Qx56 cracked windshield

2012 QX56; this morning I noticed a crack in the windshield that was not there the night before (it is noticeable enough I'm sure I would have noticed when parking in the garage). There is not any appearance of a rock or other debris that would start the crack. Looking from the front of the vehicle the crack begins at the top of the windshield where it meets the chrome strip, slightly to the right of the rear-view mirror, runs down about 6 inches, then left toward the passenger side about 12 inches just left of the rear-view mirror mount. The entire crack is inside the black/dark shaded upper part of the windshield (embedded antennae?? or sun block? whatever it is :confused:).

Has anyone ever had this problem? I plan to take to the stealership Monday and hopefully a windshield defect. Has anyone otherwise had to replace a windshield? Repaired by stealership or independent glass shop? Cost?
 
Did u hear a loud CRACK while driving around the day prior?? coulda been a small stone that hit right at the tip of the windshield/molding.
 
No, did not hear anything. I know what you mean by hearing a loud pop or noise having had stones/rock hit the windshield on other vehicles. Luckily none cracked. This has me puzzled, but if I was a betting man my money would be on a rock or something hitting it. It is just hard to believe I never heard or saw anything until finding the crack the other morning.
Hopefully I will get it to the dealership in the next couple of days, might get lucky and find it is a defect :rolleyes:

So I just noticed a crack in my windshield and not sure if I took a rock hit or what. Wasn't there two days ago.
Anyone have an idea on what the dealership would charge to replace it?
Somewhere between ouch and BOING?
 
I have a crack that extends along the entire bottom of the windshield. I called my Infiniti dealer and asked if they could recommend a shop that replaces the glass. They did.

When I called them they asked me if I had the lane departure and IBA camera in the windshield and I said yes, to which they referred me back to the dealer as they don't do that replacement glass.

I have an appointment this Saturday and will ask what the going rate is to replace a windshield on a QX.
 
Checked with Safelite and the windshield would be over 1,000 installed. I have lane departure and IBA camera. If the crack was less than the length of a dollar bill they could repair ir for 119.00. Not sure if I would be able to see it though. If I could it would bug me. I could live with it I think...LOL
 
Out the door price for a new windshield on the 2012 qx is $1200 here. I checked into it last summer. My windshield looks like a domestic dispute victim. Lol.
I have a total of five stone collisions on the windshield. Three of which were out of my view and in the black portion below. All ran wildly. One came up about 5 inches into my line of sight and ran all the way across to the other side. That was from just above where the driver's windshield wiper connects. Two more on the passenger's side. One ran straight up in the line of sight of the passenger (wife is pissed) and stopped at 3/4 of the way up the windshield. Has made it all winter without increasing so I think it's done.
The other was below the crack running across thankfully so when it ran it only joined the original crack running across. The other two are minor and don't appear to be getting worse. Three of the five happened after I enquired about a new windshield so I'm sure you can understand my hesitation. My deductible is $500 so I have held off waiting for it to sunburst before I replace it as I would be paying 1/2 of the cost. May be cheaper to drop to a $0 deductible over time at this rate. Got to love the roads of Michigan...
I have never owned a vehicle this new with this much glass damage. Lucky me it's a magnet for stones. Thankfully no body or hood damage.

maybe look into the bug guard for the front.

i have had the oem bug guard on the front since day one of the car and its helped with debris and flying insects. :D maybe it can help deflect small rocks....
 
So I went in to get the 60,000kms service (basically oil change and inspection) I also had the front centre console tightened as it was squeaking when really cold. They tried their best but it still squeaks a bit. I also had the rear hatch hinges fixed as it creaked bad when opening and closing. Seems to have worked.

I also asked about a new windshield and literally fell off my chair when he told me the price. Between $1800 to $2200 to replace and it has to be done by Infiniti (but subbed out to a local glass place). Apparently, the local glass place cannot order the parts directly and only Infiniti can get them (bullshit??) He also said that the glass changed slightly from 2011 to 2012 so it was a bit cheaper for a 2012. 2011 glass was about $2500. WTF.....
 
That's consistent with what I was told. I asked the body shop. They checked into it and told me they would have to order through Infiniti. I was rear ended last summer and nearly all of the replacement parts had to be ordered by the Infiniti dealer and delivered to the body shop to be installed.
Infiniti quoted me $1200 if they ordered it and installed it. Body shop quoted me $1900 to order from same place and do the install. Go figure.
I have the 2012 so I can't speak for the different price on the 2011 but the price on this one was bad enough...
