My QX is coming up to 48k service and I just called to make an appointment for July. They quoted me $1500.00 for this service. I realize this is a big one, but seriously $1500 was quite unexpected.

I told them I was just going to do the oil and filter. I would also like to change the cabin filter myself. Do I risk anything by doing this? If I do not change out the front and rear diff fluids as well as the transfer case could I get myself into trouble?

Also, does anyone have any places that sell the OEM ones (ACCS) grape polyphenol filters? I am not sure what my dealer sells them for, but if they charge 1500 for the service I can only imagine what they charge for the filter.

there is a thread on this a few pages back, so do a quick search for "cabin filter" and you should see the discussion.

the cabin filter is a 100 dollar job but you can replace it in under 10 minutes. there are a couple places that sell the filter for like 35 dollars (USD).

the air filter you can do yourself.

If all goes according to plan, this QX will be one of our retirement vehicles. With that in mind, we opted to buy the maintenance plan when we bought the QX. Pays for everything except brakes and tires.

Kind of nice to just drive in and drive out and not pay anything.

I think they did mine for $800 and change.... I think that's insane!!! Most of the work is a visual inspection... and they wonder why we call them $tealers

I did read the thread on cabin filter. Some info says there is an airbag sensor to move (or disconnect) others do not mention it. Does that have to be moved or disconnected? I would imagine if you do, that the battery should be disconnected as well?

Also, no one really answered the question if I would be asking for trouble should I not choose to follow the dealers maintenance items. I do know that the dealers items often differ (sometimes immensely) from what the manufacturer suggests.

I believe $1500 is ridiculous for maintenance. Is it really that fragile of a vehicle that we need to fully change out both differential fluids and the transfer case only after 30,000 miles among other things. I am all for preventative maintenance but I think this goes a bit too far. Am I out to lunch here?

Does anyone have a MANUFACTURER scheduled maintenance list by mileage and/or time? Not the one the dealer "suggests" but the one that is usually in the back of the owners manual. I did check through the manual, and unless I missed it I didn't see a schedule for maintenance.

i didnt disable the airbag when changing out the cabin filter. its not needed. its in the notes probably for liability reasons.

i thought i saw a manufactuer schedule on the infiniti website?

cant say one way or the other about the fluids but i dont believe that changing them at 30K is a bit dramatic... i think someone here suggested their dealer wanted to change the brake fluid at 15K... ;)

So if you have reached 30,000 miles with your QX, did you change all the fluids?

The pdf that found detailing out the scheduled maintenance shows that #1 and #2 services does not include diff oil, drive belts, tranny fluid and transfer case oil. It only stipulates changing the brake fluid and engine oil.

In the OPTIONAL premium upgrade, they suggest changing all those items above. However in models with the 7 speed auto, this will decline changing the tranny fluid.

Maybe I've answered my own question, I suppose. Checking the Infiniti Canadian website, I can only see the owners manual as a download. But I do have a copy of the service manual from infinitiforum.net.

Interesting that in 15,000 miles (at 45,000 miles) the manual suggests changing the brake fluid again!

EDIT: I found the service schedule on the Canadian website. It does not list any transfer case or automatic transmission fluid changes. It does list changing the brake fluid. Interesting.

There was an instance a few years ago where a Chrysler minivan had a brake failure that was traced to the brake fluid. Ever since then they have added it to the maintenance schedule to cover their butts.

I wonder what the Maintenance schedule would be like if maintenance was INCLUDED in our trucks!!! Probably like BMW, oil change every 15000, not 3000. Tire rotation every 10,000 not 5000, etc....

Mine is every 3 months unless the mileage comes up first, which it never does.

Silver... I meant if the service was included on a global basis on every QX and others, not service that is part of an extended service plan you might purchase or those offered by select dealers. BMW for example includes service on all their cars, thus to save money they say oil changes every 7500-10k or 15k, depending on the car... not 3k on any of their vehicles.

Just an update to this thread.

I had my QX in for this "service" this past Saturday. I did not opt for what the dealer was peddling, I just went with oil change and 99 point inspection. Still ran me almost $100.00. They also had to fix up my 3M that had started to peel on the passenger fender flare as well as change out the front camera / emblem as the black paint was peeling off of it. Of course, they neglected to tell me that the camera / emblem that arrived was damaged and could not be used and had to order another!

I had the intention of picking up the cabin carbon micro filter and the air filter myself, which I got for $100 (both) and got to talking with the parts manager. I told him that I thought the quoted price of $1500 for this service was too much especially since the owners manual does not even require changes to most of the fluids they were going to do at this time. He agreed and even went so far as to say that he wouldn't do this large service until 96,000kms. Interesting...

Stealers aren't making a whole lot of money on their new car sales... the big bucks comes from the service department.

I look at it this way.

If every person that bought a car and got the last possible dollar out of the dealership, and they made no money in parts and service, they would close their doors and then we would have no one to go buy our cars from.

I don't mind that they make a few dollars off of me. It's how they stay in business. However I don't want everyone working there getting a trip to Italy off of me.

Precisely my point. I do expect dealers or any business for that matter to make some profit, otherwise...what's the point? However, do not gouge me to the point that I become lobotomized. I may have been born at night....just not last night.

That old saying is always right, if it's too good to be true, it likely is. Also, there is the one that says if your gut is telling you are getting hosed, you likely are...
