Here is my goal.....a USB powered hard drive with my entire movie collection on it always kept in the car and plugged in the USB port.

I'm having trouble finding information on what file type and encoding the car likes best. So far, I can't get any video to play, but no problems with audio in .mp3. The car's manual is all I can find so far and it is practically useless. It says only this: USB video supports .divx and mp4 (.afs and .asf). From my understanding, .mp4 and .asf are both containers, and the way the manual is written, it appears that .asf is a codec...also, not sure what the hell a .afs is...probably a typo in the manual? Hope I'm not getting to technical on video formats here. No mention of H.264 in an mp4 which really makes me angry.

So, before I dive into figuring all this out by encoding a short video clip in numerous formats, I though I would see if ANYONE has had success in playing a video from the USB port.

Thank you and have a GREAT day...

Mike

did you ever find an answer?

I have the same issue and haven't been able to find any answers. Would love to know if you figured it out.

Thanks!

I've been able to playback media files that I've converted and loaded onto a USB key. The original files were in various formats (mostly .mkv). I used a program called Emicsoft MTS Converter to convert the video. The software is much more versatile than the name suggests -- it pretty much converts any input video into any output format that you could want. The only problem is that there are a multitude of output formats to choose from.

After much experimenting, the only way I could get my QX56 to read and play any of my files was to use the "DivX Video (*.avi)" output setting.

I am using the "Emicsoft Total Media Converter" software with the DivX Video (avi) and it works fine.

The only problem I have so far is how to format a external USB drive with a capacity greater than 32GB. It has to be FAT32 and I tried many different software to format it, QX56 won't recognize the drive.

Can't you just purchase an external drive that is FAT32 Format already?

I've been converting my DVD's to General Video Format .vob files but the car won't let me skip tracks with out going into settings. Sucks

I'm looking for module to bypass video play back & answering phone while driving.

this site has it for 2009 and older cars and is $99
http://www.kptechnologies.com/products.php#/6

www.prestigeoussociety.com has it for $300 - way to much for a little module.

SO DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND A MODULE FOR A REASONABLE PRICE? THANK SO MUCH
