Hi,
Our rear view camera died. It just shows black or grey. I've gone in to the diagnostic menu and it seems dead in there too (turn off radio, turn volume dial while pushing settings button).

This ever happen to anyone else here, and if so, what was the cause?

I have heard that if the sensor(s) are disconnected and the reconnected the dealership or whomever needs to do some sort of re-initializing or re-synchronizing.

do you see the guidelines on the screen even though the video is not showing properly? if so then the ccu is ok, its just the camera.

not a common occurrence, but it can happen. i forget your model year but like i always say, first thing is check for any DTCs at the obd port. if none, could be simply a faulty camera sensor.

no, the rear shows nothing. either a flat black or gray screen. The calibration menu showed some adjustment details, but of course, on a black background.

yes. i wonder if salt got in there and ruined it. a bit of corrosion or something on the underside of the unit.

I'm in the midwest, but purchased my QX from the Boston area. I had lots of weird rust and salt issues, too. My camera was killed by all the salt and corrosion. They are kind of a pain to change out, but not too bad. Make sure you get some extra clips that hold the rear plastic panel on the to inside of the back door. You'll break some during removal.

Also, doesn't the camera seem stupid expensive for what you get?

well, hopefully mine will still be covered by warranty, but if not thanks for the advice. i'd assume it's probably worth $10 but i don't want to know the cost.

it's being replaced/is covered

Congrats! :)

how much is a camera replacement? is it difficult to do on your own? I have a gray screen and no backup lines. In the midwest.

sounds like your CCU/camera control unit may be the issue.

you have a QX 2011+ not an older qx or older armada yes?

if you have the new qx, are the other cameras showing up on the screen when you activate the camera button?

if you have access to the service manual there is a test mode to get into to check the camera zones, etc. This may be useful to look around, but be careful if you do because you can change the sensor settings and mess things up.

always check the obd port for any error codes/dtc's before exploring ways to troubleshoot...

If you drive 2011+ QX, my warranty replaced mine for $1,1XX.00 out the door. With OEM part. I paid $100 deductible.

So, I don't know how much it would cost you to buy OEM or after market and do yourself.

I just bought a 2010 qx56, and I knew at the time of purchase the camera did not display an image. The rear proximity sensor works and the audible beep alerts when getting close to an object.

Is there a common culprit with the camera lens/sensor that is repairable or do I need to shell out the 300$ for a new camera assembly?

thanks for any suggestions or help. I'm pretty handy and have a pretty good understanding of electronics so id like to try and repair if its feasible.

This is cross posted on the nico forum.

I just bought a QX56 and when reverse is engaged the screen changes to the "look behind you before whatever" screen but no image shows for the camera, also no indication lines just black screen.

I have done my research and everything points to the Camera control module. Great easy fix...
I checked the fuses none are blown.
I put the nav screen in the diagnostic mode "settings and counter clock wise on the volume knob" it reported the camera was working fine.
I measured the voltage and the power and Acc pins both of them are getting around 13-15v

So I bought a replacement used "working" module. However in my excitement i did not notice it is slightly different only in model number. I went ahead and swapped them anyway. I still did not fix my issue. It does the exact same thing. Black screen no indication lines. Diag reports no problems.

The original module is model EN-1201H-D
The replace module is model EN-1201H

I opened them both up electrical component wise they look identical. I thought about the swapping the EPROM chips around on them from the orignal to the replacement incase there is a different software version or something. Am I chasing my tail here. What else could it be. Should I just find the EXACT replacement and reorder the stupid thing. Thanks for taking a look sorry a little long winded.

yeah i answered you at nico too..

typically if you see the guide lines and the "please watch behind you..." sentence on screen it points to the camera, and if nothing is shown, that points to the CCU.

nissan updates their parts just like any other manufacturer, so there will be a slight difference in numbering.

you say "I put the nav screen in the diagnostic mode "settings and counter clock wise on the volume knob" it reported the camera was working fine. "

does this mean you SEE an image??

did you check obd port for any trouble codes?

did you physically LOOK at the camera to see if there is anything blocking the sensor?

extreme rare case its a BCM or TCM fault (highly unlikely but want to mention since those parts play a part in all this).

if you did not replace the camera that is the next part in the chain. just because the camera is getting power does not mean its "working fine". the sensor itself could be faulty even though the camera powers up.

i suspect the problem is corrosion. that was the problem with mine. it's not totally sealed.

Yeah, mine corroded as well. Kind of a pain to change out, but not too bad.

I bought a used 2012 QX56 back in october and the rear camera worked fine for a few months then it would start to flake out. Like sometimes it worked while other times it would just show a black screen for the rear camera when I would put it in reverse. Now, it never works.

Also, i don't see the backup lines :( . I went into diagnostics and looked at the camera diagnostics and the 3 rear camera settings all have "NG" (ex. rear camera comm line NG), but all the other camers have "OK".

Does this sound like a rear camera or around view monitor control unit?

I don't want to spend $1000+ for a $10 camera, so if it is the rear camera does anyone know if I can get the camera itself on digikey or something and use the current casing?

BTW...Here is the link to the debug manual I found (starting at pg184)

the oem camera is not 10 dollars. its much more.

it could be anything.. faulty wiring harness, CCU, camera sensor, corroded harness...

if you are handy with electronics and wiring and are comfy removing the bark door trim and interior back panel finisher to access these items, then it seems you have the things you need to make that happen.

otherwise, if you don't have the time, or proper tools, spend 80 bux or whatever the diag fee is at the dealer and have them figure it our for you then if its something you think you can fix, search out for the parts.

camera component price (not packaged)

I was exaggerating when I said the camera was $10 but I didn't think it was $800+ (which is what Infiniti charges).

Just wondering how much the component really does cost (without packaging). And until i tear it apart I really can't look it up.

BTW, do you know where i can find instructions on how to take the camera off? I haven't found it yet?

the service manual is avail online for free. just search for 2011 qx56 service manual. thats all you need.

yes the parts on this car are expensive. anything electronic will be moreso since nissan dont build these, they outsource these components.

in terms of not knowing where to start, this is why i suggested spending the diag fee at infiniti and have them smoke over the car. they can give you the potential areas of concern (or they may find the issue outright!)and you are only out 60-80 bux (whatever the cost is in your state), plus you save your hair and time.

once you get the service manual, you will see the part numbers. just call up any infiniti and ask them the cost. OR you can search salvage yards, second hand websites, etc for parts.

Infiniti confirmed, it is the rear camera.

Had the QX56 in to fix the SES light for the Catalytic Converter (thankfully under 8 years and 80k miles, but its only one side P0420 :( ). Break pads are also wearing pretty fast (IMHO), at a 4 on the back and just put them on 15k miles ago.

But also had them look at the backup camera issue, and they said the backup camera needs replaced and it will run $1090!! The camera alone is $900.

Even used cameras are $800 (with no guarantees).

And I know you guys frown on DIY options but there has to be another (cheaper way) to fix this.

marctronixx I see that you are also on the clubarmada forums and you've commented on a $14 DIY solution for an older QX model. Just wondering if there is ANYTHING else I can try?

Has anyone taken off the camera, opened it up, removed the corrosion, and it fixed the problem?
