My 2011 QX56 often gives a hard jolt and makes a bit of noise when I go from Park to Drive. Is this normal for these cars? Anyone else experiencing this and wondering if it's normal or perhaps something is wrong with the transmission?

if you are on a hill or otherwise are sitting resting on the trans when its parked, you will hear this clunk.

a good rule of thumb is set the park brake THEN put it in park.

Now I am not here to insult you and you may already know this.. just wanted to get us on the same page.

if you are on flat land, however, and are experiencing this, its not normal and you should take it in.

So my "thunk" happens regardless of a hill or if the car is on a flat area but it doesn't happen all the time.

I finally called the service dept. to schedule an appointment to have the car looked at and when I told him what was going on, he basically told me that because the cars are so heavy that it's a pretty common thing. He says when other 2011+ QX56s are brought in he notices the same thing and it's nothing to get alarmed over.

So I'm simply updating the thread, I'm not going to do anything about this (for now) and was wondering if anyone else with a 2011+ QX56 have noticed this also?

Yes I have the exact same issue. Not going to worry about it while under warranty.

thank you for the update to this thread. i will pay more attention to see if this happens. i can not recall it happening to me and i've a 12 with the 22s. 99% of parking for me is on flat/level surfaces.

this car is close to 6K pounds so any small lean on the trans gears could possibly cause it to clunk a little bit, but yes lets all keep this thread posted/updated.

thanks again....

never felt this on my 2011...

if it is happening all the time the service guy is full of crap that it is common... I'd take it an and have him show u another one that is doing it... bull$hit on his assertion that this is normal

My 12 does the same. Keep you posted if I feel the need to take it in

My QX56 does this, and my G37 Vert does the same thing...

I have tried setting the parking break, taking my foot off the break and then shifting to park. That seems to keep it from happening. Somehow the parking break is not precise enough to hold the car and when you set it with your foot still on the brake pedal, the car still moves just a bit afterward. I am familiar with this happening but usually cars that do this roll a bit and you can feel it move and rest on the transmission. This car doesn't seem to move at all but still somehow moves enough to rest on the transmission. Odd...

I think it's so crazy how loud it can be coming out of park to reverse or drive when parked at an incline. Sometimes when I forget to set parking brake the sound is frightening, how is this not damaging? My Audi a8l never has a sound coming out of park even at an incline/decline.

I always set my parking brake regardless of whether I'm on flat or slope...just a habit...I don't like the feeling of that jolt when the parking prowl is under a load...

I have an '05 and does the same thing...it's a bit intermittent, so assume it's the p brake timing thing...meaning, sometimes it's set before or after...but great to know it's 'common' and not a tranny going bad.
