Rear Camera died

those cameras are not user serviceable. if there is indeed water corrosion in there, the camera is likely beyond repair, nor worth the hassle trying to clean it out, etc.

going OEM is the only way to get guaranteed plug and play plus the alignment of the colored directional guides.

if you JUST want a backup camera, you can get a licence polast camera or similar that tapes into the reverse wire to trigger. you then route the input into a rearview mirror monitor or similar...

there are a few aftermarket cameras for just this purpose but you will most likely lose factory functionality.

just keep checking salvage yards...

I do see that infiniti parts is running a 25% off sale. Still very expensive at $690 but better than $918.

And I have yet to find one from a junk yard. Any idea how much junk yard camera's run? Could I get a used one a lot cheaper than $690? If the prices are similar no sense in going with the used one with no warranty.

Finally, are there any other coupon codes or discounts I can use to get that $690 price down even further? I tried ESTORE2015 (said it expires in 2020) as well as Q2ESTORE2014 (expires in 2020 as well) with no luck.
 
sadly i dont know the cost of these parts. im sure they are much less than what you can get from a dealer.

the cameras are close to other nissan cars, so look at armada backup cameras. get the part number and do a cross reference.
 
Just bought the one from inifinitpartsonline last night for $695 shipped, but I'm having second thoughts b/c I just found one shipped directly from China for $64!!

Simple answer: I do not think it will be same as OEM. But you can take a gamble. Who knows for certain? I don't.

OEM is $695 and the chinese one is $64. Seriously you cannot ask if it is legit to someone who has not tried it and is not a chinese seller. He cannot confirm it as if he has one or is endorsing the product that it will work perfectly as OEM would. I do not think he will tell you, yes, go for it!

Just look at the price difference. It is very unlikely the chinese people will make a OEM that would be at par with OEM and then sell it for dead cheap at $64.

I personally buy A TON of things from China. Like my leds in my QX are premium quality and from China.

But this camera? Well, I will tell you that if the price is such ridiculously cheaper than OEM and you do mind losing $64, then take the gamble. I will say it is a gamble. I mean, we are here driving a QX that costs way over $50,000. Order it, install it and if not happy, do not be upset. It will be a learning experience. We all have that throughout life. Then after that, you can order your OEM.

The chinese one may not match with the others, the camera may not align with the other ones, the color may not be the same and generally I do not think it will be of same quality and performance as OEM. But hey, give it a shot and be open minded that you can be very disappointed.

I bought my front rotors very cheap from a company in California who told me the rotors are from China. I have put over 35,000 miles on them and my QX stops on a dime. And I do not baby that car nor any of my cars. Well, granted all pads and other rotors are OEM and everything was brand new when I installed all of them.

But I just want to say I buy some things made in china and some work great, some don't.

Take a gamble and let us know. Some people have done so and shared their experiences and that is how it helps others make the right decision of maybe buying like you or staying away from it.

petite is on the right path and i would normally agree, but with respect to these backup cameras, they are not unique.

to my eye, the china ebay looks like oem. nissan do not make the cameras. they are outsourced.

all the camera needs to do is to plug into the harness. the wiring must match. the BCM gets a request from the TCM to activate the camera.

the BCM in turn asks the CCU to activate rear camera.

rear camera is turned on and provides an image.

all the backup lines and other hocus pocus happens in the CCU.

i would need to know that the harness is wired properly--this you cant really know unless you get it.

you can ask the ebay seller to provide a warranty/guarantee it will fit your car and worse case if it doesn't, you can get your money back, but get that in writing.

that said, if it were me, i would just get OEM... :D

I'll give it a try and see what happens. Worse case I'm out $64. I should have it by the end of the month.

However, if it works I'll let you guys know so others can save some cash.

BTW....seller says 30 day money back guarantee and gives a 12 month warranty. But we will see.

eBay and PayPal are pretty good about protecting their buyers. If the seller didn't respond to (or denied) your return request, most likely eBay would step in and refund you. Just make sure you follow their process. Shipping back to China would be a pain, so hopefully the thing works!

Camera worked, but then I went into diagnostics (volume 30 clicks + setting button) and set camera back to factory defaults. And then all of the sudden the car shut off and now it won't start. It's like the battery is dead. Just clicks. I even disconnected the camera. Put my battery charger on the battery and it is reading 6v! Is it possible this camera caused the battery to short? Very Very strange.

