2011 QX56 Cabin Filter Change

Just replaced the cabin filter using the above instructions.
All I did was this and it worked out fine:

"4) Remove the plastic cover from beneath the glove box compartment that faces the floor. Their is a small light that will likely pop off but easily goes back in place when assembling again.
5) Notice their are three star screws at the top and bottom of the box opening. Unscrew all of them. Once unscrewed, pull the entire box off the dash- this will take a slight use of force and it will pop out. This goes back in place easily as well.
6) remove the black rectangular cover to the filter compartment and remove the air filter.
7) Replace Filter and Replace the door.
8) Attach the light back in place before placing the glove box casing back on the dash. The casing will pop back in place and you can align the right side first and then the center before re-engaing. You will hear a click when it is in place and it will hold. 9) Replace the 6 star screws"

Getting the glove box itself off seemed like a bigger pain than just removing the 6 screws and giving the whole thing a yank.
This time it took 20 minutes and next time it will be only 10.

Does the air flow from top to bottom or bottom to top? The filter indicates which way it's supposed to sit in the slot based on the air flow but I don't recall how the older filter was situated and I've taken it out already.

Also, is the foam gasket essential or can I just put my own on or leave it off entirely?

OK. I became impatient and put a new filter back in. Here's what I think or at least how I did it.

I applied my own foam gasket using foam tape. It should be fine. It's just as snag, maybe even more than the old one and it's the exact same dimensions.

Air flow goes top to bottom (or at least I'm pretty sure it does).

Just wondering...and maybe I'm crazy...but why doesn't the rear A/C have a filter? I bet it's a pain in the ass to clean the rear evaporator coil. I try to keep the rear clean but I know it's probably dirty

air comes into the cowl from outside and is sucked in from top to bottom.
