I am a new QX owner and see that "premium" gas is recommended for the truck. Are most of u using 91-93 octane or going with the mid grade of 89 octane?

Nissan recommends 91 octane MINIMUM. using anything less will reduce engine output and could cause some other harm (excessive knocking, increased emissions, premature engine wear, etc).

I have tried 89 and 87 and for both I saw a reduction in MPG, so we have switched back to 91 (or 93 if 91 is not avail).

I wish 93 was avail in SOCAL. sadly only 91. there is a 76 that has 100 octane @ 9.99 a gal. That stuff is amazing in the Q. 190.00 to fill up but my gosh its great...

93 only for me. I can't figure out why guys try to go with anything lower. To save 20 cents a gallon on an average 20 gallon fill up is $4. I have to laugh when guys gasp at me reaching for the 93.

agree. you spend all of this money on this expensive car but then go cheap on petrol. makes no sense to me.

I sooooooooooooo wish 93 was here in LA...

I totally agree on the higher octane, but the only reason I posted this question is that some service advisors at the infiniti dealership are saying it really doesn't matter if you use the mid grade. Here mid grade is 89, but I always put 93 in as it is only 0.10 cents more.

I know it's frustrating. Always seems like every shop has a cowboy in it that knows just a little more than everyone else and wants to make sure everyone else is aware of it. Much like the nurse who is smarter than the physician. Lol.
To be honest I have no idea how my qx would perform on anything less than 93 because that is all I have ever put in it and I only have a little over 16k on it. I also am uncertain the differences if any between 91 and 93. Both are considered premium fuels and most gas stations pump from two storage tanks. They have the 87 and either the 91 or 93. The mid grade is the blend of the two mixed at the pump drawn from the two tanks. It makes sense if you think about it and is more cost effective for the gas stations having one less storage tank to contain.

Yea, my position on this is for the money you spend on the QX, why 'test' to see if it will run on lesser quality gas to save yourself $4 a fill-up, really? really?

Total preference thing. The thinking behind using higher octane fuel is to prevent engine knocking which is the premature ignition of the compressed fuel-air in one of the engine cylinders. If you use lower octane fuel and your engine knocks upgrade to a higher octane fuel or buy octane booster at an auto parts store to correct the problem. For those that can only access 91 or lower octane fuel you can add octane additive to your gas tank to boost your octane rating. However, if your engine doesn’t knock I'm not sure if any of this is absolutely necessary.

I actually use 87 in my '11, mainly because that's just what I'm used to buying. However, after reading this, I'm thinking of trying the 93 for a few tanks and see if I can tell a difference.

Yeah, I'm going to try higher octane too to see if my MPG increases. If the MPG increases the extra cost of gas will pay for itself. Not that $4 extra per tank would kill anybody but would be nice to know if it offsets the cost.

folks, the minimum for this car is 91! octane booster is not recommended for this engine either. the engine is controlled by a computer and it has different program "maps" to tune the engine to the type of petrol used. in warmer/hotter climates you better use higher octane or you will for sure get knock which can harm a lot of components and cause premature engine wear.

stick to using a good branded petrol (Chevron then shell or if you want a discounted petrol, quicktrip) of 91+ and you should be good to go.

i wish you cats could find some 100 octane. I mean, i just lightly press the pedal and the Q will move like a raped ape. smooth idle, sweet exhaust smell. really good stuff.

bite your head off bro... ;)

I need to find that 100 octane station. Ever since moving to SoCal this 91 octane is making my QX knock at low rpms.

i had the knock a time or two when starting up on hot days. that initial knock made me cringe.

yes i moved here a year ago and i miss 93 (and 94).

the place i go to is at barrington and pico. it says "racing fuel" on the marquis.

your car will LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE the 100 octane! 9.99 a gallon. mix it up with 91 to get a higher 95...

Is there 100 octane the same as avgas we us on light piston aircraft? Our local FBO charges around $6 a gallon so I would assume they are different types of fuel...
