I am in need of help with struts. I have a 1991 Q45 and need to replace the rear struts. I was told by the dealer that you can use the came coil and mounts and just replace the shock BUT those are discontinued as well. Does anyone know if a shock or strut from a different vehicle could be used as a replacement?
Thanks

This is a common problem for owners of the first-generation Q45 (G50 chassis), especially the 1991 model. The dealer is correct that the original parts are discontinued, which leaves you in a tough spot. You're also correct that you can reuse the original coil and mounts and just replace the shock. This is often the most cost-effective solution for a car of this age.

Unfortunately, there is no direct, bolt-in shock or strut from a different vehicle that can be used as a replacement. The Q45's suspension is unique, and its components were not widely shared with other vehicles in a way that allows for a simple cross-reference.

However, you still have a couple of options:

Aftermarket Shocks: While the OEM shocks are discontinued, some aftermarket companies still produce a direct-fit replacement.1 You will need to look for brands like KYB or Bilstein that specialize in suspension components. You can find these on websites like RockAuto, Summit Racing, and others that sell parts for older, less common vehicles. Make sure you are looking for parts specifically for the 1990-1996 Infiniti Q45.

Coilover Conversion: This is a more involved and expensive solution, but it's a very popular option for Q45 owners. You can replace the entire strut and coil assembly with an aftermarket "coilover" kit. These kits are often adjustable in both height and damping, so you can customize the ride to your liking.2 Brands like BC Racing and Godspeed make kits for the Q45.3 This option will be more expensive than just replacing the shocks, but it will give you a modern, performance-oriented suspension and ensure you won't have this problem again in the future.

Since your dealer's solution is no longer viable, your best bet is to look for a complete aftermarket shock that is specifically designed for your car or to consider a full coilover kit if you are looking to upgrade.
