hydraulic body motion control QX56 and towing

My QX56 without HBMC is better in corners than our 2008 Yukon was. It does lean, but there's "grip", where in the Yukon it would roll and have no grip on the stock 20's. it's all about the confidence you feel in the corners.

Thank you Begone for articulating what I have obviously not been able to in this thread.

I don't have the HBMC. I have the base model with 20" wheels.

I'm honestly not trying to be a jerk and certainly no disrespect. Your post just has me wondering if you possibly purchased a QX and have the HBMC but just didn't think you do. Everything you say sounds like you are driving a HBMC which would make sense. Either way, it's all good.

I didn't think you were being a jerk. I was just trying to make sure I was clear in letting you guys know I don't have the HBMC yet I experience a great deal of improvement. It's all good. Wait til you see my thread upcoming....

The short version of this is that the base QX platform is pretty good, and by the sound of it, better than the GM platform, and the HBMC only makes it better.

I have a 2011 without HBMC, and it handles terrible. It corners perfectly fine like you guys are saying, but when it hits an offset in the pavement, manhole cover, bridge transition, etc. the backend sways and almost skips to the side. I have no idea what to do about it. Dealer tells me it's a 'characteristic of the vehicle'!?

Does anyone know if this is just an issue with 2011's that was corrected in a newer year? 2011 was the start of the new body style change and I'm wondering if they didn't have the car figured out then. Also I wonder if someone HBMC was added if it would fix the issue.

Does not sound normal.

I would be checking shocks and other suspension components.

When we mentioned an issue with our 2010 front suspension they pulled it in and end up giving us a loaner for a week due to the entire strut assembly was broken.

If that was the answer I got from my dealer I would either be talking to the general manager or another dealership asap. Definitely something odd going on with your ride.
I drive in and around Detroit daily on some of the worst roads in the country. If there was any type of wandering affect like you describe I would have noticed it before I got more than 1/4 mile from the dealership because the road it's on is as bad as any.
My truck is a 3/4 ton HD diesel so you can imagine how much of a jolt it is to ride these roads in it comparably...

Well... long story... but the Dealer proceeded to say it was normal and told us to contact Infiniti consumer affairs. Meanwhile, I called another dealer who acted willing to listen. They said same thing.. it has to be in the rear suspension or air ride and it didn't sound normal. When I came back to the local dealer with that info, they were willing to look at it again. After they had it for a week, they put new shocks on the rear, put new rear links on (isn't this a 200x to 2010 recall and not a 2011 issue?), and then did a full alignment.
I'm happy that it now rides fine again and it wasn't 'normal' as I was told. I have no idea why they had to escalate the issue to Infiniti USA rather than to actually do a decent job looking at it. I ended up telling Infiniti consumer affairs that I felt this particular service department doesn't know much about the suspension of the QX56 (i'm guessing since there aren't many on the road in our area, they don't see many in their service department). In return, Infiniti consumer affairs gave me 2 years of oil changes and maintenance for free! That was at least nice.
I'd love the peace of mind of knowing this is the end of the suspension issues and that it isn't going to haunt me every 20k miles. Luckily, I'm still under warranty and will be for a while yet.

Just reading the issue I could tell it was not only abnormal but unsafe and it amazes me any dealer would let you walk out the door knowing the vehicle was doing that. Glad they fixed the issue.

My wifes 2011 which now has 96,000 miles on it has done this since new. I took it to the dealer (2.5 hr drive for me) two times for repair and was told there was no issue and that "It's basically a big truck, it's gonna ride a little rough sometimes." My wife has gotten used to it but it still scares the crap out of me. She put many (45K) miles a year on her vehicles so I'm about to trade it but I'm worried about this affecting resale value. Plus the check engine light is on and now has gas smell in/outside the vehicle at times. (Cracked exhaust manifold/catalytic converter?) All in all, not to impressed with Infiniti, love the car but had too many big issues to roll with another.

UPDATE:

I took my wifes QX56 on a 3 hrs trip back to Grubbs Infiniti - the dealer where the vehicle was 1st purchased to see if they could fix the suspension issue and address the cracked exhaust manifold. I just got off the phone with the service advisor and was told the suspension rides "rough" because the rear shocks were wore out and needed to be replaced. Plus, I "didn't buy the HBMC model so the base model suspension does tend to bounce some, it was normal. Icing on the cake...both cats need replacing and Infiniti's emissions warranty is only 8/80K so I'm looking at $4,700 to replace them.

I buy a lot of vehicles both for my work and self and can tell you this:

I WILL NEVER BUY NOR RECOMMEND ANOTHER NISSAN PRODUCT IN MY LIFE. I WILL WARN EVERYONE TO NEVER DEAL WITH GRUBBS INFINITI.
I WILL FILE A COMPLAINT WITH INFINITI USA. (for what good that'll do)

I hope ya'll have better luck with yours than I did with mine. Under NO circumstance would I ever carry one up to 100K miles. Buyer beware, mine's headed to the resale market as soon as I pick it up from the dealer.

Etex:

I live much closer to the dealership you mention. Just wanted to ask .. the 8/80k emissions warranty, was that the base warranty? My second question .. would an extended warranty have covered these items?

Sorry, just saw your post. The 8/80K is the the base warranty. I didn't purchase the extended warranty but was told it wouldn't have mattered anyway, the extended warranty EXCLUDES emmissions equipment. I guess they know they've got some issues. LOL

Now I'm trying to figure out why the heater has quit working. Cold air when it's 18 deg outside and the wife is quite upset.

Agreed, I just dug out my warranty and there it was, it reads EXCLUDES exhaust systems and/or catalytic converters.

My sympathies for those having to replace them prematurely.
