Catalytic Converter Question

I own a 1999 I30 with the California engine, although the car was purchased and is registered in NJ. I need a new front Cat, and I have been told I must buy a CA legal replacement or the car will not function properly. Is this true?

It's not that the car won't function properly if you buy a generic cat, but you probably won't pass emissions required by the state of California.

A somewhat related question - are Infiniti engines the same in all 50 states or are there California cars and 49 state cars?

Check the emissions label under your hood. It will indicate if it is a California vehicle or a 50 state.
