was the only thing wrong with it. She said sometimes it gets stuck in Park and you have to push in the shiftlock switch. I noticed today, that when the shift lock doesn't work, the brake lights aren't coming on. When I press the pedal again and the shift lock finally disengages, the brake lights ARE working. Simple fix: replace brake light switch. :D

That a clever design really, if your brake lights stop working the car lets you know by not letting you shift the transmission!
