QX56 gas tank/fuel gauge

Yes, I have been experiencing the same on my 2012. I am tempted to run it to where the gage is showing empty and then siphon the rest to know. Why doesn't someone more mechanically inclined do that for us?..Please?

repair completed

I had the same problem with the gas gauge. brought the q to the dealership, a new fuel rail sensor was ordered. Returned several days later to have part installed. Received call later that day, and that she would have to stay at the dealership for an unknown period of time. Apparently the fuel gauge on the instrument cluster has to be replaced as well which means the entire instrument cluster and its odometer had to be replaced. The car could not be driven to affect the odometer, the part was ordered, I was put on a wait list and received the q back after a week. Now works great. Able to fill car to 22 GALLONS when empty read.

After getting the recall done on my 08 for the fuel system issue, my first fill up was for 24 gallons with 60 miles left on the DTE meter. The low fuel light had just turned on prior to filling up. Looks like mine is pretty close to being accurate.

recall fuel leak?

Hi Raven69dad: was your QX leaking fuel, the reason you had the recall done?
Sounds like it is pretty close to accurate
thanks

...I'm OK with DTE flashing at 60 Miles to go...but when DTE shows 10 miles remaining and I stop to fill up I should be able to put 25 gallons !!!, it is annoying for the amount of $ that we are paying for the QX's !!, and the range for this vehicle was advertised as being "greater than most SUV's this size"...well...unless you like driving without knowing how much gas you got left in the Mountains of CO. where gas stations are few and far between with 3 kids, 2 dogs, bags for 2 weeks and a prego wife.....the QX56 does not seem to be the greatest SUV on the road anymore.....C'MON NISSAN, throw us a recall and get this fixed would ya !?!?!?!?

does anyone have it working right?

Is it a problem on all.qx56's or can a lot of you folks fill up 26 gallons from empty?

Mine is a 2011 QX56 and the most I was able to fill up was 20-21 gallons. I have currently 6,640 miles on the odometer. It appears to be a widespread issue and Infiniti/Nissan is not acknowledging there is even a problem.

Really? Are all vehicles affected or only a few qx56? I am considering buying one but this seems to be a major annoyance. Any workarounds.

My gas gauge reads the same as the ones mentioned here. Although I have only had one fill since bringing it home my one time at the pump when the warning chime comes on was 19 gallons. Display is showing just over 14 mpg currently with around 550 miles on it so I'm hoping as the engine breaks in I can get closer to the 20 mpg on the highway. Time will tell...

you will not get 20 MPG out of this car, lest you drive 30 MPH and downhill. its not going to happen. ive 7300 miles on the clock and i drive like grandma (60-65 MPH) and get 14.5 MPG. this is with the stock 22's. i did remove the muffler and resonator so it breathes better.

OK...we have no one so far who has come forward and said they were able to fill 26 gallons from empty!!
What are your dealers saying when you take these in about this issue?

In North Texas (DFW) my dealership stated it was 'reserve' fuel! I laughed and said yeah 5-6 gallons of reserve fuel, which doesn't register on the fuel gauge??

Our 2010 Toyota Sequoia is the same way. It has a 26.4 gallon tank, but when the gas gauge (and DTE reading) shows empty, it will only take 22 gallons or so. If I push my luck and go well past the "0" miles to empty mar--maybe another 30 to 40 miles--I end up putting in 24 to 24.5 gallons.

I would doubt that Toyota and Nissan would have the same supplier or the same legal advice, but this certainly seems to be more than just a coincidence.

In any case, it is irritating to have to fill up even more often than I have to.

is DTE a standard option on a 2006? I am having a rough time finding this information. I have been through the manual with no help. I want to know before I bring it to a dealer......

mine was nearly empty with less than 10 miles per the 'readout' and I only got 20 gallons in it..

I'm pretty sure it is impossible to siphon these newer vehicles as the place anti-siphon valves. I know this because one day i wondered why im always filling up gas cans for my ATV and golf cart and Sea-Doo. Why not just pull a few gallons from the SUV. Feeling all proud of myself, I ordered a siphon from Amazon. NOPE....wasnt gonna happen. I wish I could get rid of it.

Maybe the definitive way to sort this out is to completely run the QX out of fuel ;). That way you know exactly how many gallons the capacity is.

Anyone wanna try it??

I did try it and the truck took 26 gallons. Problem was that I had to go the gas station and bring home 2 gallons in a gas can. I got to this point because the dealer comvinced my wife to use the Range mode in the info center to give her an accurate picture of how many miles she had until empty. The problem is that the range number is as accurate as the fuel guage and after taking several trips and having the range increase i started to ignore the range indicator and decided to wait for the low fuel indicator. By the time that came on and I started to believe it I was down to 4 miles of range left. The truck took the 2 gallons in the can and a little over 24 gallons at the pump (about a 3 mile drive). It's a shame that such a great vehicle has such a meaningful flaw, let's hope they are working on this, but based on the amount of time this has been an issue I would assume that we're on our own.

I can verify if it runs out of gas it will start back. You don't need to tow back to dealer. Ran out tonight lol. So that is a lie. Just for what its worth I got 13.1 on the dash computer (All city driving). 348 miles on the trip computer. 13.1x26=340.6. It does hold 26 gallons.

The dealer called and said I have a good news and bad news.
The good news - you are not alone, there are others who are complaining about this problem and a bad news that this is how the car works and whoever he talked to (engineer) said that they cannot fixed it unless control software running the gauge is rewritten. For now (and I predict a recall for this issue soon) we would have to drive the car with 6-7 gallons of gas just being there as an extra carryon. One thing he mentioned which also made me nervous- is that if this car runs out of gas it would have to be towed to a dealler to be started again and that may be the reason for extra gallons to prevent it from ever happenning.
