Ready to install Borla Cat-Back on a 2012 QX

i think earlier in this thread i mentioned i installed a magaflow. i had two armadas and the magaflow muff on them was amazing. there was a little drone at cruising speeds on the armadas but with the 7 gears on the q, the drone is not there unless you put your foot in the tank. :D

no sound clips. the muff shop welded a pipe on the back. its not seen at the bumper due to my choice so the shop painted it black and it sits up and behind the bumper so no pipe shows.

the magaflow muff opens up the lungs just enough on the car to make it breathe as a V8 should. plus the car no longer sounds like a soccer mom-mobile. it sounds like a 5.6 L v freaking 8!

my point is the stock exhaust system on the Q is already tops for a stock exhaust, so a good cheap mod is simply remove the resonator and stock muff and replace with a muff of your experience or go with the magaflow. lots of cats with armadas have gone with the magaflow and i had one on both armadas I had.

Thanks. I will not tolerate any drone in this car so to be safe I will probably go with borla.

i dont have drone. i guess i didnt make that clear. when I put my foot in the tank i will hear he rumble form the muff but at cruising speeds with this 7 sp tranny i dont hear drone.

i think the cat back design is not all that and you will get some drone from it. its similar to the armada design and there is drone there on those cars. again not nerve racking drone but you can't totally eliminate that based on the design, unless you have a resonator or glass pack or tip on the exhaust.

but do as you feel most comfortable to do. :) i certainly understand your concerns...

K dubb , r u planning on installing borla system soon? Can you let me know how it goes...have seen them for just a little over $1000 shipped online. I plan on purchasing when i return back to states from overseas.

Ok thanks. Can you take any pictures of what you did? I can't quite picture it in my head.

Also, the guy that started this thread and installed the borla did say there was no drone. It would be nice if there was a confirmation though :)

Also, is the stock muffler chambered or straight through? I'm guessing chambered.

stock is chambered.

there is some drone, just depends on who you ask and how sensitive they are to the sound.

What is the model number of magnaflow you got? Can you post a pic of the tip?

id have to find the invoice on the muff. its been 2 years ago... :D

i dont have a tip. they welded on a pipe and its concealed under the bumper.

go to magnaflow's site:

http://www.magnaflow.com/

put in your model year. there you will see the exhaust setup and the measurements for the muff.

call reputable shops in your area and reference the muffler. its a pretty big sucker the stock muff is, so if you do decide to remove it, and its in good condition, you can probably get a couple bucks for it. it was a large lil thing.. ;)

there are other mufflers also but i have been using magnaflow since 2006 across two armadas and now the Q and the quality is excellent.

Hi,

All that shows me is the catback system. Are you saying the muffler from that system fits the stock pipe?

Thanks

yes the muffler is the measurements you are looking for.

take those measurements into your local magnaflow shop and they can give you the model number for the proper size magnaflow...

Installed the borla last week, sounds GREAT no drone at 60/70/80 but you can for sure hear it! Sounds great on start almost dont hear it at all on idle after it warms up.

Bought it on amazon for great price and free shipping if you have prime

I have been thinking about getting the Borla dual exhaust as well, but not sure about the diagonal side exit tips. How bad is the spare tire in the way if one was to have a muffler shop change the exit location from side to rear?

Great to hear!!! :) At my dealer, I know the techs get a kick out of it everytime I bring it in for service.

I don't recall seeing pictures of your install. Did you end up changing it to straight out the back? I see the borla system doesn't have an "X" pipe. Is there room for an actual X pipe to be custom welded up? Thinking about buying the stainless steel custom pipe kit and get an X pipe and MagnaFlow muffler and having someone tig up a system for me.
