I have a 2001 i30t with about 115,000 miles. I've had some major issues the last 6 months or so. At times the car won't start, when it does start I can only make it a few miles. If it does start and I am driving, the car will completely shut down, all internal lights will start blinking and all gauges will go to zero, at this time I know I have about 30 seconds before the car shuts down completely, this has happened on the highway going 65 and in the parking lot going 5 mph and many other times. I've had multiple mechanics look at the car and everyone either says battery or alternator. I have replaced both and the problem continues. I've brought it in 6 times now trying quite a few different things and have paid quite a bit of money for no results. Now I'm told it could be a chip in the ecm that controls the voltage regulator. The service department at an infiniti dealership says that just the chip can't be replaced, but that the entire ecm needs to be replaced and ballpark is $600 to $1200 not including diagnostic charge or labor. Also, I told the service department at the dealership that the car wont even start unless I put a slow charge on it, his reply was that it can't be an electrical problem then if it sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't. Sorry for the long post but I would very much appreciate any information.
