Check engine light came on.. Catalytic converter

Taking it to infiniti next week, we'll see what they say. they joked they "wouldn't hurt me".

I cleared the code by accident, hopefully that doesn't matter.

code will come back if there is an issue.

fyi codes sometimes happen all the time but the car will not alert you to one unless its a repeat offender, so seeing that you had a code popup means most likely you will see it again...

lesson learned...clear the code, dealer won't do anything. oops. hasn't come back yet though.

but luckily it got warm and i noticed that my A/C system failed this week so i had to bring it in anyway. i'm pretty sure they broke it when they replaced my engine but have no way to prove it. $1400. ugh.

Mine's in the local muffler shop as we speak. Just dropped it off this morning to have the Bank 2 CAT replaced. ~$1300. (Infiniti wanted $3,000!)

i have to say i am nearing the end of my rope with this thing.

...and i'm ignoring the issue where the rear suspension sags when it is below 40 degrees or so because the gaskets around the air tubes shrink up in the cold (ie the air pump needs to lift the rear end every time the car sits more than about 3-4 hours, and it will be low after a long drive as well). i might try to fix that this summer since the dealer is useless there. this has been a problem on these things since before 2011 when they remodeled the qx. i don't tow so its more of an annoyance.

If you do not mind me asking...

Where did you buy your bank 2 cat from? Did you buy OEM from Infiniti or did you buy the aftermarket one from ebay?

$1,300. Is that parts and labor? Or can you break that it down for me?

It was an aftermarket CAT. Shop purchased it from "Walker" (brand).

Don't have the receipt in front of me, but the CAT was like $500, the A/F sensor was another $220 or so, and then the rest was labor.

Do you know if it was direct fit or a weld in converter? I would like to know since I will eventually have to do the other bank.

I have tried to locate that cat online but cannot find it. If you happen to come across the info or find a link to that cat, can you share?

So far I know now of 2 companies making replacement cats for our QX.

(1) Diversified Environmental Catalysts
http://www.deccats.com/catalytic_search/index_other.php?cal=Federal

(2) Davico
http://davicomfg.com/catalogstate.aspx

But someone here said they had problems installing the Davico cat or that it was not a direct fit. Basically, they said they had to send it back and get OEM. So, would be great for us to know the alternatives to OEM that is a direct fit and works. Like you mentioned the one from "Walker" is a direct fit.

That is very helpful info. If you happen to find a link to it or a site selling it, please share if you can.

so what i am gathering from this and other posts is that --if you are out of warranty-- there isn't a reason to go to the dealer for cat replacement -- that you can have your local competent guy either weld in an aftermarket that almost fits directly, or a direct fit aftermarket if you can find it, or buy the OEM and have that put in. But in any case, no need for dealer labor...right?

Only reason to have it done at the dealer (that I can think of) is if you're hanging your hope on the fact that there could be a recall in the future. Those of us who didn't go to the dealer would be out of luck while those that had the work done at the dealer, presumably, would get a refund.

How did the cat replacement go?

So far so good. It cost me a little under $1300 for the Bank 2 CAT and the Bank 2 A/F Sensor. SES light hasn't come back on, and boy am I happy to not have that thing light up the second I turn it on anymore!

Only thing I haven't done yet (that was part of the proposed fix) is to have the ECM reset at the dealer, but I'm planning to have that done at my next oil change.

Can you help me out locate the part number of that bank 2 cat? Or if you can give me the phone number to the shop who did your job, I can call them to ask for the part number of that Walker cat you say they used on your car.

What Air/Fuel ratio sensor did you buy? Got a link or part number for it?

I have done some research and even have my mechanic call a supplier of cats here who supplies cats from all cat manufacturers. I asked for a Walker, but they say Walker does not make cats for our cars. I told them someone on my car forum got a Walker cat, but they said unfortunately they cannot locate a Walker cat, so they do not know if Walker makes one for our cars or not. So, I really wish to get to the bottom of this.

Do you by chance have a part number for the cats you used, so I can look it up on the internet? From your receipt or feel free to give me the number to the mechanic shop who did this for you, I can call them to get that information about the Walker cat. To get the part number.

I want to try to locate it and see it.

They had a tough time finding the CAT to fit it. Had to keep my truck an extra day b/c it took them 3 tries to find the right one.

No idea what A/F sensor they used.

Place is called Tire Town & Muffler. "David" did the work. Their number is 850-222-2224.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot for that info. Just like I thought. The catalytic converter that just got put on your car is not from Walker.

I just called and spoke to a lady. First she said I should bring my car in before they can tell me what kind of cat they will use. I said nope. Not needed to help tell me what part they will install on my car.

Then I asked to speak to David. He came to the phone and would not disclose anything, lol. He started by saying they use Walker. I said nope. That I have already gone with my mechanic who called a major supplier and I specifically asked my mechanic to request the cat made by Walker. So, Walker does not make a cat for our vehicle.

So, David says well he calls his supplier and his supplier gets him whatever catalytic converter they can find.

I said that is all good, but I care a lot to know what brand name is put on my car. He says he does not know the brand name only that it is a direct fit bolt on part like oem. And that he offers warranty with the install. So, he says if I want to know a brand name or the part number, he does not have such information to share with me.

I said that is fine. The only thing is I care a lot to know the brand name of the part that a mechanic plans to install on my vehicle. He said well, I cannot help you sir.

Then I just asked what brand sensor he uses? Same response.

I thanked him for his time.

Well, I have decided I will be buying oem for my bank 1 cat. I will not buy aftermarket cat. I will also buy new OEM gaskets, nuts and bolts. I just decided to spend the extra money. No need to gamble with the aftermarket cat. Cost difference not too bad. Peace of mind may be worth it here to spend that extra.

And just so you guys should know. My dealerships sells the oem cat for $1,067 plus tax.

Guess what? My mechanic called the same infiniti dealership and asked for a whole sale price from them. Infiniti is selling it to him for $675.XX plus tax. All I need to do is drive over there, pay for it and take it to my mechanic. Same for all the other parts that I want like gaskets, nuts and bolts. Replacing everything associated with the cat. My mechanic gets whole sale price from the dealership and he can send anybody to go pay and pick it up.

So anybody feel free to ask your mechanic if he can get this kind of price from the dealer. Would save you some money on the cost of the oem cat than you buying it yourself from the dealership.

.

I used these sensors off amazon. They are identical to the OE sensor since both are made by Bosch

Bosch 17006 Oxygen Sensor, OE Type Fitment https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EZQJA8I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_6l4dzb3T6C3EX

I recommend the OE Manifold / Cat and gaskets as well. I also highly recommend you replace the manifold nuts as well and coat them in anti-seize

Only thing I haven't done yet (that was part of the proposed fix) is to have the ECM reset at the dealer, but I'm planning to have that done at my next oil change.

Tell me more about this ECM reset, as in what is it just to clear the code or is it something more along the lines of a reprogram?

I am planning on buying bank two and replacing it with in the next few weeks, I love the "having the mechanic call" idea LoL

The ECM reprogram is one of the 3 items suggested for a CAT replacement

1. Replace the CAT
2. Replace the A/F Sensor
3. Reprogram the ECM (sorry if I used the wrong terminology earlier)
