I've noticed lately that more and more GDI engines are significantly louder upon start up.

I don't think that is what it is. 91 octane, I forget the brand. engine is smooth as butter and no ping in all other conditions. It is just that first cold start i hear one loud click sound. It may be completely normal, but I have never heard it on any other vehicle.

there is only 91 octane in cali. there are a few 100 octane petrol stations but that is 10 bucks a gallon (i have the photo to prove it. cost 160.00 to fill up the tank).
i hear this ping once or twice in the summer or when the car was on for a while and i may make a short stop. upon crack i hear that one PING! and thats it. i even state this in a prior thread.
its all possible you are not hearing what i hear but without hearing the sound i cant be certain. but i will tell you 91 octane will not guarantee you wont get ping.
if you have access to higher octane petrol i encourage you to try it. when i used 100 octane in the q, NEVER EVER did i hear any ping at all.
the engine in the car i drive is smooth a butter too. no issues at all. i am the biggest nissan fanboy on this message forum so i am by no means talking negative here.

I chalk it up to Direct Injection engines these days.
