I test drove a qx Thursday. We have an 08 tahoe that's loaded. Was shocked at the lack of an Autostart. The owner came over to bail out the salesman when it was apparent to them this could be a deal breaker. The owner said the reason it isn't offers is bc on all other vehicles with Autostart an additional fob is placed under the hood and the fobs communicate to each other and that is how they start. He said that setup would compromise the security system on the qx and that without the fob it wouldn't start.
Wish I was smart enough to know the truth here. I wouldn't mind the add on remote system and I would go with a compustar. Living in Michigan it's essential to have one bc of the cold, ice and snow. I've had trouble a few times with doors being frozen shut that would render the current setup on the qx useless.
Just a bit disillusioned with the onslaught of things they thought of but couldn't figure out the Autostart?
I would welcome any and all responses. As a matter of fact I would appreciate a phone call from someone who wouldn't mind answering a few questions.

Thanks,

Chris

I started this post and have not installed the remote start. I had 2 Denali's (08-10) before this Q and I can tell you that the Q is so much better than those GM SUV's that you wont care about paying extra for a remote start. It's a phenomenal vehicle.

I live in MN and need the remote start (except for this past winter). I installed a Viper deal that starts with an iphone app. no fob needed. It was about $600 plus annual service. only used in 5-6 times and seem to work as intended.

Thanks for the info goblue. If no fob is needed then how do you start the vehicle? I was under the impression the fob had to be inside the vehicle for it to unlock and start. Help me understand this. I'm still interested in this solution for the iPhone capability. Thanks!

They install some electronic override module in the vehicle, which is part of the alarm system. the ignition is killed when the door is opened.

The setup was about $600 and I think it's another $100/yr in service fees for the cellular connection. I came off a fob based system in my yukon and have mixed feelings. I like the range of the phone system, but miss the ability to hit a fob. I really wanted to avoid an extra fob on the key ring.

i probably will use the remote start less as it takes a few seconds to fire up the phone, but it is there when I need it. Also with the ability to unlock the vehicle via the push botton on the handle, the need for a fob-based system is diminished.

i need to get a remote start install i am in mn , most of the winter are pretty tuff anyone in mn that got one install and is working good with no issue ?

I am in MN and got mine installed at esunfoofs.com in Plymouth. Mach 1 which has several locations also does it. It's the viper iphone system. i work in edina if you want to check it out.

has it's pluses and minuses, which I've documented here. I had it installed in October but only used it about a dozen times last winter since it was so mild.

I have the Viper as well. It starts the vehicle via iPhone. When I enter the vehicle, and press the brake pedal, the fob takes over. Without the fob, pressing the brake pedal shuts off the vehicle.

remote start

does any one who can install the viper in michigan

How about putting your smartkey on the back of your phone? I saw this product at CES and it is called Intellacase. I think it is a really cool idea and there is a kickstarter project to raise money for it. As a driver of the QX56 I want one of these so I am trying to help them get the word out. Check it out here...http://kck.st/10jCcKj

Thanks to Kcrebel, I recently had a remote starter installed on my wife's 2012 QX. It was arranged and paid for by the dealer as part of our purchase. Installer came to the house and was done in 2 hours. This is what was installed...http://www.directed.com/
They were able to use the original fob. Click the lock button 3 times and the truck starts. Also does not require restart of the engine when getting into the car. Simply press the start button twice. Wife is extremely happy. You know what they say... Happy wife, happy life. :)

I'll have to call the installer to find out. Give me couple of days and I'll post the results.