Ok, went back out and disconnected the battery, reconnected, then jumped it with my other truck and the damn thing started. So, then reconnected the camera and everything seems to be working now. Not sure what happened but maybe I really did kill the battery by leaving the tailgate up for too long while I was fixing the camera.

mine is in the shop today for rear suspension compressor and camera diagnostics. If camera comes back big $$ then I might look at the $64 china option.

how difficult was the replacement?

Confirmed bad camera model. $tealership offered to fix it for the low price of $1250

ETA- picked up this AM from dealership. They indicated there was some corrosion on the camera module which was probably causing the problem. I just ordered the $64 part from china based on pdiddy's link. It looks like about a 2 hour job - removing rear lift gate interior trim and upper exterior trim. Unfortunately the camera will come on the slow boat from China so maybe a thanksgiving weekend job. Hopefully this will same me $1100 as pdiddy's seems to have worked.

Thanks for posting the pictures. I am sure it will help some other forum member(s) and some people who just visit forums to read. Because this is what the dealership replaced on my QX for $2,400. My extended warranty paid that. But we all see now that this is something that can be replaced for only $65 by buying the camera from China.

This is what is truly good about these forums. If someone finds something which others can benefit from, please guys, share like others do take time out of their own busy days to share like what we see here.

There are so many people on forums who just bash things made in China and say all kinds of bad things as if anything built in China will not last or is not good. But just look at how cheap this camera costs and works great and it comes from China.

I am really glad it worked for you because I am one of those that love to buy things from China. I buy from there a lot.

Buying from China is definitely a gamble, but I like it that most of the things we buy from China do not cost an arm and a leg. Such that if you take a gamble and it turns out bad, then do not feel so bad. But I know for a fact a lot of things made in China do work. A typical thing for me is leds. All my leds are from China and you have to know which ones to buy because it takes a lot of try and error or luck to tumble on the perfect or best ones for your application.

Mine was bad too and my extended warranty paid $2,400 to get it replaced.

Glad to see you ordered the cheap one from ebay.

When you get yours and install, share some pictures too if you can. Would be nice to see. I am sure there are tons of people who if they find this information would be so grateful for saving a lot of money with such a great and cheap fix.

goblue it's really easy to replace the camera.

You will need to pull the lift gate panel though (pg INT-39 and 40 of this link). Once the panel is off there are 4 nuts holding on the infiniti bracket that houses the camera, as well as the clip holding the camera. It will be obvious once you take the lift gate panel off.

For reference this is what the infiniti bracket will look like once removed (link)

Then once you have the infiniti backet off there are two screws holding the camera on. Replace the camera, put the infiniti bracket back on, reconnect the camera in the lift gate and then put the lift gate panel back on (just snaps back in).

Once done you may need to go into your head unit and set the camera to factory defaults, but it's really easy as well (pg AV-29 of av manual).

I'm in GA, so corrosion should not be the problem on the wife's 2011 M37x.

The camera works fine sometimes, sometimes shows jagged lines and other times is black except for the guide lines.

The local dealer wanted $1090 to replace the camera - its not worth that to me.

These things are such a ripoff, as such a camera has a manufacturing cost of about $40.

update on the ebay seller from China. Clearly a fraud. Camera was never delivered after months. Refund issued. They claim that it got lost in shipping and they have none left even though ebay lists multiple items for sale. At one point they said they could send one without a bracket. The axiom if it seems to good to be true it probably is applies here

Think I will try the Chinese camera.

The camera on my wife's 2011 M37x works fine in cold weather - but goes squirrelly when the weather warms up, static an various colors, plus the lines.
 
My rear camera has become intermittent on my 2011 QX56 and needs attention.

I'm guessing loose connection or more probably corrosion. Want to tackle this myself but need the correct tool to pop off the tailgate trim.

Where can I find the correct tool online, and does anyone have an update on compatible cameras from China?

The China camera did not work. These guys never shipped and I don’t even know if they refunded me. I’lll have to check. I ended up buying a new camera off eBay for around $780. Labor was easy. I got a trim removal kit from the auto store for about $15. Amazon had some choices too. Really don’t know if I even needed. I muscled off the panel. Need small metric socket 8mm or so. The one line manuals on nicoforum are gone but I found a link somewhere that I will see if Ican find and post.

Actually back to the labor. I had a hell of a time getting the Philips screws off the mounting bracket because they were so rusted. I tried creating oil and it did not work so I had to torch them off, which was difficult because there is rubber and plastic around. The chrome looked plastic Infiniti logo part that hold the camera is $1400 to replace so I was pretty concerned on unmounting the camera fro the bracket.
