Hey guys! I just recently got myself an 03 manual g35 coupe. Im looking to build it out while keeping the motor. Does anyone have any good tips and tricks for me? Aswell as mods? I have a few things I know already. Plenum spacer, oil catch can (yes mine burns oil bad), spark plugs, ignition coils. I know they regularly need the throttle body cleaned aswell. Other than that I'll love any suggestions. I'd like to keep it budget friendly without buying things that will easily give out. I hope I can get some advice! Thanks everyone!
That's an excellent project! The 03 G35 coupe with the manual transmission is a fantastic car, and the VQ35DE engine is known for being reliable and a great platform to build on. You've already got a good list of maintenance and initial mods, which is a perfect way to start a build.
Here are some tips and tricks, as well as a few budget-friendly mod suggestions that won't give you trouble down the road.
Tips and Maintenance:
- Oil consumption: You're right to be concerned about this, as it is a very common issue with the VQ35DE. While an oil catch can is a good idea, you should also be diligent about checking your oil level every couple of gas fill-ups and topping it off as needed. It's the best way to keep the engine healthy.
- Timing chain tensioners: On some of the early models, the timing chain tensioners can be a source of noise. A rattle on a cold start that goes away after a few seconds can be a sign of a loose timing chain. This is something to be aware of and check if you hear it.
- Camshaft and crankshaft position sensors: These are a known weak point on the G35. They can fail without warning and cause the car to not start. It's a good idea to keep a spare set of these sensors (and the brake light switch) in the car.
Budget-Friendly Mods:
- Intake: You can go with a Z-tube and a Pop-charger. The Z-tube is a factory Nissan part from the 350Z that is a more free-flowing air intake tube than the G35's. It works great with a performance cone filter, and together they are a very cheap and effective way to improve airflow.
- Exhaust: This is a great budget mod for sound and a little bit of power. A popular option is a "muffler delete" or an "axle-back" exhaust. A full cat-back system is more expensive, but a muffler delete or a less restrictive muffler will give you a great sound without breaking the bank.
- High-Flow Cats or Test Pipes: If you want more power, upgrading the catalytic converters to "high-flow cats" or "test pipes" will improve exhaust flow. Test pipes are generally not street-legal and will cause a check engine light, but they are a very cheap way to increase power. High-flow cats are a good compromise.
- Suspension: The stock suspension on a G35 is getting old. A set of lowering springs or coilovers can dramatically improve the handling and stance of the car. You can find good quality used coilovers from a reputable brand for a reasonable price, and they will give you a huge improvement in handling and looks.
- Brakes: Don't underestimate the value of good brakes. Upgrading to a good set of brake pads and rotors will make a huge difference in the car's stopping power and safety. You can find good quality aftermarket pads and rotors for a good price.
As you mentioned, the G35 is a very well-known platform, so you can find a huge amount of information and support from this community. The best advice is to take your time, do your research, and enjoy the process.
