Oh no, here we go again. After having both cats, the timing chain repaired and needing the DVD player fixed, paint has started flaking, yes flaking, on the roof.

It looks like paint flaking off old wood where it comes off in fairly large pieces. This is definitely not from road debris, etc. It is just above the windshield and in the grooves on the roof.

I have read this is somewhat common for white QX56s, but I find this completely unacceptable for a 6 year old luxury vehicle.

Before I call Infiniti, has anyone else experienced this or have recommendations on how to approach the subject with the dealer?

Thanks.

funny you are the first person i have ever see to have this issue happen, and i frequent 3 top nissan/infiniti forums on the web. ive been following the new qx since 2009 when it was just a rumor/design concept that was based off the patrol.

not saying it does not happen but its not something common ive seen people who POST on the forums I frequent.

Well, you say you read this is common for a particular color of qx, yet you come here asking if anyone has experience with it. Why not just go direct to those customers who have stated it happened to them and what they did to remedy it?

i will say that early in the new qx's run (the 2011), i have read from those new owners back in 2011 that the paint on the q was easy to scratch and that one should be careful when cleaning the car so as not to rub the paint using dirty rags, etc.

the car has a warranty on the paint and undercoating, etc, so look in your manual to find out when that expires.

if you purchased this car used, then you are probably not going to get any relief because you cant prove how the previous owner took care of the cars exterior.

maybe miss soccer mom, not knowing any better, used dishwashing liquid to wash the car with?

maybe the car sat next to some acid factory...

lots of reasons that could cause the paint to flake off.

Thanks for the response- I say common because a brief search results in several postings with owners with the identical issue in the identical location. I wanted to start here because I have had good luck with THIS forum and mostly like the overall attitude here. I have not contacted other people on other forums yet as I am not signed up yet.

Just looking for some friendly help....

PREPARE TO BE SHOCKED: This is a legitimate concern- here are many, many other people experiencing the same issue, complete with pics:

good find.

however i did a cursory search there and it looks like early 2011 first run models. could be a legit issue, although 5-10 people out of thousands who have these cars is not even a blip on the radar screen.

but the car is out of warranty, and its not a defect that would cause someone to have a traffic accident or some serious issue, so this may not go anywhere.

one lady was quoted 10K for a paint job?

from where the paint is flaking on those cars, look like they all went through the auto car wash with the abrasive bristles that spin and rub across the hood and top. i see that kind of paint flaking on other cars that go through those car washes.

No flaking paint problems here, but we considered painting our whole QX after it was sideswiped. We thought the new dark blue color would be nice...until they quoted us $9200 for the job. Silver is nice too 😀

High end car paint ain't cheap.

The dealer likely subs the job, find that guy.

That is a lot of peeling paint. I like white.

the paint job on the infiniti ain't that high end. if so it would not have the issues that some people are experiencing.

paint shops just charge for the brand. nothing special about the paint job.

guarantee here in LA you can get oem or better for less. ;-)

Yes it is flaking right in the rain channels that run length ways down the top of the SUV. Unfortunately on mine it isn't small either it is about 24" or more on each side and I now have a small spot on the deck lid where the glass meets the weather strip on that small lip. I've never had a cars pain job flake like this.
Very disappointing to say the least.

Same flaking paint problem

Have a white 2011 with the same flaking paint problem. Just noticed the problem recently, the paint is bubbled and flaking in two spots on the rear hatch just below the rear window...seems like a defect but I'm sure this is well past any warranty

my white 08 has flaking front bumper, quote im getting are 250 to 550

Once again this issue affects the 2011 - early 2012 QAA QX56. It is a binding issue on the aluminum panels...the hood, roof, and rear tailgate. I just had all three of those panels painted...paid for in full by Infiniti well out of warranty. It can be very expensive especially if done right. Several parts on the roof have to be replaced unless they are glued back on by the body shop.

Who did you contact to make them take ownership and pay for the respray? When I asked my service manager he acted like he didn't know anything. Said to contact corporate.

We had the same issue on a 2011 Moon White Pearl QX-56...we contacted Consumer Affairs (1.800.662.6200) and a few weeks later we have a loaner QX-60 while the QX-56 is being repainted. They said it would take about a week to complete so we should hear something this afternoon or tomorrow. Once we called they gave us a case # and we had to stop by the nearest dealership, an hour away, give them the case # at the body shop and they took some pictures. We followed up with consumer affairs a few days later and they told us it was approved and what date we should drop it off.
