I'm wondering if anyone has had a situation where they have needed to start/move their car a couple of times without fully warming the engine - and then when going to start the car the next day the engine sounds flat when cranking - a few pops here and there as it seems like a single cylinder is firing - then after lengthy cranking engine eventually starts - huge cloud of black smoke results - lots of fuel apparently. I don't normally do this as I typically drive 15 to 20 miles whenver it is started - but should I really have to avoid doing this? Only way to get the engine to clear the fuel was to completely floor the accellorator and crank away for 10-15 secs.

My G has 67,000 miles running on fresh premium fuel - no other drivability issues or abnormal performance once it is going. Still on original spark plugs. Funny thing is I had this happen with a 96 Maxima I used to have - dealer replaced an O2 sensor on some type of program recall, but wasn't really blaming this issue on the sensor - changed it with no noticeable difference - happened again once before I traded on my G in 2005.

Any ideas on what could cause this - the engine really sounds different when this happens - almost like it doesn't have any compression (flat sound) - I first thought my starter wasn't engaging, but having someone watch the engine while I cranked it - it definately was turning over and occasionally firing. Once it started and cleared it was fine - no warning lights on dash.

Thanks!

Very odd. Black smoke like that on start up seems to be incomplete combustion of the fuel.

wonder if someone else can chime in.
