Changed the oil in the ol' QX Last evening. Had let the dealer change it last time back in December 2011. Can't remember the miles, it was like 35xx or something.
Its close to 7 months later and it was black as coal and I said, well the miles maybe low but I don't like black-ee oil in a non-diesel, so Mobil-1 went in !
Its like 48xx or 49xx, I'd have to go look. I just didn't know what they put in it at the dealer, they are short on details.

They must have cranked on the OEM Nissan oil filter from Chiner ! That thing would not come off ! I finally used my Ridgid Tool Strap wrench to get the thing off, it was on to stay.
Part number for filter Nissan 15208-9E000 (unfortunately Chiner)
K&N oil filter HP 1010 (USA)
MOBIL one Oil Filter M1-110 (USA)

So went to autozone to get the cap wrench to fit over the Nissan filter, it has 14 flutes and is a 65mm. Well you know auto-zone, they really never have exactly what you want, but may have something close and the sales guy follows you around pleading you to buy something.
So I bought this one cap wrench for my ratchet that was allegedly 65mm, and 67mm 14 flutes, (the flats on the side of the filter).
It starts as 67mm and then narrows to 65mm.
Don't even bother buying the thing at autozone. It spun on the filter, took it back the next day. Had to use the strap wrench.
If you get the cap wrench that fits on your 3/8 ratchet, get the NAPA cap its good, fits like a glove! NAPA part number 77-3860

I put the Mobil one filter on this time, hand tighten only. Gosh, why do they over-torque them oil filters on too tight ? I got some little crush washers for the drain plug online at a Nissan seller.
Put the skid plate back on and was done, except for adding the 6.5 quarts of oil. It says 6.8 capacity in the owners manual, but I fill the filter before putting it on, so I added only 6.5 quarts. I wanted to see where it came up on the dipstick.
Then it was so clean I couldn't see it on the dipstick ! LOL I had to get my glasses. It was just at the bottom of full area. I may add just a bit more to bring it up a bit.
Have you a funnel to add your oil cause the oil filler neck is low compared to the Motor cover. Other than the dealer putting on the filter so tight it was one of the easiest to change. 14mm socket for the oil pan drain plug, 13 mm socket for the four bolts that hold the skid plate on.
Nissan was very smart, they put a little drip plate under the oil filter. they placed it right over the steering rack to protect it, so it will catch the oil when it drips from the loosened filter and route it to your pan. Very smart, attention to detail, like you would expect from a quality Japanese built vehicle.
So nice, no mess at all, plenty of room to work with. I have the 20 inch rims and raised the QX up only about 3 inches. I have flat 2x10's and a one inch thick board screwed to them and they lay flat on the floor, no way to fall and super stable. I use them for my truck.
I had $28 dollars in the oil, 6 quarts Mobil one 5w-30 synthetic, I had the other quart here at the house. I think $9 or $10 bucks in the filter ( two packs on amazon) and $9 dollars on the cap wrench from NAPA, which I will use over and over.

QX was easy to change, you can do it if you like. Hope you can use the part numbers.
Have a good one ,

2011 QX-56 Black-ee with the 20 inch rims theater pkg with split rear seats, and saving of the upgraded exhaust, 48xx miles I think, and a solar cell for the battery charger.

Stop adding more oil. Over filling an engine with engine oil actually hurts performance and mileage since it has to work harder against too much oil.

Make sure you're reading at the right time, for most cars it's turn off warm engine and wait 1 min but the manual should tell you exactly when.

Ideal IMO is about 3/4 of the dipstick, even half is okay but right on the FULL is not good because if you're reading it at cold, the oil warms up and goes over FULL and there's too much in there.

I used to have a Prius and we were religious about getting max mileage and overfilled engine oil is a mileage killer.

I've changed my oil in a lot of cars and I found that in general, DO NOT put in the exact amount it states in the manual. You have to remember that there's a lot of residual oil stuck to the engine, pan, case, etc, etc and isn't coming out. So if you put in the max in the manual, you're overfilling. Usually, the amount they say to put in without filter is a good amount, then it goes in the filter and gives you a reading of 3/4 dipstick or maybe a tick more.

Great write up. Do you know if same procedures apply to my 2007? I am going to use the mobil filter and 5w30 Mobil Syn.

Thanks

07 ?

Hmmmmm ? I don't know for sure Bud4ya. Maybe Marc can confirm, but the 11 & 12's have a newer motor? Maybe its the same motor tweaked just a little to get a little more HP. I wouldn't think its too much different. Once you get your skid plate off the bottom, you should see the filter.

You can do it, As long as the previous person that put the filter on didn't torque it down so tight it won't come off. I hate that part.

The new filter will spin on easy, I hand tighten mine if I can get a good grip on the filter, cause you can't over tighten it with your hands. That's just me.
If I can't get a hold of the filter, I will put a filter wrench on it, but just snug the filter, don't crank down on it.

Have fun, its good knowing you did it yourself and not wondering if they put the right oil in your QX or cross threaded the drain plug or filter. Let us know how it goes
Have a good one

Thank you I am going to change it tonight. Looks like 6.5 quarts. I will use Mobil 5w30 Syn and Mobil Filter M1-110.

I will not crank on the filter as I do have a tendency to do that. Then when I go to take it off I say never again will I tighten that much :) Always afraid it is going to leak.

Thanks
