QX56/80 anyone know how to check the transmission fluid? Transmission vibrating not running normal and wanted to check the fluid (Color/Level). Need a machine? If so, any other place other than dealer have it? Aamco etc.

I would take to the dealer...unless you can find a shop with a machine dedicated for S Matic fluid you will risk cross contamination. You can't tell anything by color and the temperature of the transmission has to be just right to make sure the fluid level is just right.

Kinda of sounds like you might have a torque converter failing.

What model year is your vehicle and what is the mileage?

Do you have the check A/T light on?

No check engine light. No check transmission light.. 2011 with 75k on it. Had it flushed at dealer at 55k. I just called the dealer and they told me they can't check the level in it. Just wondering if anyone had any clues. It isn't jerking bad but thought before it did I would get it checked out. I dont' even know what to call it. Wife says feels like running under rumble strips. Feels like it is in to high of a gear. Don't want to spend money on whatever they say and not fix it.

4WD might be activated... place it in AUTO

Dealer is lying to you...now they might not want to do it for free because it takes time...they have to get it to the right temp and there is a plug they remove to check the level by seeing if any fluid drips out...that's how they can tell

That is what I figured. I figured drain plug and another plug top to fill it up. Just want to make sure it at right level. Told me it needed to reflashed or maybe another drain refill etc. Anyone have a picture of the bolt?

Did u check the 4WD dial... it's probably stuck in the HIGH or LOW instead of AUTO. Mine somehow moved into that position a few weeks ago, and it was making that type of grinding noise and felt it was not in proper gear.

Yes, the 4wd is in auto.

It was a bad torque converter

Replacing transmission fluid

Has anyone replaced the Transmission fluid on your QX56?

I plan to get all of the fluids from Inifiniti but wanted to know if there are any gotchas to be aware of or guidance points that you would suggest.

Thanks,

nate

Changed at dealer. You will probably need a pump to pump the fluid back in the transmission.

From my research on this subject, I was convinced that Nissan does not formulate their own oil products and that Nissan simply uses a oil that meets their specifications. My findings follow -

Nissan-matic j fluid is a semi-synthetic JASO 1A spec ATF actually made by Castrol and sold to Nissan relabeled and sold for 3-4 times the cost.

Castrol Transmax J, which Castro made to work in all JASO 1A spec Japanese, is available at most auto-parts stores.

I followed the Infiniti shop manual instructions for changing the transmission fluid in my 2007 QX56. Eight quarts and thirty minutes later I was satisfied that the fluid had been freshened up to Infiniti's specifications.

10k miles later the transmission shifts in a climate ranging from 0 to 100 degrees like the day I bought it.
