I’ve learned so much from forums and don’t contribute.. couldn’t find good info on this today but figured it out and want to finally give back for anyone else searching it in the future.
My backup cam failed on my 2005 qx56 and I didn’t accept I had to buy factory and couldn’t just wire in aftermarket.
So I got a $30 cam on Amazon, specifically a little box shaped one hoping it would fit in the factory spot, it fit perfect.
Ok here’s what I did and it works great,
- Remove the panel on back hatch,
Remove the inside handle with a 10mm socket then it’s just held on with the typical clips.
You have to open the glass hatch to fully remove the panel once loose.
At that point you can see the back of the camera, to remove it you just need to take out the two small silver screw on the back of the camera, not the larger star bit screws, and unplug the harness.
Once removed, cut the wiring harness off the existing cam, your gonna connect it to your new cam. This isn’t necessary but this way u don’t have to cut your vehicles wiring.
The factory harness is 6v and aftermarket cams are 12v, so you have to pull power from the reverse lights, which in this case are extremely conveniently located right next to the camera.
Ok damn it’s 2022 and I can’t just insert pictures?.. I had pictures but I’m not taking the time to make a flicker account or whatever to post links..
Ok straight to the point, your camera will come with a red plug and a yellow one, the red wire on the red plug is your power, wire it to the reverse light, connect the black wire to ground.
Now take the yellow plug wire and cut off the plug.. strip the insulation and there’s two wires inside, a yellow one and a black one.
Now take the wiring harness from the existing camera you cut off, connect the yellow wire from ur new camera to the yellow on the old Harness.
Connect the black wire from ur new cam and connect it to the white wire on the old harness.
Don’t worry about the other two wires u don’t use them.
Now ur ready to go, plug the old harness which is now connected to your new cam back into the truck, and connect your power wire you wired to the reverse lights. Bingo it works. Figure out how to install whatever cam u bought.
Mine worked out really slick but I can’t post a photo so guess you’ll have to figure that part out yourself.
Also since I have the panel off I’m replacing the reverse lights with bright white leds, they’re size 921.
Hope that made sense.
