As I approach 100k, I'm noticing on cold start ups a quite obvious amount of noise that sounds like the valve lifters clattering around. Anyone else experience this with the QX? Oil levels and all that seem good.

it's an 11 but I already had that done. Going to try a flush and valve adjustment, if needed, i guess.

not valves...my mechanic didn't want to mess with it and dealer thinks it is a bad wrist pin. that's no good and requires tearing the engine down...99,350 miles out of a 100,000 mile warranty...whew!

Had the same noise 86k miles, cold starts loud valve train clatter. I had been using fuel from Wal-Mart and Race Track, regular unleaded, and switched to Shell and added a bottle of Liqui Molly fuel treatment to a half full tank. Took me some time to settle on Liqui Molly, almost bought the BG fuel treatment, but the clatter has gone away. I use only name brand fuels Exxon, Shelll now but still regular unleaded. I thought the clatter might have been caused by poor fuel. Now have 88K miles, and did a road trip from Dallas to Tampa and never heard the clatter. Fingers crossed that it was a fuel issue.

they think it is a bad wrist pin. they are tearing the entire engine down and said i may need a new engine depending on the damage inside. 700 miles left on the warranty, whew!

fwiw i have used bg44k a few times, not for this reason...also in my g35.

dealer is currently fighting with warranty company about engine replacement. it's not the wrist pin and they don't know what it is. warranty co wants to have cylinder heads replaced, dealer says that won't work and wants to replace engine. Infiniti corporate involved, etc. The car has been there since the week before christmas.

Is this noise the same as kind of a quiet diesel sound - or is that the sound from the direct injection?

Was the noise you heard consistent, or just for a few seconds and that's it?

first the good news -- yesterday dealer told me the warranty company finally agreed to pay for a new engine. yay!

to your question -- it wasn't like a dieseling sound so much and it was much louder. It sounded like when i had bad lifters on an old car and they all had to get replaced. For the QX, it would come on cold starts (say below 40 degrees and car had been sitting awhile), and last for 1-5 minutes, varying with the engine speed. It seemed to be progressing quickly over the 2 or so weeks i had the noise, but the car drove fine (other than the intermittent stuttering the car has always had that no one has been able to fix...hopefully the new engine fixes that...i also wonder if that is what caused this problem in the first place).

The DI does make a sound that you could say is a dieseling sort of sound, yeah. But it is quieter than what i had.

Funny part is they still don't actually know what the problem is. They just know it is bad/eventually fatal.

Can you take a video of the noise for our information? No confirmation on wrist pin? Mine ticks on the left side when cold until warm, is that similar to what you are hearing?

too late...car has been in the shop since Dec 23 so i can't record anything, sorry. i couldn't really place the sound on a side. mechanics said the sound came from the lower part of the engine. but generally yes it ticked when cold to warm. i'd get it checked out!

and yes -- wrist pin isn't the issue. they don't know what it is (i suspect it is too much work to take it all apart when they know its going to need to be replaced anyway).

the qx60 loaner is nice but i'd like my big car back with its snow tires, etc.

well i finally got it back today. seems to run great so far. in the pile of papers i had for a minute before they took them away, i think the total cost (covered by warranty) was 17-20k. ouch.

engine was replaced.

i also should note that this engine replacement was done on the car with no requirement for proof of oil changes, etc. i maintain the car well, but i did buy it used (without records) and probably lost half of my oil change receipts. They did say that the engine didn't look like it was abused, but i was expecting the warranty co to look for every way out.

Anyway, maybe that fact will be useful to someone some day.
