Tire pressure warning system--just another perk I like...

When using OEM size, regardless of the brand/model/type, I use OEM pressures unless I am trying to make minor adjustments to the handling of a car (not truck) while auto-crossing or at an open track day. In other words, in a performance environment, not normal driving on the street.

This seems off-topic, but since it has been brought up, the document titled "Load & Inflation Table Application Guide" on this Toyo page explains the method I use for determining tire pressure when using a tire size that is different from OEM.

To summarize the document mentioned above, here's my method:

  1. Lookup OEM tire size and pressure in the Inflation Table to determine load capacity at OEM size/pressure. Lets say this is 1200 lbs.
  2. Find new tire size in table
  3. Determine new tire pressure required to match OEM load capacity (1200 lbs) by finding the column closest to 1200 and looking at the pressure required to for that load capacity. Since the table jumps 3psi at a time, you can interpolate between given values to find your pressure.
My Subaru came with 215/45/17 tires with the recommended pressure being 35psi front, 33psi rear. I currently run 235/40/18 tires and arrived at 37/35psi (front/rear) on the new tires using the above method.

Obviously, you should never exceed a given tire's rated load capacity or inflation pressure.

If you find the center of your tires wearing out faster than both outside edges, you are probably running too much pressure in your typical use or too little pressure if you are wearing out the both outside edges before the center.

Man... I've pushed every darn button on that console except the big one labeled .... INFO.. !!!!

I told y'all I was getting blind... now add dumb to that list as well.... geeezzzzz!!!

Ok... pressures are now labeled/displayed. Funny thing is, my tire gauge and the QX gauge differ by about 2 PSI (QX list about 2 PSI LESS than gauge)... so which one is correct???

LOL i even told you in post #7 above!

press the info button and then "tire pressure". the screen shows each tire and its current pressure through the tpms...
:p

I go with the TPMS system everytime.

Tire Pressure

Is there a way to show the current tire pressures or do I just get the Check Tire Pressure light?

Sorry, my manual is at home and I'm working 48 hours straight.

Thanks, I guess I don't have that feature. I don't have the tech package.

I don't have the tech package either and I have the tire pressure info. Located under info screen.
Let me know if you have it. We have the base model with theater package only.

same as he said....Have used the feature twice when adding air to the tires

press enter for tire pressure

yeah, you should have it punisher. You highlight 'Tire Pressure'
press enter, your round center button.
The values will only show if you are rolling.
I Tried soft-cell 34-35 is squishy. I run 37 front 39 rear.
they generally tick up two pounds after running a while. Good solid feel

2012 with all options except Tech package. I hit the INFO button under the NAV screen and these are my choices. Been through them and the only tire stuff is to set the rotation schedule.

yes you have to crank the car and have the wheels rotate a bit before getting any data from the tpms's :D

OK, so explain this. The manual says to turn the car to the on position but not running to operate the tire inflation feature but unless you start the car and drive the car far enough to get the TPM to display the pressures there is no way to show the pressures. If it doesn't show the pressures how will the car know when to beep the horns at the proper time? I tried with the car on and off and couldn't get a single blink from the lights or a beep. Not a big deal since I'm used to checking the pressures manually my whole life just thought this might be a useful feature if I could figure it out.

punish,

sorry that you are having issues.

one must inflate the tires cold, so you dont need to do any road driving.

turn the car on:

pump air into the tire

the tpms will send the data to the screen

when you are getting close to the recommended psi, the horn honks

if the tires are low low and you are filling it up, watch the led blinkers as they will blink to let you know you are getting close.

so yes turn the car on but you dont have to drive it. i guarantee this works because i posted the video up top in this thread and my own experience....

Thanks, I did try it running with cold tires and got blinking or honking which I was waiting for. The pressure went in fine and showed on the screen when I drove it and the low pressure light went off. I'll try it again when the tires are low and its about -10.

Does anyone what model years this applies to? I don't see it in my 2006 manual but found it in the 2013 manual under "TPMS with Tire Inflation Indicator" (page 5-6).

there is a video in this thread that shows this feature in action.

it only applies to 2011+ qx models.

earlier models will show the psi on the nav screen however....
